Gripping courtroom drama, LUMET AT HIS BEST

I cannot tell you how many times i have watched this film,I know most of the dialogue and still i return for more.

There cannot be many films of any era where every actor featured is simply born to play the role in the film. The acting is approaching perfection even a very young Jack Clugmann (of Quincy fame)whose role is crucial to the end verdict plays everything to perfection.

For those who are confused and want to know what the film is all about it is filmed in only three locations

1-The Court Room
2-The Jury Room
3-Outside the court at the very end.

An open and shut case a young teenager suposedly stabbed his father out of anger living in a slum neighbourhood.
Every jury member bar Henry Fonda want to send the lad to the chair, but Fonda wants them to look at the facts once again
COULD THEY BE WRONG with their verdict.

Sidney Lumet captures the suspense of the hottest day of the year in a stuffy upstairs room perfectly.Fondas quiet brilliance of winning even the most predujiced jury member over to a unanumous NOT GUILTY must rank as one of the greatest moments in film history.

By now you must have guessed this is in my top three favorite films of all time, once you have seen it you may come to the same opinion.

The only disappointment in this amazing film are the lack of extras on this disc, either there were none to be had or cast members were unwilling to spare their time, anyway this is one film everyone must see before they die.

A Film Classic, In Every Sense.

This has got to be the best ever use of film to portray drama, and a remarkable study in fine acting and script. The film is shot pretty much all in one room, with just a few brief scenes in the adjacent bathroom, and on the steps of the courtroom afterwards. In this one room sit twelve men, a jury, their task to decide the fate of a young man accused of murdering his father. You do not see the trial, or any flashbacks to what has happened previously to them entering the room, however from the opening you are quickly convinced by the jury that it is an open and shut case, the jury that is with one exception.
Henry Fonda gives possibly his finest performance as the lone man, not entirely convinced by the evidence. You can almost feel the heat and smell the sweat as over the course of what follows, as one by one others reconsider what they have been told, and the prejudices they find they have bought with them.
There is no down side to this film, in every sense it takes you on a journey without actually going anywhere. No big special effects, but a masterclass in acting and script, and a must for any film collection.

  great, interesting movie
Review created: 02/10/08

there are 12 characters, who are all members of the jury. and its upon them to decide the criminal charge of a boy.
the movie itself mostly happens inside a room, all 12 of the men s stories are believable and that's what makes it interesting. the characters in the movie are well shown.

a classic.

  One of the Best!

This is a brilliant DVD - although it's in black and white and mainly set in one room (the Juror's room) your attention is grabbed from the start. It is a very clever film exposing the weaknesses of human nature and how prejudice, apathy, anger, personal grievance etc etc can affect our judgements of other people.

First class filming, first class editing, first class story, first class acting. Henry Fonda is on top form.

  12 Angry Men
Review created: 23/02/08

What is there to say about this classic that hasn't been said before? Henry Fonda is the lone doubter in a jury convinced that the accused boy before them is guilty of his father's murder and should be sent to die. The film follows the course of their deliberations as one by one the others come round to Fonda's way of thinking. A brilliant example of how to deal with ignorance and bigotry.

  One of the best...
Review created: 30/01/08

12 Angry Men (1957) is the gripping, penetrating, and engrossing examination of a diverse group of twelve jurors (all male, mostly middle-aged, white, and generally of middle-class status) who are uncomfortably brought together to deliberate after hearing the 'facts' in a seemingly open-and-shut murder trial case. They retire to a jury room to do their civic duty and serve up a just verdict for the indigent minority defendant (with a criminal record) whose life is in the balance. The film is a powerful indictment, denouncement and expose of the trial by jury system. The frightened, teenaged defendant is on trial, as well as the jury and the American judicial system with its purported sense of infallibility, fairness and lack of bias. Alternatively, the film could also be viewed as commentary on McCarthyism, Fascism, or Communism (threatening forces in the 50s). One of the film's posters described how the workings of the judicial process can be disastrous: "LIFE IS IN THEIR HANDS - DEATH IS ON THEIR MINDS! It EXPLODES Like 12 Sticks of Dynamite."

i had heard this film was a classic and i saw it on a rented version and i was glued to the screen so i just had to get my own copy. i loved the way that the jury turned round from 11-1 guilty to 12 against guilty. it was riveting. glad i bought it.
