A very different experience to her work with Stock, Aitken, Waterman featuring the hits "Confide In Me" (a dance tinged balled, which really shows Kylie maturing in her music) and my favourite track "Put Yourself In My Place" which has a brilliant video to match features Kylie's version of the opening scenes of the classic 60s sci-fi "Barbarella".
key tracks... confide in me surrender put yourself in my place dangerous game
anticipation was high for kylie, from fans and critics alike, for her fist album away from the comfort zone of stock/aitken/waterman. working with the cream of dance producers including m people, brothers in rhythm and the rapino brothers, kylie certainly had a good head start. 'confide in me' opens the album, and remains one of kylie's best songs to date. everyone was astounded at the strength and range of kylie's voice, and it soars in this epic dance track.
next up is 'surrender' a cool and soulful song which really should have been released as a single. the gorgeous and under-rated 'put yourself in my place' and 'dangerous game' add a gentle balance to the dance numbers, and are two of the best ballads she has ever made. and the album ends on a high with a cover of the old nothern soul track 'time will pass you by'. there are a couple of tracks that dont really impress, especially the pet shop boys track 'falling'. but all in all a great start for the new era of kylie minogue!!
I bought this CD to fill a gap in my Kylie collection. It is a great selection of songs from a time in Kylie's career that I feel is quite under-rated. Songs such as the gorgeous Put Yourself In My Place deserve higher recognition. The tracks fit together perfectly and not one is a simple 'album-filler' - they all stand out in their own way. An essential part of any music lover's collection.
Kylie did a brave thing in 1993. She left behind the very successful formalic pop world of Stock, Aitken & Waterman and walked into the unknown of an indie/dance label and issued this first release from her on the Deconstruction label. The growth of Kylie is evident on this CD - even on the cover Kylie is dressed in a plain trouser suit and horn-rimmed glasses with her full name stated clearly underneath: Kylie Minogue. Not the fluffy lovely bubbly Kylie we knew from the late '80s but a new, maturer Kylie Minogue who means business.
Impressively, she took an active role in planning the album and sought a diverse group of artists to collaborate with including the Pet Shop Boys, Heller & Farley, Brothers In Rhythm and M People. Clearly a bold attempt to broaden her fan base, extend herself as an artist and shake-off the SAW label forever.
Although the songs are good individually - especially "Falling", "Confide In Me" and "Put Yourself In My Place", the whole album together seems a little disjointed because each song is of a different style - some dance, some R n B, some soul....and back again. Another personal downside is that one of the best cover versions she did at the time was omitted from this issue (only available on the Japanese version) - "Nothing Can Stop Us Now" which is well worthy of being included - perhaps on a reissue?
Still, the album is a good effort and makes easy chill-out, listening music. Plus you can't help to be impressed by Kylie for boldly going where her SAW contemporaries would fear to tread. And thank goodness she did because what would pop be like with no Kylie?!
