The final album Gabriel did with Genesis and if you call this his swan song with the band it certainly is a good one.
If your thinking of entering into the Gabriel era for the first time this is probably not the best starting point - there is alot going on within the confines of this double album, and for the newby listener there is alot to take in. I myself have had many many years of listening this album and once its in you it never leaves. The album itself is fantastic - rated by some as their best and it is certainly in the top three.
This is a concept album (don't stop reading here)but the story is very indepth and for new listeners its best not to try and understand what its all about. Just listen to the tracks as seperate songs as they all stand up alone (the title track, carpet crawlers and In the cage have all been a staple part of the live shows from 1976 onwards)
There isn't really a bad corner on this album its music and Lyrics are fantastic and if your used to just the modern day manufactured pop groups in the now shallow music business its a good example of what proper talent is all about.
There was once talk about making a movie based on this - what about a Peter Gabriel / Tim Burton collaboration?
So is it worth a purchase - simple answer is definitely but it will take a few listens to fully appreciate it
Having previously owned this title on vinyl it is great to hear it on cd in its remastered sound quality. The title song as given me much pleasure on hearing it again.
Being a baby boomer from the early fifties this album typifies the sounds we became adults with in the late sixties and early seventies. It is a wonderful innovative mishmash of ideas and wordplay originated mainly by Peter Gabriel, but with contributions by Banks and Rutherford and to a lesser extent Phil Collins. I orignally had it on vinyl, then double cassette and finally now on double CD but from the original analogue recording with all it's idiosyncrasies, it still remains a classic album evocative of that era. Brilliant words and music.
I bought it as I have been after this cd for ages. I loved Genesis back in the day and I still enjoy Peter Gabriels music today. This is a brilliant cd. Highly Recommend to original Genesis line up fans everywhere. but then they probably already know.
its an amazing album. the story immersed within the music is intriguing. pheno menal. a really good buy if you're a fan of this era of music, whichn i certainly am.
