The A100's keyboard is a bit spongy and the keys offer long travel. I personally prefer a stiff keyboard that does not flex when I hammer on it. I did not find that it slowed me down at all, but if you are picky about keyboards you might like to try the A100 out in a store beforehand.
Nothing is perfect, and the A100 does have a couple of areas that could be improved. I think the battery should be a 9-cell unit. Not being able to complete an average length DVD on a single battery charge is a bummer. I also think the keyboard could be stiffer, but that is coming from a confessed keyboard snob.
I bought my Toshiba A100-451 from Comet seven months ago (May 2007)for £850. It is incredibly fast and does not seem to loose any speed when backing up files, scanning for viruses or defragging etc. I like the keyboard and the screen is nice and bright. Excellent WiFi connection, lots of USB sockets. It was the best value laptop that I could find on the Internet and local shops at the time and still compares well to machines being advertised now. I have seen criticism of the graphics card which, in my view, does everything I need of it (I am not a games player). I use it for work and photo/video editing and I could not ask for anything better. Maybe I'm easy to please - I have grown to like Windows Vista as well which is better than XP.
I bought this laptop because I thought it could provide me with very good performance because of the powerful cpu, the large amount of memory and the good graphic card. I was not particularly interested in extra features like webcam or bluetooth. However, only after opening the box and doing benchmarks I discovered that the laptop comes with an nvidia Geforce 7600 with a bus width of 64bit (instead of usual 128bit for this graphic card). This information is not clearly advertised, neither by the manufacturer nor by the retailers, but, as a matter of fact, greatly affects the performance of the laptop. Benchmarks: 3DMark05=1800-2000; PCMark05=4250. The build quality is not very good, as well. The laptop has a large fan hole on the base that is easily obstructed when the computer is kept on the lap (!). The plastic chassis looks cheap and the lcd cover panel bends to the slightest pressure. It lacks camera and bluetooth. I returned the product, with only partial refund.
