I like this because Johnny Depp is one of my favourite actors. I think you need to appreciate musical theatre to appreciate the whole film, Sondheims music is the real star. Depp can sing, and brings a gritty rock star quality to the role of Sweeney Todd. Carter as Mrs Lovett is her usual quirky self, she can also sing, a new role for her. The blood and gore are minimal considering the nature of Todds' business! It is more Hammer House horror than graphic 'CG' effects, but with an edge that only Tim Burton can bring. the story full of twisted love and quite sad really. Overall enjoyable, but remember this is a musical and is 70% led by music and even when there is speech, it has musical score underneath. I will be watching it again, but I do love the music. Try it for something different, you might find it surprisingly cultural?

Tim Burton was always known to be a director that didn't attend to the Academy's personal taste. His movies were true auteur works, always with a Gothic stunning visual and stories there weren't always what it seemed. It was as if Burton were filming every movie on Halloween. Now, however, it's going to be hard for the Academy to ignore Burton's new film- definitely his best one. Sweeney Todd offers the unlikely pairing of musical and horror. And, man, it works splendidly.

The story begins with Benjamin Barker's arrest by Judge Turpin, a true personification of evil, a man who doesn't think twice in convicting Barker for a crime he did not commit. Sent away of London, he returns with a new facet: Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Until this moment on, his barbershop is scenery to grim assassination- through which the evidences of murder are kept hidden thanks to the help of Mrs. Lovett, the baker. Sweeney vows revenge against the judge.

Burton's direction is truly fantastic, exploring his already trademark visuals with bravura. This time, the dark pictures really suit the story, in a way that they both contrast each other; for no matter how dark the city is, it can't compare to the citizens that live within it. Sweeney, once a pure man, becomes the darkest of them all. And there is no better actor in the world that could portray this like Johnny Depp does. His performance is a defining one, one that goes far beyond the Jack Sparrows, Edward Scissorhands, or J.M Barries that Depp portrayed with perfection. Sweeney Todd is a man torn apart by vengeance, a man that answers only to the call of death. Depp illustrates the psychological factors of the character in subtle nuances, giving one of the greatest performances in the history of cinema. A true achievement that lives up to the excellence of the entire movie.

Absolutely Fantastic, could never get tired of watching it.
The songs are so catchy, and the storyline is full of twists & surprises. Keeps you on the edge of your seat to the very end.

And Johnny Depp is fantastic in it.

Highly recommended.

The best thing about this film is Jonny! As in Pirates he adds somthing to the part which only jonny can. You will need to really like Jonny to make it all the way through this DVD into the blood and guts towards the end. Way to much singing fir my liking and it doesn't really work with the horror! Good film buy glad I didn't bother to go to the cinema to see it.

A Conventicle of Geniuses Came Together Here
Review created: 06/06/08

And this conventicle has brought us a glistening and irresistible nightmare. There are delicious Dickensian overtones throughout, and the look of the film itself is poetically potent. The entire mix is shockingly seductive with an unforgettable ending. Burton's humor is part and parcel of his sheer brilliance, as always, and, as always, the great Johnny Depp is intense and positively unforgettable. All performances are electric, the pace and length are perfect, and the film draws us deeper and deeper with every moment into its stunning blend of the grotesque and the undeniably beautiful. Analysing the power of a film like this is no simple matter. The whole is dazzlingly disturbing. You don't want to miss a second of it, even though the film is merciless to us and to its protagonists. It sings, it glows, it enchants, it horrifies. I want to see it again. And again. It's a brutal and shattering masterpiece.

This film is perfect for those who are musical lovers but in my opinion a slight disappointment when it came to excitment and far too much singing and not enough suspense throughout the film. I really wanted to see this film due to the Jonny Depp/Tim Burton factor but I'm afraid I was disappointed and won't be recommending it to others.

Sweeney Todd - The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
Review created: 30/05/08

Being a Tim Burton fan I knew this film would appeal to me. I must admit however it did take me some time to get into the musical element of the film. That said, the dark humor and excellent choice for the lead roles soon took over. As expected Johnny is the lead role, a perfect choice, as was Helena, although her resemblance to the corpse bride was obvious. Very bloody, but what would you expect. Great film.

  BEST FILM EVER!
Review created: 29/05/08

I originally saw this at the cinema, because I love Johnny Depp. After I saw it once I couldn't wait for the DVD to be released. I saw it at the cinema about 6 times all together, because I fell in love with the songs and performances.
Having the 2 disc edition was a bonus, until I watched the second disc... I was disappointed that it focused on the stage production and background of Sweeney Todd rather than the film. This is just my opinion, and it's probably biased because I was expecting a lot more JD.

  Sweeney Todd DVD- good buy
Review created: 28/05/08

Brilliant buy for fans of Tim Burton and Johnny Depp (I am both!). Burton's dark humour is a perfect combination with Depp's ability to portray Sweeney Todd as a (slightly unbalanced) victim of injustice pursuing vengeance. The film has been well-cast, with Alan Rickman fitting into the role of villian. Very entertaining, but definitely not one for the kiddies :D

One of the best Gory film for 2008
Review created: 16/04/08

''Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street' tells the story of wrongfully imprisoned Benjamin Barker (Johnny Depp) who returns to the streets of London after 15 years as Sweeney Todd, after learning that his wife has killed herself. In hope of revenge against Judge Turpin (Alan Rickman) who was responsible for his imprisonment and the suicide of his wife, Todd returns back to his home and barber shop on Fleet Street where, with the help of Mrs Lovett (Helena Bonham Carter) a pie maker in the premises downstairs, Todd begins to murder his customers by slitting their throats whist they are sitting in the chair, and then sending them to the cellar where they are used for pies.

I've seen the West End show of Sweeney Todd (who was then played by Jason Donovan) and absolutely loved it, so I was familiar with the story and the songs and knew what to expect when going to see this movie adaption. The team of Burton, Depp and Bonham Carter have done it again and recreated the classic tale perfectly and kept the charm and black comedy of the stage play perfectly in the big screen version - something that raley happens in stage to screen conversions. Depp's singing abilities and London accent were surprisingly good and Burton's usual dark imagination created a believable, yet still stage-like atmosphere to the Victorian London setting.

If you are unfamiliar with the story or the play, I do warn you that this is very gory (hence the 18 certificate) and the dialogue is also mainly in song, I personally found it to be one of the best films I've seen in a long time and every performance from the whole cast was brilliant.
