Due to the huge success of the LOTR trilogy and the fact that it was fantastically groundbreaking, every time Peter Jackson now comes to make a movie it is going to be hyped beyond believe, and like this one sometimes there gonna fall a little short. Don't get me wrong there is nothing terminally wrong with this flick its a pretty solid action adventure, its just not in the same league as LOTR's. Lets look at the plus sides of the film, for a start the sound and effects are amazing and to be honest I would not expect anything less from Mr Jackson, hence the oscars for the sound editing etc. The cast is excellent, Andy Serkis is carving out a nice little sub genre in acting (the CGI actor) that at the moment he is monopolizing, and Jack Black proves that he can actually act outside of the 90 min comedy. As-well as this the Ape/Girl love story resinate very well through out the film. Okay now my biggest beef! that being why make a 90 min classic 3 hours plus long. Now I know that this movie was a labour of love, Jackson did well to get the rights, but you can draw things out for to long. You just feel that if the movie had of ended an hour earlier you would have walked out feeling completely satisfied but with that extra hour plus you just walk out feeling...as-well......a little bit fatigued. Now despite my niggles I did still think the movie was watch-able but it just wasn't the classic we all expected!

  A near-HD quality DVD
Review created: 25/07/08

Let's face it, if you're reading this it means you're thinking of buying this DVD - and that most probably means you've already seen this great film.
Therefore here's a very, very brief review: Great film, shot with the feel of an epic production at times (though thanks to CGI and greenscreen these days, what film isn't?), and a great performance from Andy Serkis as Kong (and Lumpy). In short, however good this film is, it will always remain a tad marmite - you'll either love it or hate it (well, not hate it, but maybe find it boring).
Still, definately worth owning, in particular as the transfer quality is so great. I've played this on my upscaling PS3, on a 50" Samsung Full HD Plasma, and can honestly say this DVD will give some BluRay discs a run for their money. The extras on the 2 disc edition are pretty good too, but for my money I'd track down the Extended edition, which in true Peter Jackson fashion, pulls all the stops as far as features and extras are concerned.

Final verdict: Find the 2 disc edition for about £5 and I promise you won't be disappointed.
J

Spectacular, clumsy, hilarious, ludicrously self-indulgent, terrifying and far too long, Peter Jackson's remake of the 1933 classic is a monster in every sense. Throwing economy to the winds, Jackson has staged the romance between struggling actress Naomi Watts and her giant gorilla as tragedy on a Shakespearian scale. It doesn't always work, but when it does, King Kong really is the eighth wonder of the world.

The original Kong lasts for a trim 100 minutes. In this version, it takes nearly that long before we even get to meet the title character. First we spend some time in a thrillingly recreated 30s New York, and then the film gets stuck in a boat for simply ages with obsessed movie director Carl Denham (Jack Black) and his crew. This interlude, marred as it is by portents of doom and clanging dialogue, is a bit of a trial.

Things improve when Denham and his explorers arrive on Skull Island, where they must survive all manner of digital dangers, from rampaging dinosaurs to an utterly repulsive swarm of giant insects.

"MARVELLOUSLY EXPRESSIVE"

Finally, Kong makes his entrance, and he's worth the wait. Jackson's team has created a marvellously expressive, menacing and tragic beast. In a film stuffed with superb performances - Watts, in particular, is wonderful - it's the monkey who deserves the Oscar.

If anything, there is too much action in Kong. The relentless chases and smackdowns start to grind after a while. Instead, the moments that stay with you are the quiet ones: beauty and her doomed beast, just hanging around and enjoying the view.

A desperate filmmaker and his crew journey to an unmapped island and its jungle hellhole, where they encounter a land riddled with monsters and ruled over by a giant ape. The Lord Of The Rings filmmakers Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh remake the touchstone film of fantasy cinema with the faithfulness of adoring fans
A giant simian hand grabs for Ann Darrow, as famously played by Fay Wray. She opens her mouth and lets out an ear-splitting scream. Welcome to the birth of fantasy cinema.

Starring in the original King Kong (1933), Fay Wray was the damsel who bewitched the enormous gorilla Kong, brought to life by the special effects wizardry of Willis O'Brien, who had earlier created the dinosaurs for The Lost World (1925). A young Ray Harryhausen stumbled out of a screening of Kong, inspired to spend his life crafting stop-motion monsters, most notably the skeleton army of Jason And The Argonauts. These days, Harryhausen lives in West London in a grand, gloomy house with his Oscar, long retired in the age of computer special effects, an age inaugurated by Jurassic Park and its astonishingly lifelike dinosaurs. Its sequel would be titled The Lost World - Jurassic Park, an acknowledgement of Willis O'Brien's epoch-making work all those decades earlier.

King Kong is the Citizen Kane of fantasy cinema. All roads lead from it. In remaking the definitive B-Movie, director Peter Jackson and his writing partner (and wife) Fran Walsh approach it with the care and love of true fans, retaining screeds of dialogue, here and there matching it scene for scene, shot for shot, including the moment when the giant ape reaches for Ann Darrow, here played by Naomi Watts, and she lets out a suitably terrified, histrionic scream.

King Kong has been remade before, by Dino De Laurentiis in the 1970s heyday of the Disaster Movie; the plot was updated for contemporary sensibilities and climaxed not with the giant ape scaling the Empire State Building but with it swinging between the Twin Towers of the World Trade Centre. From its opening titles, set in Futurist type, Peter Jackson's King Kong winds the clock back to the 1930s, setting his remake in the same period as the original. Mercifully we are to be spared another "reimagining" - as Hollywood calls it when it strips out the guts of an intellectual property and replaces them with a set of mechanical, mass-produced moving parts.

An opening montage introduces us to New York in The Great Depression, a time when former stockbrokers foraged in bins for half-eaten apples and a vaudeville actress like Ann Darrow might have to work as a painted lady in a burlesque if she is not to starve. She is spotted on the doorstep of her damnation by film producer Carl Denham, played by Jack Black. "I am someone you can trust, Ann. I am a movie producer," he assures her. A corrupt cherubim sucking on bottles of whisky for comfort, Denham has a devouring ambition that chows down on talent and money alike, and it is this drive to get his film made that lands him, Darrow and writer Jack Driscoll, played by Adrien Brody, on a boat to remote Skull Island, the last unmapped spot on the face of the Earth.

Verdict
As it is a remake, it doesn't have the shock Lord Of The Rings possessed upon its release, but this is a beautiful beast of a B-movie, thrilling and touching.

We watched as a family, a testimony to the film was that we remained together until the end. It is a long film, but can be broken into four parts. 1 Anne Darrow's plight in depression hit New York, Jackson did an excellent job of creating the right seedy atmosphere and the street scenes were outstanding. 2. the ocean voyage with the menace slowly building. 3. The fantastically exciting scene on Skull Island, in which the CGI added some fantastic and thrilling scenes and finally the sad outcome back in NY. we all know the story but it was fantastically told.

t is 1933, and vaudeville actress Ann Darrow (Oscar nominee Naomi Watts) has found herself - like so many other New Yorkers during the Great Depression - without the means to earn a living. Unwilling to compromise and allow herself to sink into a career in burlesque, she considers her limited options while aimlessly wandering the streets of Manhattan. When her hunger drives her to unsuccessfully try to steal an apple from a fruit vendor's stall, she is rescued - literally - by filmmaker and multiple hyphenate Carl Denham (Jack Black).

It seems that the entrepreneur-raconteur-adventurer is no stranger to theft, having that day lifted the only existing print of his most recent and unfinished film from under his studio executives' noses when they threatened to pull his completion funds. Carl has until the end of the day to get his crew onboard the Singapore-bound tramp steamer, the S.S. Venture, in hopes of completing his travelogue/action film. With that, the showman is certain he will finally achieve the personal greatness he knows awaits him around the corner - and although the crew believe that corner to be Singapore, Denham actually hopes to find and capture on film the mysterious place of legend: Skull Island.

Unfortunately for Carl, his headlining actress has pulled out of his project, but his search for a size-four leading lady (the costumes have all been made) has, fatefully, led him to Ann. The struggling actress is reluctant to sign on with Denham, until she learns that the up-and-coming, socially relevant playwright Jack Driscoll (Oscar winner Adrien Brody) is penning the screenplay - the fees his friend Carl pays for potboiling adventure are a welcome supplement to Driscoll's nominal income from his stage plays.

With his newly discovered star and coerced screenwriter reluctantly onboard, Denham's 'moving picture ship' heads out of New York Harbor... and toward a destiny that none aboard could possibly foresee...KING KONG!!!

Loved this movie. It brings together really impressive cgi, good acting and a great story line. I haven't seen the original King Kong so won't compare the two. It provides some action, romance, adventure and grabs at the heart strings. The computer graphic images are good and its just as good on the small screen as it was on the big screen. If you loved Jurassic Park then this will suit you or if you just like a good no thinking entertainment big budget movie then this is great.

Long, but well made and worth watching for the effects!
Review created: 05/02/08

The original has better acting and was a classic in its time but peter jackson has still picked stars who can bring this newer film up to date. It is a long one so prepare yourself but when you are in the mood for watching a long film this is certainly one that comes to mind. The effects are brilliant which is something most have come to expect from peter jackson movies eg lord of the rings. You need a large telly and decent suirround sound to make the most of this film then it is much easier watch plus the mrs will like it because of the sad bits!

This film is a beutiful film to watch so it is excellent to test your Av system with fantastic sound affects. The film is quite long as many people have mentioned but I believe that it doesnt matter as you find alot more backround story to king kong in this movie compared to other remakes. Once thing I cant believe is this movie was rated as 12 certificate. its much gorier than any Jurassic Park and would have like to see this a 15 at least

  Thoroughly tedious
Review created: 21/07/07(updated 21/07/07)
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I do enjoy a good monster movie. Unfortunately, this isn't a good monster movie.

Enter King Kong himself, a giant ape who, to be brutally honest, looks more like something from a Chewits advert than the product of our latest state-of-the-art special effects techniques.

Then enter the characters, who are somewhat over the top and consequently not very believable (and not exactly portrayed by the world's finest actors either), and you have something which will leave most action adventure fans disappointed.

The film is slow to get going, and then once the explorers reach the monster monkey's homeland the action continues at an equally mind-numbing pace. There seems to be little in the way of plot development - the story just lurches from one scene to another and can easily tend to leave you wondering why you bothered.

I feel like one of those grumpy old men you see on TV now, so I'll call a halt to this review, except to say - if you're going to watch it, wait til it's in the cheap rentals section, that way you haven't wasted too much of your hard-earned money on it!
