Not neccessarily one of the goriest films out there, though I must admit I did buy it just for the gore and cringe factor. The special effects are not all that great throughout either. Some parts are super, others... not so super. If you're wanting blood and guts then this film has it, if you're wanting a cringe-worthy film then this film also has it... particularly if you like your achilles tendons...

What makes this film even better is the way it is set, normal people like you and I snatched from the streets. Being bought for torture - pain, one of the biggest fears of any human being... and this film is pretty much all about it!

The downside of this film for me was the build up to the action. For the first 15-30 minutes of the film there is nothing much happening, but then the fun begins. And what follows makes up for the boring bit at the beginning...

This was billed as being gory beyond belief, and while it's true that there are some very gory scenes in it, they're not necessarily any worse than some in other movies. However, the gory scenes in themselves are actually, unfortunately for viewers, the best part of the film. Because the plot is virtually non existent.
The film begins on an interesting note in the first scene, where we creepily hear someone whistling in a torture chamber, but the entire build up to the actual torture and murder scenes themselves is both boring and confusing.
For far too long in the film, nothing of any real note or relevance happens- the characters are young people who are in Holland to get prostitutes. And that really is it. Nothing expands on this or shows anything exciting happening. The attempts to be mysterious in terms of the plot backfires, and leads to confusion, leaving people thinking "What's going on?"
After the mind numbingly slow pace of seemingly meaningless events, the film suddenly changes pace and this time, goes too fast, rushing through the main event of the torture scenes, before the film suddenly ends. The characters depths are paper thin and diluted, which is annoying as the film drags on for so long you'd think they'd have spent the time explaining the characters and building a better structure to the chain of events leading up to the end of the film.
However it's not all doom and gloom. The characters, despite being shallow, are portrayed for exactly what they are- kids on a holiday having fun, drawn into a horrific nightmare beyond their control and without knowing why. The film doesn't pretend otherwise, or shy away from showing this. Also, once the film reaches the torture scenes, it's a good watch from then on in. And admittedly, although they are rushed, the torture scenes themselves are certainly gruesome. There is also a bit of a twist at the end, adding to the end of the film.
But overall, that really is the problem-it's the end of the film where everything happens and even that doesn't make up for all the pointless confusion and tediousness you have to sit through before it reaches anything worthwhile. Once it has started getting good, it's all over.
It's not the worst film ever made, but it's not great either. A nice idea should really have come off better. Overall, there's some scenes well worth watching, and from these scenes to the end of the film, it picks up somewhat along with the pace. But as a film overall, it's not that good. When you put the good bits against the bad bits, the result is a very average film..

Hostel is a puerile horror film which will most appeal to an audience the censor says cannot see it. The set-up is the stuff of teenage dreams: two American backpackers (Jay Hernandez and Derek Richardson) are told of a terrific Slovakian stop-over where the beer is cheap and the women are easy. They go and so it proves, but there's a dark secret hiding here, and lots of gory, not particularly imaginative brutality for both actors and audience to endure.

Writer/director Eli Roth made effective horror pastiche Cabin Fever and Hostel has fervent fans within the horror community. It was also a box office hit in America. Clearly, some UK filmgoers will appreciate it. Others may be repulsed by the blood, guts and torture. Still more might be bored. Because beyond its "How far can I go?" attitude to violence, Hostel has no reason to exist. And for all the talk of it being one of the harshest ever mainstream horror releases, the film pales next to the work of its primary influence, Takashi Miike (the Japanese director behind Audition and Gozu, who has a clunky cameo here).

"SHALLOW STORY"

So, if the shocks don't shock you, what is there? The pacing is off, the characters one-note, the dialogue witless. You could claim it's a reflection on our numbness in the face of brutality (from Abu Ghraib to Guantánamo), or an ironic comment on European attitudes to America, but that's a stretch. You're left with a shallow story, a bit of nudity, and a movie that, for all its blood, remains rather anaemic.

An utterly, utterly disappointing film. A great premise destroyed by Hollywood. The special effects are atrocious and the acting abysmal. One of the worst horror films of all time to be honest. Stick to Japan and Korea for your horror - they know how to do it properly!

Recently bought hostel off ebay site. I was recommended it by a friend and thoroughly enjoyed it much to say hiding behind a pillow when the extreme torture scenes started. A good outlay to the story and would recommend not to be watched on your own. Took me ages to sleep that night.

This was creepy, sickening & totally insane...but you just couldn't help thinking "what if it were real...". We all know something of the seedier and dark side of the nature of humans and I think most of us know very little is impossible if enough money is at stake. Snuff films are a reality...they happen! So could this.....? You will want to watch Hostel 2.

The Free iPhone Guide

To get yourself a free iPhone all you have to do is follow the 3 easy steps:

Step 1 : Sign up for a free iPhone
Sign up at the link below to get your free iPhone. We recommend this free iPhone site because it's been TRIED and TESTED to work.

http://Gifts.real-incentives.com/2992 (copy and paste into browser)

You can choose other prizes like free consoles from this site too! Make sure you use a real email address. Use your real details when you sign up so that the company knows where to send your iPhone! Remember that they have been proven legitimate, so will send you your free iPhone if you do everything legitimately!

Step 2 : Try an advertiser's offer
Basically all you need to do in this step is complete one of the offers, this is where the freebie site make their money, if you complete an offer then the freebie site will recieve commission for it. So if you complete Coral which will only cost you £5 to complete, the freebie site gets £25 from Coral. The two best offers are Lovefilm Free DVD rental (rent two DVD's, keep them for about 2 days, send them back and then cancel the trial) and Coral (bet £5 on a sport). I would reccommend you do Coral as it credits in an hour and is really simple to do, Lovefilm however can become complicated and takes up to 2 weeks to credit! You can also try one of the other offers, most are gambling offers. Don't skip this step! You must complete this step to get your free iPhone!

Step 3 : Refer some friends
This part is a lot easier than it seems, especially now with free iPhone sites getting so popular. There's lots of people online who want a free iPhone too, so start referring them! You only need to get a few signups before you'll be finished. You can ask your friends or your online buddies. I already got a free PS3, Wii, and XBOX Elite without even having to ask my friends for help - there's lots of people online who want a free iPhone like you! One of the easiest ways to get a referral is to do a favour for a friend and ask them to sign up in return. That way, you both can get a free iPhone!

Basic rules
Don't break these rules! This is the only reason that you won't get your free iPhone, so make sure you follow these rules!

- One account per household - don't use a public computer to sign up!
- Use real information - this is a proven legitimate site and they will not give out your information.
- Only complete each offer once! You cannot complete the same offer again, even for different freebies.
- Don't try to cheat the system. This site has been proven legitimate, and they will catch you if you try to cheat. If you do everything legitimately, by following this guide, you will get a free iPhone!

Thats all, just follow my guide and you will have your free iPhone in no time.

Thank you.

Hostel
It seems that today’s horror genre is no longer focusing on fear and bumps in the night, they cut out the middle man and go straight for the gore. It's not a question of how scary a film can get, but how many audiences it can make heave at the amount of blood gore and major gashes that the victims suffer.

The one that really set the trend lately was Saw, audiences were shocked to the core to see a woman raid through a body for a key to a helmet that was going to rip her head open-only catch was that the body she was rummaging through was still alive…This original idea was something so horrifying but still managed to excel in popularity, it also loosened up the restraints for what filmmakers could throw onto the publics laps.

It didn’t stop there though, the Jigsaw man and his twisted games returned for another slice in Saw II. Once again, not holding back on the psychological and visual horror that was executed so well in its previous instalment.

Now, a new film is challenging the Saw series in turning the audience’s stomachs with Hostel, and like the previously reviewed V For Vendetta, this too has a big name stamped all over it, Quentin Tarantino is the executive producer of the film with Eli Roth-who previously directed the gore fest that was Cabin Fever. But just like V, was all the publicity and big names behind the film nothing more then something to brag about?

Set in Europe, Hostel tells the story of three young backpackers who are informed of another youth boarding house not seen on the map somewhere in Slovakia, where the ladies are top notch and have a weakness for American men. Feeling stupid to turn down the chance, the men follow their urges and set off for the dream hostel. Arriving to greet everything they were hoping for, the place is a shag fest. The dream doesn’t last for long though, when it ends up that Paxton (Jay Hernandez) is the only backpacker remaining of the three, he sets out find where his two other buddies have disappeared to-dumbass…

The search for his friends turns quickly to something Paxton could never have imagined in his darkest nightmares, as he is imprisoned and become subject to a perverted world of torture and murder, where people pay to fulfil there darkest desire to decapitate, disfigure and destroy their victims by any means necessary. Paxton is in a life or slow and painful death situation, and he’s going to try very hard to take the first option…

Right, I’m going to get straight to the point if Saw made you heave, Hostel’s going to do pretty much the same job-as I’m sad to say I Saw (pardon the pun) this as pretty much the same thing. In fact, give it a sprinkle of the village folk from An American Werewolf In London and The Wicker Man and you’re there.

Don’t get me wrong this is a very good idea to put on film, but there are certain aspects of it that you’ve probably seen before. A scene in which Paxton enters the village pub seemed so reminiscent of The Slaughtered Lamb from American Werewolf, I was almost shocked to not see the folk warn with “stay off the moors, lad.”

But with all the slaying I’m continuing to give it the one thing it did do a good job in was the horror and fear factor.

  HOSTEL DVD REVIEW - GREAT!!!!
Review created: 10/09/07(updated 10/09/07)

I must say I am most impressed by this horror film - the best thing Mr Tarantino has been involved with too!
I have seen many many horror films and this really is a chiller - Whatever you do don't read up about it before you see it or it will ruin all the plot twists!!!!!!!!
Just watch it! - Although be warned that it is quite gruesome towards the end and more than earns its 18 Certificate!!!
Best Horror since the 'Final Destination' Films!!!

  warning NOT for under 18!
Review created: 14/08/07

The film was ok, it was set in Slovakia so i could connect easily and the plot is pretty much layed out for you but it did make me feel sick!

WAY too much blood and pointless killings and everything the film has no true meaning just killing?? no practical reason for the killing

and guess what in hostel 2 you still don't find a clear answer and i am guessigng hostel 3 will be just the same as the other 2!

I would NEVER recommend this film to ANY1 under 18 as it really is sick and i would not recommend this for a couple for the night in, you will just be sick.
