One of 1987's monster hits at the box office, Brian DePalma's film version of the classic television series stars Kevin Costner, in an early leading role, Robert De Niro in one of his early cameo roles, and Sean Connery in one of his first "mentor to the young kid" roles.

The movie is slick Hollywood entertainment all the way. Big, bloody and full of witty one-liners (courtesy of David Mamet), The Untouchables moves like a bat out of hell, going from set piece to set piece, almost never pausing to let the viewer catch their breath.

As released on DVD by Paramount, the disc boasts a beautiful anamorphic transfer, yet loses a great many points because of a fairly uninvolving 5.1 mix. In a familiar refrain, it goes without saying that the release comes almost totally devoid of any special features. Pity.

It is the 1920s and Prohibition is the law of the land. It is the time of Al Capone (Robert De Niro), the king of Chicago. Yet a new face has come to Windy City—an earnest, family man sent by the Treasury Department to bring down Capone's reign of violence and intimidation. Eliot Ness (Kevin Costner) is his name, and together with his small group of agents, nicknamed the Untouchables, they will attempt the unthinkable: find a way to stop Capone, or die trying.

WHAT AN EXCELLENT FILM. TRULY A MASTERPIECE. WITH AN ALL-STAR CAST, IT'S HARD TO NAME ANY ONE ACTOR THAT SHINES BRIGHTER THAN THE OTHER. (DENIRO, CONNERY, COSTNER, GARCIA - TO NAME BUT A FEW.) DENIRO WAS PERFECTLY CAST FOR THE ROLE OF 'CAPONE'. GANGSTERS, PROHIBITION, NEW YORK, IRISH & ITALIAN, WHAT MORE DO YOU NEED? HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

  Entertaining But Not Engrossing

I remember watching this in my youth and really liking it, so when faced with which films to buy as part of a 3 for £15 deal, the Untouchables just made the cut.
I was surprised how vividly I had remembered the film, having probably not watched it for 15 years. Sadly, however, it was just not as enjoyable as I found it to be in my teens. The action set peices are entertaining, especially the train station steps sequence, but don't ever lift the movie above average. All those years ago the violence on offer here seemed quite brutal, but it just doesn't have the power to shock anymore.
I'd let the Untouchables off from many of it's flaws if not for one thing- the terrible performance from Sean Connery. It's not one of Robert De Niro's best performances whilst Kevin Costner is a little wooden, but Connery is awful, and his irish accent laughable.
I'm not saying that this isn't worth watching, but I'd recomend watching it on TV or renting before buying.
(since reviewing the Untouchables I discovered, to my surprise, that Sean Connery won the best supporting Oscar for this film, that doesn't change my opinion of him one bit though)
