Hugh Grant plays a character not too far away from Andrew Ridgley from Wham! Years after his original fame he must write a song for a Britney Spears like singer. Only problem is he can write the music but has trouble with lyrics, until his home help stumbles into his life..... you can guess the rest, but who cares, it's great. Plus Hugh does all his own singing, in fact he's can hold a tune - better than Andrew Ridgley then !
Alex Fletcher (Hugh Grant) is a washed-up 80s pop star who's been reduced to working the nostalgia circuit at country fairs and amusement parks. The charismatic and talented musician gets a chance at a comeback when reigning diva Cora Corman invites him to write and record a duet with her, but there's a problem – Alex hasn't written a song in years, he's never written lyrics, and he has to come up with a hit in a matter of days.
Enter Sophie Fisher (Drew Barrymore), Alex's beguilingly quirky plant lady, whose flair for words strikes a chord with the struggling songwriter. On the rebound from a bad relationship, Sophie is reluctant to collaborate with anyone, especially commitment-phobe Alex. As their chemistry heats up at the piano and under it, Alex and Sophie will have to face their fears – and the music – if they want to find the love and success they both deserve
Seen this film at the pictures but even funnier second time round. Excellent bargain and im sure ill watch it many more times. Definate Hugh Grnat classic...
This is a brilliant film my son and daughter think it is so funny and have watched it three times since it came. A wonderful film from Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore.
Brilliant film with everything for guys and gals alike! Drew at her best n funniest! Just a great film to enjoy with friends or snuggle on sofa with the one you love! Get your giggle gurdle ready!
I love this film it's romantic, funny - and well I happen to be a Hugh Grant fan. I also love the music and went on to buy the CD. If you like Hugh Grant and let's face it not everyone does, but then again you wouldn't be considering buying this film in the first place, you'll enjoy the film. It is quite a girly film, but it even got a few laughs from my husband who'll be the first to admit that he's not a Hugh Grant fan.The story is probably predictable, but then again Hugh Grant films usually are. Excellent film for a good night in.
Even if you are not a child of the eighties, you will find it hard not to sing along with the fab pop tunes that hugh grant sings in this film!! Its fantastic, very funny and a great feel good movie. both drew and hugh play excellent roles and should definatley do another film together. Trust me - this film is SSSSOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOo much better than American Dreamz!!!!!
i bought this dvd as me and my daughter watched this film in the cinema and she loved it. she is 13 and this film is really cool for any age. i bought this dvd cheap sealed and was very happy with the product many thanks
If you're a Hugh Grant fan then this one ticks all the usual boxes plus he gets to sing as well! Formulaic but maybe that's what we expect and like about Hugh, it's fun and it's surprising how many witty remarks are missed first time around so worth watching a couple of times. Catchy music and a real throw back to those of us who witnessed 80's pop first hand. Best watched with a bottle of plonk and a good log fire, enjoy!
If you loved Hugh Grant's other films, you will love this. Hugh plays a washed-out 80's pop singer and is given the task of writing a song for an up to date, Britney Spears type artist. Problem is he ca write the tune but id useless at the lyrics. He comes across a girl who is just what he needs. A typical easy watching comedy romance. LOVED IT!!
If you're looking for gentle entertainment and a romcom that's genuinely romantic and funny then this is the film for you. Washed-up 80s has-been Alex Fletcher (Grant) gets the chance to make a comeback duetting with a Britney Spears-alike teen idol. Can he write the perfect song in just 3 days? Enter Sophie (Drew Barrymore) a ditzy plant-waterer with a natural talent for lyric writing. Put the two together and the sparks fly and the song gets written. Relish it for the sparky relationship between the two leads, some brilliant one-liners, a great song and a very slushy ending - oh yes - and a hilarious 80s parody band - yes, the 80s were that bad!
The film stars Hugh Grant - well known for his stumbling, bumbling characters who finally gets the girl.
Hugh plays a singer called Alex Fletcher from an 80's band called PoP. His partner in the band decides to go his separate way, taking Hugh's and his final songs with him and having a huge success...while Hugh goes on to playing at State fairs and theme parks.
Up and coming pop star Cora decides she wants Hugh to write a song for her in just a matter of days, so Hugh's manager hires the help of an 'edgy' lyricist who tries to get him to compose a song he's not happy with.
Emter Sophie Fisher - Drew Barrymore - as a dippy girl who comes to water his plants. Hugh realises she has a talent at writing songs and asks her to help him. At first she refuses, as she has also had her work undermined and used against her by an ex-lover...but eventually she agrees - with the help of the tone-deaf receptionist at the apartment block where Hugh lives. A comical scene ensues which had me in stitches both times I watched it!
Sparks fly under the piano and Hugh and Drew finally finish their song. Cora is pleased, but wants an extra verse. The couple have an argument, and Hugh is left to finish the last verse alone. At the concert, he sings a little 'ditty' he has put together, telling Drew how much she means to him. He also finds out that she has faxed across the final verse to the song to help him out.
A brilliant film - although I was unsure I would like it as I'm not a keen Drew fan - with some catchy tunes (I've found myself singing 'Pop Goes My Heart' several times since watching it!) and a surprisingly good singing voice from Hugh.
On first watching, I found this film to be a fairly run-of-the mill romcom - entertaining but ultimately forgettable.
However, 3 days later I couldn't work out what I was humming & it was one of the songs from this movie - I ended up watching the whole thing again & really enjoying it.
Kristen Johnson as Drew's sister is fantastic - such a natural comedienne & a real scene stealer.
Overall I would recommend it - though I think it will be enjoyed more by those of us who actually remember the 80s!
Hugh Grant plays another 'a bit of an idiot but terribly likable' character so well known by anyone who's watched his films. Drew Barrymore plays another 'sweet, slightly crazy, but cutely lovable' character. The two work strangely well together and make this film funny and entertaining with an 'awww' factor. Definitely one to watch.
Its a charming movie that reminds you that love isnt about jumping in the sack, its 2 people finding each other and its no better displayed by this romantic tale
I WENT TO SEE THIS FILM AT THE CINEMA, AND THOUGHT IT WAS THE BEST FILM I HAD SEEN IN AGES. ANYONE IN THEIR 40'S CAN RELATE TO THE WHAM TYPE HYPE OF THE 80'S. I HAVE SINCE WATHCED IT WITH MY 11 YEAR OLD, WHO ALSO THINKS IT IS GREAT.
I loved this film, totally harmless and great fun, I loved seeing Hugh Grant dancing in the 80's 'POP' band - the music is great in it too - just a really nice all round family, couple film. I liked it alot, so did my husband and he really thought it wouldn't be his kind of film.
This movie was one of the funniest romantic comedies I have watched in a long time. The movie starts off with the ridiculous music video of PoP! Goes My Heart. Don't give up on it here if you think it's stupid - carry on watching. You will be surprised at how good the movie actually is.
Hugh Grant acts as Alex an 80's "Has-Been" from the band PoP! Cora, a huge teen popstar, wants Alex to write a song for her. The problem is Alex is rubbish at lyrics, that's when he meets Sophie (Drew Barrimore)and together they start on the song . . .
This movie is great fun and will leave you in stiches.
[And just letting you in on a secret, I loved PoP! so much that I went back and watched the music video on You Tube. It's so funny!]
