I saw Steeleye many times in my youth and always remembered them fondly. I had their albums on vinyl but when this became an outdated form of listening to music I never replaced them. Saw this album whilst browsing and thought "Why not ?". Every bit as good as I remembered, if not better. Classic folk with great lyrics. Brilliant. Where is my Afgan coat and loons ?
One of their best hits CD's, A great album of old english folk music.Varied tracks from several of their album's so it gives you a good taste of them before you buy.
This CD is a good cross - section of Steeleye Span, several of the greatest hits are on there - the obvious ones being their No1 Christmas Hit " Gaudete" and "All around my hat" a crossover hit that brought the Spans to a wider audience. From good tight folk rock to a more gentle laid back style - this album is a good showcase for anyone who is not sure about their less well known music.
Maddy Prior's vocals are excellent without exception showing the wide range of styles she is capable of and the sometimes over-complicated ( well it is if you're trying to play it) musical arrangement make Steeleye Span stand apart from their peers - probably the most under-rated folk - rock act on the circuit today.
I know Steeleye Span and used to regularly play cassettes of theirs. New car has CD player and I had to get modern. I'm very selective about the tracks I like, all my cassettes were personal compilations and this CD included many of my favorites. Little Sir Hugh, Long Lankin, Black Jack David and Bach Goes To Limerick as well as the top twenty hit of the era, All Around My Hat are all brilliant. One major miss is Galtee Farmer but you can't have everything.
