I am what you could call a relatively new movie fan. I have always liked movies, but I didn´t use to watch too many of them. Things have changed, but due to that previous attitude, I still have a lot of old movies to “discover”. That is the reason why from time to time I find some jewels that were released a long time ago, but that are totally new to me. “The untouchables” (1987) is, of course, one of such movies.
This film is set in Chicago, during the prohibition, a time were mobsters had enormously increased their influence due to the contraband of alcohol. The most important of all mobsters was Al Capone (wonderfully played by Robert De Niro), whose influence was pervasive and somehow accepted by most as a fact of reality. Capone controlled Chicago with force and bribes, and a philosophy that the scriptwriter of this movie (David Mamet) summed up in a phrase that the actor that plays Capone said: “Somebody messes with me, I'm gonna mess with him”.

Things change when a newcomer to the city, Federal agent Elliot Ness, forms a small group to fight crime and target Capone´s shady dealings. The group formed by Ness, an old Chicago cop (Sean Connery), a rookie police officer (Andy Garcia) and an accountant (Charles Martin Smith), replays in a highly entertaining way Brian de Palma´s cinematographic version of “The untouchables”.

I should point out that you shouldn´t expect a movie that tells you the historical truth about that period in America´s history. If that is your purpose, you are likely to be sorely disappointed. However, if you want to watch a great film, with wonderful performances and marked by a dynamic pace, rent this movie :)

  Classic gangster film

One of my favourite gangster movies with an incredible cast featuring Costner, Connery and De niro at his mercurial best. It is the story of Al capone and his rise to an illicit fortune during the years of prohibition with Elliot Ness and his team of untouchables put together to try and stop him

This film has stood the test of time (20 years) so well. Costner was at his peak and the whole cast around him are superb. Knowing that there is an element of truth in the story also adds to the scenario.

There are great scenes of action, suspense and comedy. It moves at a ripping pace so there's never a chance of boredom.

It's what all films should be - watchable and enjoyable. Go for it!!

  PART-OF-A-TEAM.

Elliott Ness (Costner) recruits an elite band of 'untouchable' federal officers to take down the city-wide empire, built on-top of prohibition by the notorious Al Capone.

As a fellow reviewer points out, don't watch this film expecting the set-in-stone story of Al Capone and the history of gangland Chicago during prohibition; Director Brian De Palma makes good use of the artistic license here.
This movie is a classic boys-own action comic in film form. Ness and his trusted band work through the Capone empire - from stopping shippments of illegal drink and cutting off the supplies, to tracking down the bookkeeper - all to bring Capone down!
Solid performances from Andy Garcia, Sean Connery and Kevin Costner, but still plenty of guns and blood to stop it from being a film about "social comment". Well worth the shelf-space in anyone's DVD collection.

I have always liked this film, counting it as one of my all time favourites. I already have a video copy but wanted a copy on DVD (to move with the times). Sean Connery'r performance is memorable.

"Can a movie combine iconic stars & a legendary tale?"
Review created: 29/09/06

I'm a fan of bloke films, particuarly brit flicks. I also love Gangster films like Goodfellas & Casino, so I had to see The Untouchables as it has such legendary status and is known as "a must see"

A must see if there is nothing on your SKY+

A few good one liners, a little humour, Sean Connery as an Irish has-been cop and Kevin "wooden personality" Costner. Even Robert De Niro had little to say or do.

There is no character development and you will have no attachment or care for any of them.

However watch for yourself to see a few well known scenes, especially the pram-at-stairs scenes which was perfectly spoofed in a Naked Gun film.

Make your own mind up... it goes cheap enough on e-bay!
