was not a big fan of Jonny Cash's music before seeing this film, and it really does not matter if you were a fan or not the film is simply brilliant. At it's core this is a story of Cash's difficult childhood and his long running love for his backing singer June Carter. The acting by the two principal actors, Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon is of the highest order and it was not until after watching the film that I found out they both sang thier parts. Neither stray into pastiche impersonations, which would have been an easy trap with a well known character like Cash. For me this was even better than "Ray" (and I was a big fan of Ray Charles), which has many parallels in the story. Deserves the accolades it has received, see it you will love it.
Well some people may still think that Johnny Cash is change from a durex machine! but there is no doubt whatever you thought of the late legend it is another brilliant film by the "undernoted" and Highly talented Joaquin Pheonix, let alone the multi talented Reece Witherspoon. The Accolades and Awards have been given by Film critic's etc. far more talented than I, for the obvious reasons, Miss it at your peril!
I first saw this movie on TV and liked it so much I bought the DVD. The performances by Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon are outstanding and very believable. Anyone that is a fan of Johnny Cash will love this movie.
this is a top film, i saw it on tv and just wanted to watch it over and over !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
An emotional story of his life, i felt it was told well. Sometimes a little slow. A good selection of songs. I would watch it again, and have sent it to my dad. Worth watching, even if you are not a Cash fan.
An enjoyable film that ultimately falls between two stools. About half of the running time is sound track of Joachim Phoenix performing as Johnny Cash and singing his early music. He gives a sterling performance but he is NOT Cash. If you would prefer to listen to the REAL Johnny Cash one wonders why the director did not choose to dub original Cash vocals to Joachim Phoenix's strong performance. The remainder of the film deals with Cash's struggle against drug dependency. Unfortunately most of the film's energy is invested in trying to generate acceptable vocals and the script lacks taut direction. It meanders wearily like the Mississippi towards the film's premature conclusion. The last 30 years of Cash's life and marriage are merely mentioned in passing. It is a Chinese meal of a film. Enjoyable at the time, but ultimately leaving one unsatisfied and wanting more.
Johnny grew up poor on a cotton farm, listening to June Carter and her family sing on the radio. He married a girl from home and started singing, but his wife was jealous of Johnny's career and his time away from home. He met Jane and was smitten, but they were both married; they continued to tour together for years, through June's second marriage and Johnny's terrible drug abuse. June helped him kick his habit and later, Johnny proposed to her on stage.
I really enjoyed the songs in the movie a lot; I was especially impressed that Phoenix and Witherspoon did their own singing and playing and made it look so easy.
"Walk the Line" is an entertaining bio pic with infectious music and two very likeable stars.
This is one of the best and well made films i've ever seen (and i've watched a fair few) The acting was amazing they casted each role perfectly, and the attention to detail was incredible. It such a great story Told Perfectly, i can not fault this movie at all, Its a must see if your a fan of Jonny Cash or not, It gives you a real glimps into his life and left no stone unturned, It was just the right lengh for a film, it was happy/sad it made me laugh and cry, and really made me feel for them, Which is what every good movie should do. It left you wanting more. A definate 5/5 from me :)
Sat and watched this film at the request of my 15 year old son who is a fan of Mr Cash. Didn't really want to see it but am so glad I did. It was so very good and I didn't want it to end. The actors/actresses and the acting is great and I had no idea about Cash's life and times and of those around him. Found it quite sad in places and don't know how true to life it really is, but definately worth buying, am so glad I did and will watch it again. I would say, if in doubt, go for it and buy it, am sure you too won't be disappointed.
Wow what a really moving passionate film, jaquin pheonix was made for this role and reece witherspoon is amazing as june, the one great love of jonnys life, you dont have to be a country fan to love this film, as in my opinion it is more of a story of true love, but not slushy, so you boys would even love it,the music is obviously a big part of it too and i challenge anyone to say they havn,t heard of at least one of jonnys hits as he has now got quite a cult following, great one to add to your dvd collection.
You don't have to be a fan of Country Music, or even a fan of Johnny Cash to enjoy this gripping film, from his Childhood to his famous Gig at Folsom Prison, by the way, did you know that Johnny Cash had been playing at Prisons since the late 1950's? This film is fantastic from the start to the end, and they couldn't of choose anyone better than Reese Witherspoon to portray June Carter-Cash or Joaquin Phoenix to portray Johnny. It really is worth watching, even if you just rent the DVD.
Brilliant actors, Joaquin Phoenix in Bestform and such a good singer as hee proofed !!! If you like Stories, based on true facts, this kind of Music and a Drama without Gunshoots - it's a perfect film to watch! Got it for my Partner as he loves this kind of Music and he was touched...
I loved this film!! I am not even a fan of Johnny Cash - a bit before my time. The acting was good, the songs were brilliant it was an overall excellend film. I wanted to watch after seeing a late night documentary on him but never got round to going to the pictures so i rented it out on DVD when it came out. I cant say it enough, i really enjoyed it. I would highly recomend it.
It seemed to me The Man in Black was really a tortured Soul? & most of his earlier Music reflected that opinion J.R Cash really wore his heart on his sleeve & had many loves from his Deceased big bro Jack, his Hit & Miss parenting & moral upbringing,& of course his musical release,& his month of June.
The film is a warts & all reflection of all his hopes & fears, & very well acted by all & sundry, as both Witherspoon & Phoenix had a good on screen presence together, & Robert Patrick was well cast as Mr Cash (Well could you Imagine Nick Cage In his role, no neither can I).
Well I am a little biased now as I`m a real Country Bhoy & avid Big Bad Johnny Cash fan, since birth, as my pop was always singing his songs or playing his records as I grew up, but still a grand film though.
My Dad has always raved about Johnny Cash and his music, so when the film came out about his life story and music I thought I would see what all the fuss was about. I throughourly enjoyed the film and music - but dont tell my rock friends. The characters were played really well. I even tapped my foot!
Johnny Cash is one of the few musical artists who could genuinely call himself a legend, although he was too humble to do so. He is the only artist to have ever been inducted into both the Rock n' Roll hall of fame as well as the Country Music one and his musical catalogue stands the test of time. His story was fascinating, not because he was the perfect person but because he was flawed. He battled his demons, alcohol and drugs took their toll on him over the years and he was trapped in a marriage that his religion told him he couldn't leave. This film tells at least part of the story, during his early years in the business and whilst he was getting his first tastes of fame and all that entailed. Someone once told me that the reason that you felt compelled to listen when Johnny Cash sang was because you just knew that this was a man who fought every demon that you could imagine and beat every one.
I am a Johnny Cash fan and I thoroughly enjoyed this film when I watched it at the cinema. I don't normally buy DVD's however felt I would like to watch this film time and time again at my convenience. I therefore decided to check it out on Ebay.
I went to see this film at the cinema and enjoyed it so much that I was delightedto have a copy to myself. Buying it on e-bay saved me quite a bit as it was a new and sealed copy. I have two daughters who have also watched the film eleventy-twelve times since I bought it. I particularly like Johny Cash and this film went through his life story from the beginning when he was a child to the time when he finally married his lifetime partner June Carter. It shows all the bad times including his drug addiction and reliance on alcohol and the way he crawled back to the top. It has something for everyone and of course is a great romance as well.
Biopic of the formative years of Country singer Johnny Cash's childhood, struggle with addiction and fame, and eventual redemption through his future 2nd wife and love of his life June Carter (an Oscar-Winning Reese Witherspoon).
Joaquin Pheonix does an excellent job managing to both look and sound like Cash, while the array of songs remind you just how strong an artiste Cash was, and this film doesnt feature the majority of his standards. Whilst not the best biographical film i've ever seen it is certainly an accomplished and polished effort. A very good film that everyone can enjoy, whether you like his music or not.
