The Brothers Grimm (DVD)

It's different and I liked it and it was hard to predict where it was going! Which was good. It features the abduction of Hansel and Gretel and Little Red Riding Hood among others, a Woodsman turned Werewolf, a Sleeping Once was Beauty and a distracted, disturbed damsel with "issues". There is a gruesome take on the Gingerbread man that is completely unexpected and creepy!! The film has elements of the Princess Bride, Shrek, Snow White and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, but is a modern film, set in mediaeval times with humour interjected throughout.

The forest, which is definitely alive, centres around a high tower where, what used to be, a beautiful raven haired princess is determined to regain her youth and life force through manipulative means. A mixture of Rapunzel, Sleeping Beauty and Snow White, with the Mirror revealing both reality and illusion. It weaves elements of Grimm's fairytales into one and is a dark, enchanted tapestry.

The Wolf was very well done, suitably supernatural and not the type of creature you'd want to run into in a forest, but this film is definitely not on a league with A Company of Wolves. It was horror in a shrek rather than a hammer way! Definitely room for improvements, but enjoyable. If you like the myth and legend of fairy tales, the supernatural, horror, fantasy and comedy, you should enjoy this. Very different and Definitely entertaining.

The action-adventure tale revolving around the legendary German brothers Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm. The fictional plot has the folklore collectors, now called Jake and Will, traveling from village to village pretending to protect townsfolk from enchanted creatures and pulling off exorcisms. They are put to the test when they encounter a real magical curse, requiring genuine courage!

The Brothers Grimm is a very enjoyable fantasy/adventure movie. Following the lives of two brothers through fairytales which you will recall from childhood. The movie grips you from the beginning, the characters are superb and direction brilliant.
Matt Damon and Heath Ledger shine in roles you do not normally see them in and Terry Gilliam is an excellent director.
This film is an escape from the norm of adventure movies and this alone makes it a worth while watch. Maybe not suitable for the very young, but those older children who have been read bedtime stories will adore this movie as much as us adults do.

Been meaning to see for ages, thought film was very good.
Terry Gilliam comes up trumps again. Lots of special effects, will love it if you like fantasy, lots of humour too.

I bought this dvd, because I am a huge fan of Heath Ledger and Brother´s Grimm was the one movie missing in my collection of his great works on film.

Ive always thought that Heath Ledger and Matt Damon were good actors. If they were any good within this combination i wasn't sure. Unfortunately i had bid on this the same day the death of Heath Ledger was on the news! I was plesantly surprised by the packed content and graphics of the film it seemed crammed with details from the book and i think it did it a honor. Definately recommended

well this film definatley puts a twist on the way that you will look at fairy tales from now on i thought it was worth watching but not an all time great

I only really bought this because I'd got a load of other DVDs from the same seller and it was on at 50p. The two leads are weak (as ever in my opinion) and there is very little 'magic' when you compare it to films like Harry Potter. The best character is the French torture expert.
Disappointing from Gilliam, but didn't have great tools to work with. Imagine what the difference would have been if he had character actors like Johnny Depp as the leads.

It will hardly get you roaring in your seat (well it might do-who knows) but it is very easy to watch and follow-if that's your thing and has Hansel and Gretel, Little Red Riding Hood etc in it to remind you of your childhood. Quite dark in places-in a Sleepy Hollow kind of way-but also a bit like BBC's current Robin Hood series as well.

If it's cheap, why not give it a try?

more than a kids film, has sub plots, and stroy thats great, bro grim usually set up monsters and fake kill them, until they are charged to sort out a real one, thats whene the fun begins, great fx.

Who could have predicted that anarchic ex-Python Terry Gilliam wouldn't get on with the Weinstein brothers, eh? Tossed together for this would-be fairytale romp, they rowed like Burton and Taylor and the result is a bloody mess. Shame, because the pitch is strong - retooling the real-life folk-tale tellers as conmen who rip off gullible peasants with fake exorcisms, before facing true terror. Matt Damon and Heath Ledger show spark, charm and comic timing, but Gilliam never liked the script and his fix-as-you-film approach breaks the movie's back - the editing's choppy, the story nonsensical, the support either uncomfortable (a short-changed Monica Bellucci) or insane (an eccentrically dreadful Peter Stormare). Two featurettes complement the feature, while Gilliam's dirt-free, dry chat-track nails the picture's problem: "I have a lot of ideas I try to put all in one scene. Then the editor and I try to carve out something that is understandable to an audience... I always get carried away."

this is an excellent dark fairy tale type story. very gothic in parts. it tell the story of the mis adventure of the brothers grimm, played by matt damon and heath ledger. the special features are brilliant. some of the deleted scenes would have made this film even better. so it is worth looking at.. the special effects are outstanding. and the behind the scenes are interesting. but i'm not really in to to that. also contains commentary, (which i did not watch) but over all this is an excellent film if like me you like dark gothic type films.

Not a bad film but no where near as good as you want it to be.It has all the right ideas of the classic childrens fable stories,but never delivers the exciting story you so want it to be.Its worth a watch if you have nothing better to do

In a nutshell I fell asleep watching this. That is a review in itself. I really rate Terry Gilliam as a storyteller and director but this movie just had no grab. It looks pretty, it sure reads pretty but it just has no magic watchability factor at all. Sloooooow and a bit boring. From what I saw of it, the beginning was okay; although with that haircut and costume Matt Damon looks incredibly like Eddie Izzard and that was an unfortunate mental connection that I made throughout the rest of the film (well for the bits I was actually awake). I woke up briefly mid way through and there were two kids in a forest leaving a trail of breadcrumbs. Then I snoozed again until the big finale with a witch, a chopper, several frenchmen and a mirror. Not particularly bad or offensive. Very accomplished but really not that good. For hard core Gilliam fans or fairy tale aficionados only.

The way that Damon and Ledger get on on-screen is great and they clearly had a lot of fun making the film. It's pretty much the best reason to watch it. It's a bit mad but entertaining enough. Felt a bit let down with the end. If anything, why have Monuci Belluci in it all? Lot of build-up but a bit anti-climactic. Think it was more of a marketing ploy. The one-liners and dialogue anre good if the overall product a little lacking. If you're a fan of Terry Gilliam or someone who used to like fairy stories when you were little (or even now!) you'll probably like it.

i brought this for my daughter who loves the film, very pleased with it, i gave it to her with her xmas presents. she has already watched it and im hoping to watch it soon.

I didn't enjoy this film but my daughter thought it was great so that's two different opinions for you. It had good potential it just didn't quite reach what I would call a watchable film. The person who I purchased it from sent it in good time and was in good condition.

we where very pleased with the dvd, just what we wanted and as always the price is always our guiding factor

A fairytale with a difference! if you like fairytales, myth and magic, then this is the film for you.
Excellent effects and storyline with all the classic favorite characters, how many can you name?

I bought this DVD because my Daughter likes Heath Ledger and being directed by Terry Gilliam of "Monty Python" fame, I was looking forward to some good comedy
moments, I didn`t get any, I felt that there were many times in the film when the chance to have some good comedy, was lost, it just didn`t quite hit the mark, it was as if the director thought that being very loud and having plenty of buffoonery would be enough to carry it through, he was wrong, the story line of small time conmen going around the countryside extracting payments for ridding villages of ghosts and forms of evil that they had set up themselves and then later on, finding themselves having to face a true form of evil, was ok and the acting was ok, Matt Damons English accent was pretty good, but all in all, I can only rate this DVD as average.

Ok, not everything you would expect, but good healthy fun, good casting and decent enough characterisation carry the film through. Play name the fairy story as you go through the film there' slots in there - also watch out for a cameo from Jordans first child - riveting.
