This is a well acted drama set at the beginning of the 20th Century - but not an idealised Merchant Ivory period piece - the plot has so many twists that for most viewers the ending may come as a surprise - think of "The Usual Suspects" to get a similar feel. All of the performances were realistic, Scarlett Johanson isn't merely a piece of totty in a corset, but a well rounded character. Michael Caine as always puts in a fine performance as the engineer, creating the illusions - David Bowie as Nikolai Tesla was a surprise but relevant inclusion; spoiler alert - watch closely the experiments he performs. From the outset clues are provided, with Caine providing a narrative which tells us all what is happening, but the viewer is carried along with the illusion and subplots until the end. This is a film that you have to watch twice - to ensure you pickup all the clues and wonder how you missed them the first time - or at least I did!!
A well plotted, intelligent film, great performances and potentially a cult classic.
The prestige directed by Chris Nolan (Batman begins, Dark Knight)pairs up again Christian Bale and Michael Caine along with Hugh Jackman. The film centres around the bitter rivalry of two showmen magicians as they try to com up with the ultimate magic trick the Prestige but is it really a trick? The film is well worth a watch and my only critiscism may be that the film seemed a little long. If you enjoy a film with secrets, twists and turns then this will be for you.
An interesting slow burn film with Bale and Jackman as magicians at loggerheads. This isnt high octane, more slow build, yet produces a suitable amount of tension throughout. The HD transfer is great to watch and performances are good. (never sure about Bale's accent in most things though and Jackman is certainly more natural than wooden as it appears he can be from certain snippets of his usual romantic coms. Must be the material he gets in them). A nice supporting performance of Batman ilk from Michael Caine. Decent film and glad purchased.
The Prestige on HD DVD. Great movie. Only available to US consumers on HD DVD via import from the UK. Since HD DVD was (R.I.P. HD-DVD) region free and most HDTVs can handle the difference in frames per second between Europe and the US. This HD-DVD should be playable by almost anyone with an HD-DVD player. If you like this movie, its essential you track this import down.
A very interesting film, seems to go on a bit, but gets you thinking. Just like it says on the cover The Prestige, you'll want to see it again. Watch Closely. Michael Caine is great in this and the other 2 actors Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale are really the best actors for the roles they play. I don't want to give it away the twists and story line are extremley good and I would recomend any one buy this fim.
