  What a scream...
Review created: 10/07/06

From producer John Carpenter comes the all-new retelling of his terror classic, The Fog. Tom Welling (Smallville), Maggie Grace (Lost) and Selma Blair (Hellboy) star in this senses-shattering tale of demonic retribution, directed by Rupert Wainwright (Stigmata) and written by Cooper Layne.

Trapped within an eerie mist, the residents of Antonio Bay have become the unwitting victims of a horrifying vengeance. One hundred years ago, a ship carrying lepers was purposely lured onto the rocky coastline and sunk, drowning all aboard. Now they're back, long-dead mariners who've waited a century for their revenge. Seeking out the descendents of those responsible for their deaths, they lurk enshrouded within a supernatural fog of terror. Beware, any and all who stand in their way

  WOT THE FOG
Review created: 07/09/08

I am a fan of the original version of this and I thought I'd give the re-make a try. All I can say is that I feel really sorry for those who paid full price for this. It is OK. It explains a lot more throughout the film than the original - but this is really for the benefit of the target audience that cannot work things out for themselves. The acting is OK, as is the production and script. The problem I had is that it just didn't keep my attention for the whole duration of the film. If you are after a bit of the "same old" ghosts from the past with a score to settle then you may well enjoy this, but I would still say that the original is better. (as is the case with 90% of re-makes)

Being such a huge fan of early John Carpenter movies including this movie I thought I owed it to myself to see how the two would compare. I was really looking forward to sitting down and watching this re-make and was totally left speechless, it's rubbish! The original was brilliant this is crap! The acting is terrible, the director isn't much better and the story although it follows the same path as the original just doesn't measure up! You'll probably find people enjoyed this film and i'm not knocking that at all but if your a fan of the original and love john carpenters brilliant moviemaking avoid this piece of crap because it will only disapoint you!!

Good original film and a good attempt at a remake
Review created: 07/03/08

Good film first time around, not a bad remake at all, once you get over all the cast that you've seen in todays daytime series. A reasonable storyline and plot which isn't bad at keeping you on edge. A few "what the hell?" moments and outright in your face shocks. The ending is a bit testing and the acting has its predictable moments, but I don't want to sound too negative cause on the whole I thoroughly enjoyed watching this film and I recomend it highly!! Give it a go!!

  The Fog [2005]
Review created: 18/10/07(updated 25/10/07)

This re-telling of the 1980 horror film was given the go-ahead by John Carpenter who apparently was not completely satisfied with his original effort. The story remains pretty much the same:

~ exactly one hundred years before, a clipper ship makes its way through a thick fog and is lured towards the light of a campfire burning on the mainland. The flames of the campfire are a trick used to invite Blake and his crew to crash onto the rocks of Spivey Point; the conspirators then steal gold from the ship which they use to build the town of Antonio Bay. The plan is a success and the crew - a colony of lepers - are murdered by the conspirators. A century later, the ghostly figures rise from the depths of the ocean and, accompanied by a strange glowing fog, make their way towards the now prosperous town of Antonio Bay, seeking revenge for their deaths. The descendants of those who committed the atrocity now have one night in which to survive death at the icy hands of those who perished on the Elizabeth Dane ~

This [2005] version of 'The Fog' can be described simply as a teen-slasher flick, the director obviously keeping in-step with both re-makes like 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre' [2003] and comeback slasher films such as 'Scream' and 'I Know What You Did Last Summer'. The first mistake, I think: the pace of the film is increased compared to Carpenter's - the cast seems much younger and intense, although typically moody and troubled. Indeed, the craggy and gruff-voiced Tom Atkins who played fisherman, Nick Castle, in the first film is far more convincing than the flawless Tom Welling [Smallville]. A second aspect of this film that detracts from the original is evident in the revised screenplay, where the back story - the murder of Blake and his crew - has been extended considerably, resulting in much of the mystery being lost. This, and the enhanced special effects - especially the wall of fog that looks ferocious here - takes away the classic ghost story feel Carpenter achieved.

Critics and fans alike should, however, not be too hard on the film. It is, for all intents and purposes, a re-make of a film twenty-five years its senior. Things change. Each subsequent generation of horror fans will always enjoy watching the classic horror films, but they will have 'their' films, the films that they will remember in time. And is there any point in making a scene-for-scene re-make of any film? Look at Psycho [1998]: an excellent film, true to Hitchcock in every respect, and yet seemingly pointless.

Matthew J Lee-Williams, Review.

Have not the foggiest clue why they remade this film!
Review created: 16/06/07(updated 16/06/07)

An Oregon coastal town is visited by a malevolent fog, complete with ghostly mariners, intent on revenging themselves on the descendants of the murderous townsfolk who betrayed them. Starring Tom Welling and Selma Blair.

A completely needless remake of the superb original by John Carpenter. This film has none of the scares of its predecessor, although it does flesh out the backstory in a far more satisfying and original way. Of course the special effects are more accomplished, but the film is far more lightweight and has none of the creeping dread of the original - come to that the ghostly sailors are nowhere near as scary either. One to rent rather than to own i think.

Expected it to be just the old version re-hashed! Its not, it was much better than I expected. This version explains why the fog is evil and not just that its there and you should be afraid of it.

Simply put - it is a decent enough film and kept my attention throughout. Much better than I expected and would tell anyone who has not seen it that it is one they could enjoy.

To make it as simple as possible , dont go into this film expecting a rehash of the original because it isnt, Take this film on its own merits its a fast paced special effects laden ghost story and well worth a look for a good nights entertainment .

Basically I would rather sit in a field on a foggy day and watch the fog.
I would probably get more excitement and enjoyment than watching this film again.
There is no real character builing so one minute they are alive and the next minute they are dead and you don't really care.
Visual effects are good but this doesn't excuse the fact that this is another horor film re-make that should never have been re-made.

Story:
An island off the Oregon coast is the setting for this salty yarn of ghosts, lepers, betrayal, vengeance, and teen angst. A fog-enshrouded schooner from 1865 returns from the bottom of the sea to wreak vengeance on the locals of the island, and it's up to local DJ Stevie Wayne (Selma Blair), her charter-boat-captain lover, Nick (Tom Welling, from TV's SMALLVILLE), and his wayward girlfriend, Elizabeth (Maggie Grace, from TV's LOST), to save the day. All three are related to the town's founding fathers, with whom the ship-bound ghosts have an ancient score to settle. What that score is no one seems to know, but they need to find out, fast. DeRay Davis (BARBERSHOP) provides comic relief as Nick's lusty first mate, but the real scene stealer here is the fog itself, which is much more animated than in the 1980 John Carpenter original. Thanks to some nice CGI work, it slithers in, around, and under everything. Though gussied up with an angst-rock soundtrack and beautiful young TV actors, THE FOG is, at heart, a good old fashioned ghost story, replete with period costumes and inter-dimensional romance. Director Rupert Wainwright (STIGMATA) is good at capturing little details like the eerie tinkling of deep-sea fishing hooks hung out to dry, and the textures of moisture-beaded shower stall doors. John Carpenter and his partner, Debra Hill co-creators of the first FOG served as producers.

Comments:
Awesome Movie!
Brutal & Without any kind of campasion ghosts from the past take there revenge on todays citizens of a town that is responsible for there deaths!

Incredibly beautifull CGI work on the fog coming in from the sea to the coastline.

Great Movie to watch, check out the deleted scenes, some really neat stuff there!

I'm not really a big horror fan and bought this as a present for my sister, but watched it first and found it very entertaining. It is not exactly deep, but it was good fun and kept your attention. Not for you if your expecting hardcore horror though - it was a bit scary rather than seriously gorey.

  AMAZING AND CHILLING
Review created: 29/11/06(updated 29/08/08)

So...today's forecast is foggy with a 90% percent chance of EVIL!! The Fog is one of those films that just make you feel like trying to figure out what the guy behind you had for dinner. This remake of another 1980's version just doesn't make the cut at all in my opinion. In fact it falls several meters short. The basic premise here is that there's a small fishing town who's founding fathers committed a terrible crime and now vengeance is being sought in the form of a killer fog.

Think about that for a second A KILLER FOG!!!!! Does that sound scary at all!?!?!!? It's not as if you could possibly go into a movie about killer fog expecting to come out crying (unless you cry when your extremely bored). From a horror movie point of view this movie is more akin to an episode of Everybody Loves Raymond. It's just not scary at all you can spot every single little BOO from a mile away. On top of that it doesn't even make sense!!! I don't want to spoil anything here (because I know you're all just burning inside to drop whatever your doing and go see this film) but things just happen in the movie that don't even make sense at all!!! And you think they'll tie in later but they don't!!! Maybe they're setting up for "The Fog 2: Thicker Fog"? The movies only saving graces are some hot actresses, and Superman. Actually no, not even Superman could save this god forsaken kitty litter of a film.

To put a cap on things I would rather be decapitated with safety scissors than see this movie again. Please if you go to see this movie make sure to wear adequate protection, and you might want to book your therapy appointment before you go. They're a little bit backed up these days.

well what can i say?
i loved the first version good story, good actors and quite scary in a scence, so when i found out their was a remake i checked out the trailor, which i throught looked great, better effects and would be much scarer than the first.
what a disapointment when i viewed the new version. story was nothing what so ever in relation to the first, special effects looked cheap and non realistic what so ever, and even the acting was poor.
Stick with the old version much better.

this a had review to write as i don't really know how i feel about the film it was enjoable except maggie grace is crap she ruins the big scenes she acts perfectly normal and reads in the car wen things happen to major characters. selma blair was good in this movie she should of been the lead.tom welling was also good.the film would of been better i think if there was a bit more blood in the movie and if you haven't seen the original it's not hard to guess wat happens next.so really its an entertaing film for 90 mins but once it's over you don't give it another seconds thought.so watch this film if you you just want something to watch.there's no great loss if you don't.

  New version of a classic
Review created: 08/08/06
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This didn't wow audiences at the cinema but as a fan of modern horrors and fond of the original I decided to rent this. As with many remakes, of which there have been a lot lately? This will be compared in every way to the 1980 original. Much of it is the same and some scenes are very similar. However the main story of what happened in the past and the reason for the ghostly return are new and more thought out than the first one. Where the original one was definitely a horror, this feels more like a ghost story. It's not as scary or as violent but maybe more creepy.
This obviously had a much bigger budget than the original. This shows in the special effects which have had the biggest update. In this version the Fog really comes to life and can be animated to do more and this is the biggest improvement over the original. Other than that it has been sexed up a little with a young, good looking, well known cast including the beautiful Maggie Grace from Lost! The technology has been updated with mobiles, web cams and camcorders seen in the film. Other than that it is very similar. I did enjoy it ,even though you know what will happen. Mainly to see what they changed and improved or what was kept the same. An enjoyable film especially for fans of the first film or ghost stories but not a classic. One to rent maybe more than buy.
The DVD has a few trailers, 7 deleted scenes barely different to the finished version. 3 main features around 10 minutes each. The first looking at the story, interviews with the producer, director and John Carpenter. The next looks at the cast, location and compares the 2 films slightly. The effects of the Fog looks at the special effects. From the different types of Fog effects but also on the cgi, make up and stunts in the film. Overall a good nights fun 6/10.
