I BOUGHT THIS DVD BECAUSE I THOUGHT MY DAUGHTER WOULD ENJOY THE DARK HUMOUR.HAVING WATCHED THIS A FEW YEARS AGO I REMEMBER ENJOYING THE RELATIONSHIPS NICOLE KIDMANS CHARACTER HAS WITH THOSE AROUND HER AS SHE BECOMES INCREASINGLY SINGLE MINDED IN THE PURSUIT OF "SUCCESS". BOTH KIDMAN AND HER CO-STAR MATT DILLON GIVE GOOD PERFORMANCES,HOWEVER THE FILM DOESNT QUITE LIVE UP TO ITS ORIGINAL MEMORY.STILL WORTH WATCHING THOUGH.
The movie tells a story about an overambitious lady without inner limits. She represents the socially successful white all-american lady and she wants to reach her goals as a media bimbo by all means. But then her career takes a fatal turn and everything goes terriby wrong. I would also say that the director Gus van Sant with this movie seems like he wants to portray particular parts of white america with an ironic and critical touch: People who like to show a perfect shiny successful facade, but behind the scene it's not that perfect. Nicole Kidman does baybe her best acting performace in this movie. Charismatic and extremely beutiful she fills the character role with perfect skill. The ironic touch in the film is also adding to the entertainment of the movie.
Nicole Kidman is superb as Suzanne Marretto, the small time Cable station employee who wants to make it big. A fascinating story of manipulation and utimately, murder. Joaquin Phoenix as Jimmy Emmett, is simply brilliant as the teenage boy who falls for Suzanne Marretto and will do 'anything' for her in return for sexual favours. A great supporting cast, Matt Dillon, Casey Affleck and Alison Folland. A must see.
