madonnas early music funked up and mixed by some of the 80s top djs like john'jellybean'benitez and mark kamins(the dj who played her record in his club and got her seen)if you love holiday youll love this as it features numerous times on this cd in various mixes.it also features the lesser heard spotlight!!
My wife had this cd many moons ago. It used to drive me mad listening to it. It got damaged in our recent move and after never ending nagging I finally caved in and bought her another one. I don't mind some Madonna tunes and one good thing is the way the tracks are mixed in together.
This is bascially a non-stop dance album containing 12" mixes of singles from Madonna's first three albums with one new track "Spotlight" debuted. This album was released sandwiched between the average "Who's That Girl" soundtrack and the awesome "Like A Prayer", so it's release was somewhat overshadowed in terms of Madonna albums. Despite being the only Madonna album not to reach the Top 3, it still sold well (on the back of her tour that year) and encouraged other artists of the time to issue similar concept albums.
The choice of tracks are somewhat confusing. There are two big classics - "Holiday" and "Into The Groove" both slightly mixed and then moulded into their following tracks; but no "Like A Virgin" and no singles from the "True Blue" album. Some other album tracks feature instead - "Over and Over" and "Where's The Party", and disappointingly "Physical Attraction" was included. This isn't the best track, and it doesn't sound any different from the original on the "Madonna" album. The rest of the CD space is spent on "Dub Versions" of the tracks we've already heard. Surely something more exciting could've been added on? What was more confusing at the time is that you had different versions depending on what format you bought!
Although the tracks are typical bubble-gum pop of 1980s Madonna, the impression is that this album was hastily put together and issued to cash-in on Madonna's huge popularity given she was touring the world in 1987. Even the new track "Spotlight" sounds like it was left-over from another project. The cover sleeve is somewhat plain (this could be due to the decade in which it was issued, however) with an essay written inside about Madonna and Dancing. I'd recommend this to fans, Madonna collectors and anyone who loves '80s dance music otherwise you're not missing much.
