Once back at base, your UMPC becomes a desktop PC with all the power you'd expect from the Intel processor. 1Gb RAM makes this machine a powerful tool which can run Office 2007 SBE as well as your normal programs with ease. Slot the unit into the included desk stand and you can connect keyboard, external monitor and LAN to the system getting it ready for its next outing.

The optional extended battery gives it around 6.5 hours of constant use and I would recommend the leather case as the neoprene one included is not worthy of the machine. Left with what it comes with in the box, you have a 2.5 hour run time which is disappointing but realistic in the market space.

Using it is a singular joy. The flip up screen allows you to use the thumb-keyboard, whilst the two cameras (front and back) give you the ability to do Skype calls as well as straight picture taking. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth built in make this unit the ultimate traveller although you can still plug in the included dongle and connect to a projector/monitor and wired LAN. Security is via the built-in fingerprint reader as well as Vista's uprated security.

Its only downside is the size of the RAM disk space. 32Gb is advertised but with the Sony bloatware and trialware, you will have a job getting much more than 10Gb free. Not having a CD/DVD drive included also makes software installation a pain as you either have to make another machine's resources available or copy everything onto memory sticks. That being said, it is a remarkable piece of equipment and highly desirable.

Watch the prices though. These sell for between £1,200 and £1,500 in the traditional channels but you can still source them from dealers for less than £950 brand new and unopened - all in which makes auctions for second hand ones at the same price a little worrying. The earlier models had standard mechanical drives installed and many were imports from the US and other countries that had the Cingular 'phone card in it negating that CF slot. These are obsolete (much to the annoyance of the owners) and are very available for over-inflated prices. The UX1XN does not suffer from the heating issues which dog the OQO and its XBlack screen makes it useable in direct sunlight more than most others in the class.

Above all, remember what you are buying - an ULTRA MOBILE PC, not a laptop or a PDA, but something slap bang in the middle. All the power of Windows Vista and your data in a real runtime machine that would fit in a handbag. Much more than a PDA, but not much less than a fully fledged PC.
