I am a huge Final Fantasy fan but this movie was slightly disappointing mainly down to it not living up to its famous name and hype. There is no denying the CGI is amazing and there are some parts of the film that are jaw dropping good. But the storyline is confusing in places to average film goers and it was no surprise this movie made monumental losses at the box office. I did actually enjoy this film but in a kind of 'yeah that was ok but could have been so much better' way. The story is about a young scientist called Aki Ross who has been infected with a alien parasite and to be cured must locate the missing spirits to cure herself, save the planet and heal the pain of the afore mentioned alien beings. Confused? So were a lot of people. I look at this movie as a massive experiment to see what its makers Square could do with the technology avaliable to them, and as anyone who has seen their latest efforts (Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children) as a experiment, albeit a very costly one, it was a success. As a movie that would hook and entertain the general cinema going population is fell quite short. I did watch this at the cinema but it was only the Final Fantasy name that got me there. I have got it on DVD but only as I am a collector of Final Fantasy related items. I cannot say I would actually have purchased it otherwise (£1.99 bargain from Ebay at that!) Undeniably there are a few core elements that make this film stand out, mainly the impressive use of CGI. If you do watch it a couple of times the story is understandable and to some degree enjoyable but its not one of those films you can totally love in a watch 20 times kind of way. Good but not quite good enough.
I wanted to buy this as i really like the franchise and so had to have the movie. I searched for it and easily found this one. It was cheap and it got to me really quick.
It is an excellent movie that if you know the Final Fantasy franchise you will absolutely love. If you are not familiar with this movie then its detailed story-line and amazing visual effects, as this movie is entirely in CG, will definitely interest anyone with an imaginative mind.
The movie is brilliant with excellent bonus features. It is a must have. Well, for me atleast.
Excellent film and the dvd was in excellent condition !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Was quite good thought it could have been alot better. Just felt a bit let down at the end. I always like to see a bit extra on the end to see how things turned out.
i have seen this film before and really enjoyed it. they could of done abit more with the story line but overall it's a film i would watch over and over again.
My Sister Used To Play This Game Forever And I Never Really Bothered With It. The Film Was Ok To My Standards. But Someone Who Likes The Games Would No Doubt Like The Film More Than Me.
In the year 2065, the next great assault against an invading race of phantom-like aliens is about to be launched. Dr. Aki Ross, a brilliant female scientist races to find the invaders secrets, not only to save the planet but also herself after her body is infected by alien particles. Excelent GC graphics and ground breaking FX in this movie a Sifi must.
I dont know anything about the games, so entered this without any expectations. The basic theme of good v. evil takes on another dimesion when then spirit of the earth (gaya) and the spirit of an alien planet come to fight for survival. The storyline is exquisite, and posed the confrontation between the need to destroy something we dont dare to investigate and the intuitive strength by the two main characters following the power of life. The story can be viewed from many different layers of perspective, and even if just seen as a SIFI entertainment, it scores well with amazing visual effects and realistic animation. Definitely one to watch again and again. Just let yourself be seduced...
The film is amazing in quality, picture and sound with amazing soundtrack and CG graphics, it is a film for an film fans collection. Although that being said it has nothing to do with the original FF series, there may be links I may of missed that the more informed fan may notice but to the untrained eye it is just The Spirits Within, Final Fantasy feels like a tag just added to increase it's populairty which feels uneeded. It holds itself as a great film and is a must see with excelent extras and sound track.
As a big fan of Square Enix productions as a general rule, I was both happy and disappointed with this effort at big-screen success. Fans of the Final Fantasy franchise were divided over the direction the film should go, action-based or storyline-orientated.
In the end, the action is very 'realistic', without having superhuman abilities you expect from a hero in these fantasy tales they still combat an evil with inhuman capabilities.
It was always going to be a tough task to condense what is usual an epic storyline into 102mins of film, and there is a lot of retrospective narrating to compensate for that. There are over 4 hours of extras on the special edition DVD which is well-worth investing in.
The core strength of Final Fantasy though is in its ability to make you emotive towards the characters, and develop a feeling of empathy with their situation. Few films manage to add a role-play element because there is no choice to be made on behalf of the viewer, but the feeling that you are a part of what is happening is important for 'the journey'.
Not a film to watch for quick thrills, but if you want to enjoy something magical.
A very cool movie! The graphics look awesome especially on a large widescreen TV. You might think you'll watch the graphics rather than the movie, but they do enhance it. I know nothing about Final Fantasy, but that took nothing away from the story line. If you like Sci-Fi movies, then this for you!
GREAT FILM...GREAT EFFECTS. THIS IS TRUELY A GROUND BREAKINF FILM AS IT IS ALL COMPUTER GENERATED. THE STORY NEVER WANDERS AND YOU DONT FEEL LIKE YOU ARE WANTING MORE.
Final Fantasy great series on PS1 and 2 and then they made the film!! Well the graphics are Fantastic and some of the actors for the voices are great i.e. James Woods (Always a good bad guy) The Film just did not live up to the Games but saying that I still enjoyed this film. I would recommend if you like the games then I would watch before you buy - I would checkout Final Fantasy Advent Children which is a must buy
I had seen the other films before this one so wanted to start from the begining again. All the films are great and this is one of the best a must see film
This is a quality film! Unbelievable visuals which really showed off our Sony Bravia LCD T.V, more than episode 3 and the lord of the rings films! The film has an excellent story and a must for all sci-fi fans!!
I have always enjoyed this film and was happy to find it at such a cheap price on dvd! The case of the dvd was in perfect condition and was still shrink wrapped!
i loved the movie it is amazing how they make the film i would give it a 10/10 rating the dvd that i had was a bad copy that was sold as new but other than that its a good movie thanks steven.
I bought this to add to my small collection of Sci-Fi films. In its day the quality of the CGI was utterly astounding, groundbreaking stuff, and it still stands good today. But this film has much more - not only is it well constructed around an interesting science-fiction premise, but it has good solid characters and a cracking plot. The overall effect is a film that rushes along leaving you goggle-eyed and breathless in its wake. A true classic.
