Love it all. John Cusack is a great actor, the humer is fabulous. Saw the film years ago and bought it so my teenage kids could watch. They loved it too. Highly highly highly recommended
I first saw this film several years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. Its fun, witty and also carries a message about how we interact with others. If you like films with meaning and also have a slight edge to your sense of humour this is for you!
This is one of the great eighties teen comedies, with early star turns from the likes of Nicolette Sheridan, Tim Robbins, Anthony Edwards and John Cusack in his first starring role.
A road trip across country at the end of the college semester brings a slobbish, carefree guy and a prim scholarly beauty together for a couple of days of adventures and misadventures; he's on his way to a friend's in California to meet "the sure thing" of the title, she's returning to her boyfriend's, a guy more uptight than she is. As they go along they realise they're less and less interested in where they're going, only who they're with now...
Very funny, great performances, great script, one of the best yet most underrated teen comedies of the eighties...if you've never seen it, do it!
Love stories are always difficult especially teen comedy ones in the 1980s. They were usually more concerned with sex than love itself, and although this film might sound like it's about a guy getting laid, it's actually about him falling in love.
The story starts off with Gib (John Cusack) in his first year of college while his best friend from high school, Lance (Anthony Edwards) is partying it up in sunny California. Gib is already a disaster with the ladies on campus and to make matters worse, Lance is seemingly getting action everyday. Then Gib walks into his English class and notices Alison (Daphne Zuniga) and asks for her help with his studying. Later, Gib and Alison end up in the same car pool to California. She is going to see her boyfriend and he is going to meet "The Sure Thing" (Nicolette Sheridan). Of course along the way, Alison and Gib find they have a mutual admiration for each other and it is only up to the viewer to guess the outcome. Shouldn't be too difficult.
This might sound like predictable rubbish, but the writing gives Alison and Gib plenty to do and they have much funny dialogue to go with it. The acting is superb and this was directed by Rob Reiner. Enough said. It is honest in it's humour and fair with it's balance of love and lust. The Sure Thing not only doesn't fail, it surpasses your expectations.
I first saw this film when it was originally released and really enjoyed it. It's funny and has good characters in the story. I have always enjoyed movies with John Cusack and this one does not disappoint. When I found out it had been released on DVD I have been trying to obtain a copy. Some people may comment that it's dated now but the story still holds true and it is well acted. After watching it again I'm glad to have obtained a copy on DVD to add to my collection.
