  The Da Vinci Code

A couple of years ago, I first read the Dan Brown book the Da Vinci code. I read it before all the hype or in fact actually before the book started becoming massive. Admittedly, I don't read many books as often as I should, however I had a long journey planned and needed something to read, a quick look at some of the new books on display I liked what I read on the back cover. I am also not in the slightest bit religious, however as I read on I found it to be a brilliantly done and a very exciting, if not fictious alternate story concerning historic events. I went to see the film a while after the book had come out and really enjoyed it, it stuck very closely to the book, only a few minor details were changed which involved I believe Sony sponsorship from what I could see! It was such a gripping film it was over before I realized, purely because I was concentrating so hard, the people I were with also enjoyed it. The film was a very fitting replication of the book and I would highly recommend it to anyone who has either read the book but not yet seen the film, or vice versa.

Do not dismiss this as just another Tom Hanks film !!!
It was totaly gripping, with a plot as twisty as a curly whirly :)
It arrived on wednesday, I have watched it 4 times by friday.
Even my 14 yr old son found this film excellent.
Well worth a look even if Tom is not your fav' actor.

Excellent film - well paced and acted. Had my doubts about Tom Hanks as Robert Langdon but he actually fitted the roll perfectky. Read the book some years ago and wasn't disappointed at all.

  The Da Vinci Myth
Review created: 10/01/08

Generally a good film with a punchy story line. Not a film for light viewing as some thought and concentration is needed to keep up with the complicated and fast paced plot. Any Templars viewing it will probably cringe or recoil in horror. Contained a wealth of factual errors, whether poetic licence was used or the writer just became confused is a question that the viewer will have to decide for themselves. This is one film that certainly raises more questions than provides any purported answers. If it wasn't for Tom Hanks brilliant portrayal the film may have been something of an over developed flop.

Dan Brown's international bestseller comes alive in the film The Da Vinci Code, directed by Academy Award Winner Ron Howard.

Join symbologist Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) and cryptologist Sophie Neveu (Audrey Tauton) in their thrilling quest to solve a bizarre murder mystery that will take them from Paris to London-and behind the veil of a mysterious ancient society, where they discover a secret so powerful it could shake the very foundation of mankind.

Very good, shot well with good all round performances.
But you should have a read of the book first, as some bits are of course always missed out, and it will make the story much easier to follow.
A good edition to your DVD collection.

The Da Vinci Code (DVD Extras Disc)
Directed by: Ron Howard
Starring: Tom Hanks, Jean Reano, Ian McKellen, Audrey Tautou
Certificate: 12
Running time: 149 Min

We get asked to review things all the time, however, when we were looking to review The Da Vinci Code on DVD, the funny thing was, they only sent the extras disc, so if you want to know what we thought of the film, click here. The Bik had the task of looking at the extras, over to you matey.....

I am in the unique position of not actually having seen the film that the extras disc is from. That having been said, the extras disc did make me want to see it. The disc itself was based around the Director, Ron Howard and the writer of the book on which the film is based, Dan Brown. There is lots of footage concerned with the setting up of the film, the locations etc, but these seem to be repeated in different parts of the disc.
The interview with the director is informative and interesting. But it is the interview with Dan Brown that proved the most frustrating, there were flashy titles which came up announcing what the subject was that Mr Brown was going to discuss and then he would talk for 2 to 3 minutes then another flashy title and another 2-3 mins, why?, why they didn’t just let him ramble in a single interview?. It just panged of trying to fill out the disc on the sensationalism of the author.

All in all entertaining if not just a little bit irritating.

I'd already seen this film but I didn't fully understand the plot first time around, so I read up on The Knights Templar & Opus Dei & their relevance to The Da Vinci Code & bought this copy, which was excellent, & this time I did understand the plot, it's a very thought provoking film & thoroughly enjoyable.

The perfect enigma between fact and fiction
Think I might have found it difficult to understand if I hadn't read the book

Good film although slightly too slow, film which refers to the bible and jesus christ and how his descendants may still be living today because of a daughter he may have had with mary magdalene! lots of questions and theories in which bible believers may find very interesting

trite old rubbish - avoid if you have a brain

Jeez... or should i say Holy Mary Magdelen "lover of god"... if you read the book and thought that was trite old shite, then you will NOT like the film either.

Tom Hanks is of course a great actor, and does what he can, but it's a mind numbing flick, with nothing to save it from being a boring "American adventure in Europe".

Sure the basic idea that Jesus has living descendants (after having a child with Mary Magdelen) is a fascinating one.. and no doubt the patriarchal catholic church WOULD do everything to prevent a WOMAN being shown as the true "hold grail".

Trouble is the rest of the plotline which is meant to carry this story, doesn't make the grade, and the whole film is just a nonsense.

Go for a run, open a bottle of beer, or re-read a few pages of you favourite book... in fact go to bed 90 mins earlier than usual, or even go sweep the pavement...any of these will be a more filfilling use of time.

P
