Big fan of gangster/under-cover cop films. This is one I have'nt seen before, so I thought I might aswell purchase it as it wasn't going for much (£2)and I was'nt hugely disapointed but it isn't one of the best of its genre, plus it has'nt aged well.
You may not have heard of Director Phil Joanou and I can't blame you. After being heralded as the new Spielberg in the late 80's this is the only decent film he ever made as far as I'm concerned, but it is absolutely brilliant!
Gary Oldman is spot on. An alcoholic during the making of the movie and having grown up in a poor one-parent family (father left family when he was 7 and later died of alcoholism, mother worked as a cleaning lady) in London's East End he is just completely convincing as a young hood. His drunken tantrums in the film are spectacular, Sean Penn is great with a silent dynamic. Those who have seen The Departed will agree that though Leo Di Caprio does a decent job, he can't hold a candle to Penn's performance. Nervous, vulnerable, edgy, angry and aggresive. Ed Harris is his usual fantastic self with an utterly believable part as ice-cold Irish Mob-boss.
I often thought about this film when I recently saw the Departed. This film is the better movie if your looking for an Irish Gangster film. Great Fun!
nothing to dislike about this totally awsome film, the acting from all the characters is second to none.sean penn and gary oldman ed harris robin wright(penn)sean have at least been given some sort of award for one hell of a film bought this film because i like the genre ,just the cast alone grabs your attention,i was not disappointed and neither will you.
