  Nice try...

I'll start off by saying I'm a huge Minogue sisters fan, so I really tried to love BODY LANGUAGE. But just because I'm a fan doesn't mean I'm going to throw in the words `Stunning' and `must own' just because the Minogue name is stamped on the cover. In fact the term `grower' may be too generous for some of the tracks.

I don't want to write Kylie off for trying something new - in fact it's what I love about the sisters. But I'm afraid to say Min has missed the mark this time round. The direction was ok (but dare I say it? At times it comes a little too close to someone's superior GIRL & NEON NIGHTS albums), but too much thought went into the style and not the substance. There were no catchy sing-along tracks.

In fact, when it comes to the track list, apart from the singles `Slow', `Red Blooded Woman', and `Chocolate' (Only above average), I'm hard pushed to remember any of the songs. I can remember `Obsession' & 'Loving Days' are also above average, though they don't yell hit. And I only remember `Secret (Take You Home)' for Kylie's `rapping'. The rest of the album isn't bad; it's just boring which is just as disappointing for someone I admire so much.
(On the other hand, the single b sides `Soul On Fie' & `Almost A Lover' have that Kylie passion in them. `City Games' is catchy, something you can sing0-alongtoo. `Cruise Control' is blah).

A nice try, but Kylie tried too hard to be different for the sake of being different.

  A classy diva.

"Body Language" is Kylie's "big step forward." Sure it's still simple dance-pop, but this time she and a team of producers and writers; including Kurtis Mantronik; put together an album that works as a piece. It's stylish without being smarmy, retro without being ironic, and its energy never gets annoying. In other words: a near perfect pop record.

Instead of opting for more of the light dance and disco-pop of her previous two releases, Kylie has sought to expand her horizons. Adding elements of electro, '80s synth pop, bouncy club beats; even a bit of Eminem-style rap; she's found the formula that not only makes her vocal shortcomings irrelevant, Kylie exudes a sense of class through this album (and a relatively low profile). Put together, this may well be the best album of her career. Simply, "Body Language" is what happens when a dance-pop diva takes the high road and focuses on what's important instead of trying to shock herself into continued relevance.

key tracks...
chocolate
red blooded woman
secret (take you home)
someday

with the massive success of 'fever' kylie once again changed styles, and instead of making 'fever 2' she changed style once again for her 3rd album of the new millenium.

gone are the chunky trance beats, and in come smooth, soulful grooves. when first single from the album 'slow' was released, we all gasped and thought "what???" but as she jettisoned back to number 1 with it, we all released that kylie is no one trick pony, and 'slow' soon got into our heads and is a great opener to the album. kylie's vocals are much softer on this album, and the production is a polished affair. the best example is standout track 'chocolate' kylie's whispering vocals, over smooth beats, and great instumentation make for one of kylie's beat ever tracks, and the catchy r'n'b pop smash 'red blooded woman' is up there as one of the all time great pop songs.

the ms dynamite penned track 'secret' is a great track that should have been a single, and 'someday' is a great song, and has more than a two fingers up to her ex loverat boyfriend james gooding. this is a smooth, accomplished album which mixes commercial and critical success with ease. even trendy music magazine Q had this album listed in their top 50 albums of 2003. if you havent got this album, get it..if you have got it, dust it off and pop it into your cd player...it sounds as fresh today as it did in 2003

Kylie Minogue - Body Language (CD 2003) HDCD

I bought this CD on the strength of the hit single 'Can't Get You Out Of My Head' which is an excellent track and really did sound superb on HDCD. Unfortunately the rest of the album was awful, although sounding good quality, the songs are too mushy and had me running for the bucket. Kylies' voice was softened to the extent of sounding wheezy like she was whispering in your ear. If you're the kind of weirdo that gets off on that kind of thing then you'll love it. If you prefer classic sounding Kylie, avoid it like the plague and just buy the single on 12" vinyl, if you can find one.
