Simon & Garfunkel - Tales From New York [Remastered] (C
Review created: 07/09/08

It's quite refreshing to find a new CD of songs by Paul Simon that does not contain any of his previous hits - because there were so many of them and his music is so well-loved that I'm not really complaining!

It's a treat to listen to him, singing perhaps more thoughtfully than earlier in his life but hey, we all get older!

I love this guy's work - and can happily listen to his gently poetic approach to situations he has turned into his songs.

Just recommend - a guy of this standing in the trade has to be worth spending a few quid to experience. Try it.

After a couple of lame albums from one of the worlds finest songwriters, Paul Simon has written an album of beautiful love songs and some uplifting beats. Stand out tracks are "Wartime Prayers" and "Father and daughter" however the entire album is a comfortable and enjoyable listen. Definately his best work since the outstanding Graceland. GKD

  Still Not Sure
Review created: 16/12/06

I bought this album as a prelude to seeing Paul Simon at the NEC Birmingham last month and I've still not made up my mind. When he played his new stuff at the gig it was truly fantastic and I really enjoyed the whole night. Somehow the songs don't sound as full on the CD as they did live although they have grown on me since the gig. I don't know if it's the new production style with Eno but the sounds just don't seem to have the oomph of a Paul Simon album. Compared to Graceland or Rhythm of the Saints the songs seem rather tame or quiet which is quite the opposite of the way they came across live ('how can you live in the North East', etc.). I hope he releases a live version some day.

I waqsn't sure when I bought the album whether I would like it or not. I bought it on spec after listening to just two tracks but I should'nt have worried. The album was as always from paul Simon superb. I have played the album almost constantly since I bought it and have not got bored with it yet, which is a good sign. The tracks are complicated in there make up which is a Paul Simon trait but this time unusually so. The first time I listened to it I was over the moon with the variety of 'styles' within each track they seemed to tempt you into guessing the way the track was going and at the last minute changed with suddeness causing much delight. I have been racking my brain for something negative to say about the album but the only thing I can come up with was that when listened to as background music a few of the tracks were a bit 'samey' and that's real nit picking because when listened to at 'normal' volumes all the tracks are in my opinion great. It's been a long time since I listened to an album that was in my opinion perfect. A super album from a truly superb musician.

I bought this mainly for the Father & Daughter song, but as usual with all new albums, it takes a few listens to really appreciate all the track. Very enjoyable all in all.

I have read some derogatory reviews about SURPRISE but disagree
as this is a superbly entertaining listen. The melodies are strong,
and not cloaked beneath the surface,
and Simon's lyrics are more accessible than in a long time.
Pardon my French, but this album dumps dung from a great height on " You're the one. "
Brian Eno's involvement is a bonus, and his embellishments very
welcome as it steers the artist in a quite different direction.
The musicianship is exemplary and even Simon's fretwork ( he is
THE main guitarist )although not mind-boggling, is not half bad.
Only the final track "Father and Daughter" does not involve Eno,
ann this makes it slightly more commercially appealing and an
obvious choice for a single. I don't think there is a weak track in sight,
and if you were put off by sleights you encountered, don't be,
but just be open-minded as to Eno's electronic involvement.
Paul Simon's voice, as usual, is as pure and clear as freshly blown glass;
who needs a frizzy haired partner to harmonize with ?!!
Surprise is the title , and will probably be your reaction too.
Coming from someone who actually KEPT the Capeman album, this
release is actually up there with his best work.
Purchase without trepidation, cheers.
