I decided to buy this DVD as the novel is a set book in my degree course, and thought this would be an ideal "back-up" to the book, which I loved. The film was not a disappointment and closely followed the novel especially at the beginning, with some artistic license from mid to end of the film.
The imagery of the actual colour purple is not emphasised as much in the film (in comparison to the novel) as I thought it could have been, especially as this is key to the underlying message of the storyline. There are scenes with the fields of purple/Nettie's clothes at the end of the film, but I feel there was more opportunity to use this symbolism in film, eg the colour of Celie's trousers, her room painted purple etc.
I found The Color Purple thought provoking and moving - it gave a real insight into prejudices in the early 1900's, not only between black and whites, but also between men and women in Southern USA.
I'd thoroughly recommend this film to others, especially those with an interest in 20th Century US history and the role of women in society.
This is a story of how loving someone and knowing you are loved in return can be enough to keep you going through anything life throws at you.
Abused by her step-father and husband, the main character played excellently by Whooppi Goldberg, is kept going by the love and friendship of her sister, who is cruelly separated from her for many years.
The film has strong threads of racism, violence and abuse but its main messages of love and self-sacrifice will have you crying like a baby.
I would rate this as one of the best films in recent years.
If you loved the movie, please read the book, and keep the kleenex handy.
I decided to buy this film because i saw it on tv years ago. Loved it and thought i would like to own it. Very good acting and heart wrenching at times.
A steven Speilberg film set in rural american south starring Whoopi Goldberg. This film is excellent, i used to watch it back to back afew years ago. I lost my copy which was on vhs about 2 years ago and recently picked up the dvd and was reminded of just how much i love the ilm.. Never fails to bring a tear to my eye. Its a must have in your collection and by far the best film that whoopy has starred in..
I am not watching this dvd because its a gift but I could virtually guarentee its excellent as it stars the great Whoopi Goldberg who I am a great fan of and think is one of the greatest actresses ever.
i think this film is brilliant. it always brings tears to my eyes. there is nothing to hate about this film. it just shows that if you push the little people hard enough they will eventually get their own back.
great film i enjoyed it as much as i did first time i watched it 20 years ago excerlent value for money well wrapped and fast delivery not the last time i will be watching it as well
A really good classic film. Heartwrenching, but very moving. oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
Just a time old clasic and one that makes you remember just how lucky we are to have the freedom of love and speach and that gratification is something that we should remember every day of our lives..
The Color Purple is a moving and emotional film which is beautifully acted and directed and although it is a very long film you will be riveted to your seat for the full two and a half hours viewing time.
It is the story of Celie (Whoopi Goldberg) and the terrible abusive life she endures at the hands of both her husband and step father. The only thing which brightens her life is her enduring love for her sister whom she is separated from for many years.
The film contains strong subject matters including rape, violence and racism but its message of love, sacrifice and sincerity shine through and the beautiful imagery in the film will have you reaching for the kleenex from almost the first scene.
The fact that it was nominated for 11 Academy Awards, including best picture and actress and won none is in my mind beyond belief.
This film is simply superb.

Read the book years ago, still is my favourite book of all time. I watched the vhs when it came out, almost as good as the book. I then bought the dvd to watch with my 19 year old daughter who really enjoyed it and knew quite a few of the stars. It is a film to watch over and over again.
I actually bought this item for a friend who had been looking to buy this film. Of course my first reaction is to go on to ebay and find this item. Of course there it is and for a really good price so how can I now buy this for my friend.
She has since watched this film (not for the first time) and has now stored it in her library of dvds to watch. This film is an all time classic and will never go out of date.
I studied the book in sixth form and 'The colour purle' will always remain my favourite book. The dvd encapsulates the themes and emotions covered in the book perfectly, its a touching tale of a strong sisterly bond overcoming many hardships and i would recommend the dvd to anyone. The only downside to the dvd is the format of the disk, the film is split into two parts and you must turn the disk over half way through to continue viewing. However it gives you a chance to pause and reach for the tissues !
