I used to use Nikon 35mm professionally, so Nikon was the obvious choice, but I had been put off by a little Coolpix I bought for my wife, which was a disaster. I needn't have worried. The D40X is superb. Being just an amateur again, I just wanted point-and-shoot most of the time, but the D40X gives me the freedom to take full control when I want to, and to use the superb Nikkor lenses from my film kit. The 18-70 lens I got with the D40X is pretty good, though.

The 2 real pluses are the excellent 10megapixel performance, and the instant start-up. The instruction book is excellent (English only, so you don't have to thumb through Albanian and Zulu to get to the bit you need). Memory and spare batteries are reasonable, so I can cover a long trip without the fear of running out.

It's light and reasonably compact (won't go in your pocket, but slips under a coat when security is a risk, or I want to do candids). Results so far have been very good, with excellent detail even when printing A4 from a quarter frame! Colour rendition is beautiful.

The D40X is an easy camera to use. Start off on the fully auto mode, and try out the other settings as you get used to it, and anyone can soon use it to its full potential.

Too early to assess durability and reliability yet. The only complaint is the strap. It slips through the lugs, so I had to resort to tying knots in it - so far so good.

  cracking 'little' big camera

I held several other dslrs to try out for size, comfort, viewfinder, etc. I had almost decided on the canon 400D. Then came the D40X. It felt right at home in my hands. All the other specs ticked the boxes in the right places. Got mine on Ebay, had no intention paying UK high street rip-off prices. The picture quality is superb, the colours the best I've seen (without touch up) on its rivals. It's soooo easy to use and for an slr beginner it's very friendly and intuitive. When I first got my D40X (3months ago now) I thought I'd outgrow it and go for the D80 but now I know I'll keep it and just get different lenses. As someone's already mentioned the strap is fiddly to attach and not secure but is very secure when you knot it at the ends.

It should be mentioned that there IS a difference between the D40 and D40X in one or two areas. The D40 is a 6 megapixel camera, pictures are razor sharp like the D40X, it's also nearly £100 cheaper than the 10megapixel D40X. But, and it's a big but, once you start cropping and want large prints made the D40X will do it nicely, the D40 wont (it'll be noisy,i.e.grainy). Also, make sure that the camera advertised is the D40X and not the D40. I had to ask two sellers which model they were selling. They had advertised the D40 as D40X but when I read the specs it was obvious they meant the earlier model. Another one vice versa. I dont think it was intentional they corrected their ads straight away. But do make sure there's an 'X' in the picture and/or read how many pixels in the seller's specs.

You should also bear in mind that both the D40 and D40X AF system is lens driven, not camera driven, which means if you want all focusing to be done automatically, not do it yourself then you can only use Nikon's AF-S lenses or Sigma's HSM lenses. The other Nikon lenses will work of course but you will have to do the focusing manually, which imo is not such a bad thing for real learning!

This camera is really cool and I can do lots of great stuff before I even load pictures onto the computer. It is a camera that is professional and affordable and I think it is the best in its price range. I would recommend it to anyone who either wants to get into photograhy or just wants to make some good quality pictures.

  Nikon D40x
Review created: 15/03/08

The camera is a good size for my wife to use. The battery lasts a very long time compared to other cameras we have had. Te lenses are of very good quality and produce some very good shots. The menu on the camera is simple and easy to use. We would certainly rec to any budding photographers.

However at max resolution the format becomes RAW instead of JPEG. Unfortunately the software which came with the camera unknown to me at the point of purchase is in Japanese only however the old software I had which came with my old Fuji work fine with Jpgs and I can download and amend as necessary.

All in all a good camera just watch out for the PC software.

I already had a compact digital camera and wished to advance to an SLR. The camera seems well made and takes good photographs. My only problem is there is no written manual, it comes on a CD. This causes a problem if you are out and wish to refer to the manual. I do not think you should have to print out 139 pages to get a copy.

I wanted a well known brand entry level DSLR and decided on this one. Boy am I glad I did. The camera itself is a joy to use and soon got used to its functions (which are very numerous). Having owned a film SLR I can thoroughly recommend this piece of kit to anyone considering digital photography with all the advantages of SLR.
On the minus side - there isn't one!

The Free iPhone Guide

To get yourself a free iPhone all you have to do is follow the 3 easy steps:

Step 1 : Sign up for a free iPhone
Sign up at the link below to get your free iPhone. We recommend this free iPhone site because it's been TRIED and TESTED to work.

http://kudosnetwork.co.uk/?ref=174 (copy and paste into browser)

You can choose other prizes like free consoles from this site too! Make sure you use a real email address. Use your real details when you sign up so that the company knows where to send your iPhone! Remember that they have been proven legitimate, so will send you your free iPhone if you do everything legitimately!

Step 2 : Try an advertiser's offer
Basically all you need to do in this step is complete one of the offers, this is where the freebie site make their money, if you complete an offer then the freebie site will recieve commission for it. So if you complete Coral which will only cost you £5 to complete, the freebie site gets £25 from Coral. The two best offers are Lovefilm Free DVD rental (rent two DVD's, keep them for about 2 days, send them back and then cancel the trial) and Coral (bet £5 on a sport). I would reccommend you do Coral as it credits in an hour and is really simple to do, Lovefilm however can become complicated and takes up to 2 weeks to credit! You can also try one of the other offers, most are gambling offers. Don't skip this step! You must complete this step to get your free iPhone!

Step 3 : Refer some friends
This part is a lot easier than it seems, especially now with free iPhone sites getting so popular. There's lots of people online who want a free iPhone too, so start referring them! You only need to get a few signups before you'll be finished. You can ask your friends or your online buddies. I already got a free PS3, Wii, and XBOX Elite without even having to ask my friends for help - there's lots of people online who want a free iPhone like you! One of the easiest ways to get a referral is to do a favour for a friend and ask them to sign up in return. That way, you both can get a free iPhone!

Basic rules
Don't break these rules! This is the only reason that you won't get your free iPhone, so make sure you follow these rules!

- One account per household - don't use a public computer to sign up!
- Use real information - this is a proven legitimate site and they will not give out your information.
- Only complete each offer once! You cannot complete the same offer again, even for different freebies.
- Don't try to cheat the system. This site has been proven legitimate, and they will catch you if you try to cheat. If you do everything legitimately, by following this guide, you will get a free iPhone!

Thats all, just follow my guide and you will have your free iPhone in no time.

Thank you.

  Nikon D40x Digital Camera

Having been a non digital CANON SLR (several models) user as a hobbyist and for various work, including aerial related projects, over many years the time came for a trial at this new digital technology. Two FUJI compact digitals (An A310 and Z1)later I was convinced that it was time to look for something more SLRish in the digital stables.
After much nail biting and research of reviews, the D40X seemed to have more to offer in most respects, not least in the price via an eBay trader. Having dealt with the trader before I was confident that the deal would be transacted thoroughly, which it was.
I have now had the D40X for a few weeks and although still in the familiarisation stage can only express total satisfaction so far.
In auto mode it performs very well in most conditions, a little tweak of the ISO rate in low light helped.
The standard lens at 18-55mm is versatile in range and the optics are producing excellent results in capturing clarity, sharpness, and colour.
I still have several menu options to put to the test but at this stage can not forsee any problems.
The programme controls are clear and easily accessible.
Pity there is no cable release socket on the shutter button, however, there are alternative ways around this.
Can't say I've had the problem with the strap working loose?
All in all, I am delighted with the D40X.
Sorry CANON/FUJI!

I knew once I had this camera in my hands that it would prove to be good and I have not been disappointed. I specialise in landscape photography but have found that this camera with the 135mm lens is just as good when it comes to display stills for listing etc.
It is worth the price most shops are selling it for at present and will no doubt come down in price as new cameras come on stream. It you want reliablity and an enjoyable camera to work with then look no further than this Nikon D40X.
Best regards
Iain

I had been watching prices and special offers through various retailers for the Nikon D40 and the D40X Cameras. Prices varied considerably. Checked out on Ebay and found both specifications available, new and used. Prices for new were more competative than retail outlets and offered more opportunities to purchase the product at a price I could influence. Great Deal.

I never thought I would be able to afford a top of the line digital SLR...but I am now the extremely pleased owner of a Nikon D40X.

With as sophisticated a piece of equipment as this I am sure I will still be learning in a years time...but as regards the basic automatic controls and use of the zoom lens provided..I am delighted already. I expected high quality results but the reality of the large viewing area and the excellent wide angle facility of the lens were a revelation.

Still to use close up possibilities..but not too worried about this as the definition is so good I will be able to zoom in using PC later on...

The price was so low compared to high street shops..I almost feel sorry for them!

  Nikon..... Quality again & again!!!!
Review created: 03/12/07
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I have had several Nikons in my lifetime, and they never loose the quality
from model to model, before i bought the D40X i upgraded from the Coolpix
8800(which is also a fantastic camera) the D40X is so easy to use, with its
bright clear screen, its large lettering display is a godsend if, like me, your
eyesight aint so good!
This camera can photograph anything, no problem, just set the "Mode" dial on
top of the camera to anything from.. fast action sports, night shots, portrait, close up, or even Child Mode!
In use the D40X is very fast in Auto Focus, this i really like, when shooting
action, & using "Continuous" shutter!
You really cant go wrong with this camera, its got like a built-in manual, if
theres something you dont understand in a mode setting, just press the "?"
button and its all explained!
If your upgrading to a Digital SLR this is the one for you, good quality
pictures, a good range of lenes, and ease of use... i could say.. foolproof!
The price is right to, you could save about £100 on a Grey import, but beware
you wont have a warranty! and the CD "Picture Project" will be in Japanese!

Compared Olympus, Canon, Nikon and others using magazines and on-line comparison sites and then went to different retailers to 'get a feel' of the cameras with different lenses. Even though a regular Canon EOS user, decided to go for the Nikon. It feels more comfortable, better balanced and even though there are loads of buttons, the on-screen menu is very clear - even a novice SLR user would be able to get started easily.
I used the camera with 55-200 lens at a Golden Wedding Anniversary party and the 10.2megapixels resulted in superb quality pictures.
A relative borrowed it and is so impressed he's buying one himself.
