Nominated for 7 Academy Awards, Terrence Malick's The Thin Red Line, is not your average, `shoot em up' Hollywood War Film. Set in the Pacific during world war 2 it follows a platoon of American Infantrymen, studded with Star names, George Clooney, Sean Penn, Nick Nolte and Woody Harrelson to mention a few. It is a very realistic view of war. Slightly hard going at first, once it gets going, it will definitely make you watch to the end. Not a film to dip in and out of, It is a Dark Night, Low lights and Surround sound film that will leave you in no doubt as to its message.
Quite simply my favourite film of all time. I've watched it over and over again. The cinematography is unbelievable and you really get an obvious flavour of Malik's experience as a wildlife documentary maker. My most memorable piece of cinematography is the changing of the light from cloud movements as a precursor to the assault on the hill (worth looking out for). The acting is superb and the film flows beautifully
I'm writing this review more as a warning to anyone expecting another Saving Private Ryan or something along those lines. It's not, so if tha's what your after don't bother with this.
Firstly I would like to say that if you are looking for an all out war movie packed with action from start to finish then this is not for you.
If you are looking for a near 3 hour visually stunning, excellently acted masterpeice then this is the film for you.
You will have to wait nearly an hour before any weapon is fired but this film is more about the individual in the war and there are an awful lot of individuals in this movie. Some big names include John Cuscak, Sean Penn, Adrian Brody, Jim Caviezal, Nick Nolte, John Travolta, Jared Leto, Woody Harrelson. . . .and the list goes on. George Clooney appears at the end for all of 30 seconds so if you are buying it for his performance then you may want to reconsider.
The movie is very arty and throughout the film it has a talk over which again is very arty and poetic. Many people see this as a negative aspect but i see it as stunning to watch.
Overall this film is impecably acted, impecably shot and well worth a watch. But as said before, be prepared for an awful lot of talking and character building.
i bought it because my friend said it was good. The first bit of the film is a bit boring but after and during the hill battle it gets really good. I usually skip the first bit until the battle and then watch it from there.
