There is no doubt that this film is a truly great piece of film-making. Shane Meadows crafts films in the same style as Martin Scorcese. We are given a glimpse into the lifestyle of a group of characters over a short period of time. It is very much a fly on the wall type of movie. The point of these films is to understand the actions of the characters rather than judging their actions. I have no doubt that there will be some people that tag this film as being racist which is rather missing the point.
The film follows Shaun a 12 year old being borough up in early 80's England. He has lost his father in the Falklands war and suffers bullying and isolation until he is befriended by a group of skinheads. The happy band are challenged when Combo is released from prison. Thomas Turgoose is magnificent in the lead role and the direction/screenplay are also spot on the mark. For anybody that lived through the period there are lots of reminders about the period. The film is based on Meadow's own childhood and is quite mesmerising at times.
I was gripped throughout the film and it also gave me plenty to think about afterwards. What more can you ask for when going to the movies? I suppose if you go to the movies for escapism then go watch something else, but if you want a gripping thought provoking drama then it doesn't come much better than this. Outstanding!

A story of racism full of shocking events!

The films is about Shawn,an 11 year old Boy who just wants to fit in.
He meets with some lads who take care of him and show him a good time.

After 3 1/2 years one of the racist friends of one of the lads is released from Jail and soon tries to turn them into racist thugs

A amazing film that all should see!

this is a good film for bringing back memories of the 80s. the acting of some of the cast i did not thinck was very good but the film was a good watch. the sound track was great a real mix of classics. i think what made it a good film is it is modern history which is not portrayed very much from the avarage persons point of view very often. it was very hard hitting in some places and very down to earth. a good film for people interested in the skin head movement or just the 80s in general. over all a film worth watching it will be staying in my collection and i will watch it again.

This country's finest young(ish) film maker tackles the skinhead movement of Thatchers Britain during the times of the Falklands War. Fine performances particularly by Thomas Turgoose and an excellent soundtrack as always from Meadows. The best British film of 2007.

This is England is a Tour de Force

This actually warrants that tired adage Tour de Force. Meadows has made something really special here. All the performances are exceptional especially that of Stephen Graham in the role of Combo. I was riveted, I let my tea go cold! The depth and complexity of the characters was exceptional, no simple black and white here, many shades of grey. A must see movie.

Review created: 30/01/08

An accurate picture of life set in a working class ara of England in the early eighties. The story demonstrates the turbulence of the time and the widening class divide of England under a right wing Tory government. Skinheads are shown in a light of being a group of youngsters searching for an identity and not essentially the violent group that they are usually labelled as. The National Front are shown attempting to subvert the nationalistic feeling that had infected the working classes following the Falklands conflict.
All in all a tremendous cameo of the times.

After hearing a great deal of good reviews about this film, i finally got round to watching it and have to say, I was somewhat disappointed. Though the charming "80's English" stance the film takes is something that I warmed to, I felt the issues the film raised regarding race and cultural conflicts was delivered in a manner that made me feel guilty for being English. Although it confronted the issues face on, in a gritty, hard-hitting manner- it was inconclusive and I left wanting to see an the impact of the aftermath.

I thought it was fairly slow paced and it ended in an anti-climax that left me confused and full of questions. However, the performances from Stephen Graham and Thomas Turgoose are highly commendable were the main factor that kept me watching. Perhaps i look back on this era too fondly with rose tinted glasses. This film is definately worth a watch but I'm still in mixed minds about how i feel about it!

After all the hype I was really looking forward to this film. Sadly it failed to live up to iots billing. Don't get me wrong, it's not a BAD film.....it's just not the great British film I had hoped for, and been led to believe it would be.
Good individual performance by the young lad on his film debut, but the storyline was weak and predictable, repetitive and, ultimatley, just plain boring.

"we bring him in wi' us to show him a bloody good time"
Review created: 23/11/07
by:

This is England is a perfect mix of absurd TV and catastrophes, what a weird and unpleasant land Britain was in the early 1980s. Shots of unemployed miners, National Front marches, and the royal wedding are cut to perfection over a vintage track by Toots and the Maytals "54-46 was my number."

This is the England, starring that 12-year-old Shaun (played by Thomas Turgoose) came into the world of 1983, the year of Bjorn Borg's Retirement of tennis, o how we all remember that. He is a surly misfit on a northern council estate. His father has returned from the Falklands in a body bag. His grieving mother has neither the confidence nor cash to fill the awful void. Shaun is bullied at school for his second-hand clothes. The boy aches for some control. He aches for people to talk.

This neediness results in deep trouble when a gang of local skinheads whose loyalties are later poisoned by a racist nutter adopts him. What makes the film such compelling drama is how familiar the landscape is almost 25 years on. Britain is stuck in another war; Gun crime is on the increase. Nerds have discovered the iPod and the Nintendo DS. The Iranians are back in the bad books.

I don’t think that Meadows set out to shoot a state-of-the-nation parable. He set out to explore a disagreement within skinhead culture: the tribal dislike of foreigners!

Yet it’s clear that This is England is much bigger than this irony. The script is torn directly from Meadow’s own experience of growing up on a council estate in Uttoxeter. Like Shaun, his social life was transformed by shaving his hair off. In the film, the genial leader of the local gang, Woody (Joe Gilgun), is amused by the boy’s gloomy wit and moved by his anguish. Shaun is adopted by this motley crew and is empowered by his new uniform and older friends. Even his mother is impressed.

The gang are civil if not exactly adorable. They smash up empty council houses for fun, and get stoned while listening to records.

Few directors have tapped into their damaged past as brilliantly as Meadows. This is England is by far his most personal and powerful testimony that I have seen in a film since I have become interested in the film area!

Fellow Midlander Shane Meadows has produced not only his finest work to date but one of the very best films to come out of Britain that I have ever had the pleasure of viewing. Just as the effectively chilling, bloody (yet arguably flawed) "Dead Man's Shoes" showcased a passionate return to low budget, focused film making, "This Is England" sees him perfect his technique. It is a seemingly effortless achievement that matches a warm, humorous portrayal of a young lad growing up with his experience of the cold brutality that came with the 80s skinhead culture. The way in which Shane blends these two aspects together without compromising on either is most impressive.

Delivering a surprising, enchanting performance in the lead role as Shaun, Thomas Turgoose portrays a youngster of incredible warmth and charisma. He is befriended by a relatively harmless gang skirting with the skinhead culture rife at the time. His strength of character in the face of the adversity life throws his way is truly unforgettable, a credit to both Shane as the writer and Thomas as the performer. As Shaun discovers the joy of "belonging" in the gang, the viewer takes a similar journey. Through sublime use of another excellent soundtrack (an ear for music in relation to visuals is one of Shane's most loved and respected trademarks) the joy of youth and life literally springs from the screen.

What is particularly successful is Shane's restraint where it comes to grounding the film in reality. It would have been all too easy to escalate these events above and beyond the core group of characters, creating a power struggle on a much bigger, thrill friendly scale. Instead the film remains focused and convincing, not once do you doubt the likelihood of events. The canvas may be smaller but emotionally "This Is England" resonates more powerfully than ever before, taking the harsh, greys of a story like "Dead Man's Shoes" and enlightening it with a central character full of warmth and honesty. In the end this serves to engage the viewer on a much greater level.

It is in comedy that "This Is England" truly surprises, not the usual splash of dark humour but humour of much broader appeal. Thomas' performance brings the sharp dialogue to life with a wonderful physical range, the first half the film is crammed with delightful comic moments that really draw you in to the character, making future events all the more affecting. Much is made of Shaun's romance with a much older girl, the scenes are tear-jerking in their tender, wonderfully observed realism. There is much in the film that will trigger moments of recognition in the viewer, especially (but not exclusively) those who were young in the 80s.

As big time skinhead Combo (the other stand out performance of the piece from Scouser Stephen Graham) comes out of jail the film takes a U-Turn, presenting a troubling, unrestrained view on racism through extreme nationalism, getting deep under the skin to question the source and nature of such hatred. It is in this that we realise this is a study of human nature as Shaun is presented with more extreme acts that drive him to question the moral behind such irrational prejudices.

Book ending the film is real news footage of the political climate surrounding the events depicted, prominent among which is Maggie Thatcher's invasion of the Falklands (a conflict that's consequences prove key to the central narrative) When asked "Will we ever talk to the Argentines again?"
