For ages now people have been telling me that I should stay clear of the ps3 that the Xbox 360 was the way to go, But my mind was unchangeable I wanted a ps3 from the first moment, and I believe it is the right choice in the long run they may be a shortage of games in the Uk market but this will be a temporary problem and eventually the Xbox wont be able to keep up with the games on the ps3, Apparently Microsoft already had problems getting Assassins Creed onto there disc so it wont be long before the games don’t fit and your are forced to upgrade to an hd drive even then HD DVD's arent as big as Blu-Ray. Now once you have decided on purchasing a ps3 there are a few available options everyone tells you to buy the 60Gb if possible but I personally believe that the 40Gb is the better option. Here are the reasons people tell you to get a 60Gb and my thoughts on them.
1. You cant play ps2 games on the 40gb console.
well you cant play all ps2 games on the 60Gb either there is a list you need to check to see if the game will work. Also I still have a ps2 for ps2 games if I want, and let me ask one question when you bought your ps2 how many ps1 games did you ever play on it I know I never played one. PS1 games will work on any PS3 and are playable on your psp aswell through remote play

2. Its only 40Gb
It may only me 40 gb but that should be more than enuf to keep you going and the HD is fully upgradable people are putting 300-500gb HDs in there ps3's so is size really an issue, specially as HDs are so cheap nowadays.

3. It only has 2 usb Ports
How many do you really need at any one time, one charging a controller one with an external HD, and if you really do need more than 2 you can just plug a usb hub into one of the ports.

4.It doesn't have card readers
why would I need card readers on my ps3 I have a pc for that. But again if this is important to you you can purchase a usb card reader.

So these are the arguments for an against the 60gb and 40gb consoles but I have left one thing out that not many people know, the 2 consoles use different processors and the 40gb console has a quieter cooler more reliable cpu in than its 60Gb counterpart that is prone to overheating especially if you have a imported version of the 60gb console. So for this reason alone I believe people should buy the 40gb console Sony did stopmaking the 60Gb for a reason.

And on the Note of games if you fed up with the Uk releases you can buy your games from anywhere in the world as the ps3's games are region free and work in any ps3. Hope this helps Some of you out there

The Playstation 3 is Worth EVERY PENNY!
Review created: 16/12/07(updated 16/12/07)

The long awaited PlayStation 3 is finally available in all stores and prices are steadily decreasing.

I bought the PS3 as an upgrade to my previous consoles (The PS2 and Nintendo Wii). Being a heavy gamer, having the latest and most popular games console is a must.

I didn't buy it just because of it's looks. I bought it because of the wide features on the PS3... it allows me to connect my PSP to it and browse my files. Anyone that has used or owned a PSP will be able to navigate around the GUI with ease. The web browser is really quick and it allows you to connect to the Internet using WIFI or the internal Ethernet connection. It is ready to use out of the box with the ability to choose an alternative language upon first startup. There are regular firmware updates that add features or improve existing features.

Another great feature of the PS3 is that it allows the user to install "Other OS" so you can install various flavors of Linux on it. Making the console more than just a media center.

When I first started using this console with the standard RGB cable. The quality of the pixels looked very grainy. But when I had bought a 1080p HDMI cable and had it connected to my HD LCD TV. The difference was greatly noticeable by the level of colour and the sharpness of the gameplay.

What I like about the PS3 is that the online service is completely free, so you can be up and running straight away and not worry about renewing your subscription every month. I downloaded the Gran Turismo HD and Ninja Gaiden Sigma Demo from the Online Network and when I was done with them I simply removed it from the hard disk. The PS3 has a unique download manager, that allows you to download multiple games from the Sony online network and whilst you are waiting for the download to complete you can still play any other game from disc or already pre-installed on your hard drive, and when the download has completed a small pop up message appears to let you know it has been done so you can go back to the menu and run the game. This means you can still use your PS3 even though it is busy with another task. This is the advantage of the Cell CPU.

The PS3 uses a 2.5" SATA Hard Disk and it is easily removable, meaning you can change your existing 40GB hard disk and have it fitted with a massive 250GB if you have the extra cash. The maximum the X-Box 360 Elite can handle is 120GB and it is not as easily expandable since it needs to be official X-Box hardware, whereas the PS3 does not. If you install Linux it will only use 10GB of the hard disk.

The PS3, like the XBOX 360 uses wireless controllers and uses the USB port to recharge the controllers. I was surprised by how long the battery lasted on my controller, perhaps because it is new. The rechargeable battery is integrated into the controller, even though it seems so light. Therefore it does not need to be bought separately like the Nintendo Wii and 360.

I honestly believe this console is here to stay for at least another 5-7 years because of what it is capable of. If anything £299 is more than reasonable for what you get for your money. If you have a HDTV, you will be able to use it to it's full potential. If you have a standard TV, it may feel to you like your Playing on a PS2 and you will be limiting your experience.

There is so much more I want to say... But I'll leave it to you to discover them when you have bought it :D.

This is an honest review, no fanboys.

Hot & Clumsy - but a great Blueray DVD Player!
Review created: 05/07/08
by:

Summary:
Pretty, Large, Shinny, Hot. But: A great quality Bluray DVD player (if you can be bothered with controls) AND it plays games - Wow!

All round pretty good! I was very pleased with it.

The device works well and does what it says on the label and overall therefore it is a good system and a good price. I bought it for the Blueray Disk DVD player and when you compare the prices of the dedicated Sony Blueray machines, the PS3 is a fabulous price and physically smaller than a Sony machines that ONLY play DVDs (i.e. no games function!). The games services are therefore a FREE bonus!

There are a number of down sides (none of which stop the device being good) which are really a list of 'gripes' rather than complaints.

OK:
- The user interface is not that intuitive and is too 'slippery', options just slide past and there is lots of forward and backwards stuff happening.
- There are no front panel buttons - I would at least have liked a 'X' and a 'O' buttons (i.e. 'Go', 'Backwards'). Getting the controller started up and wireless connected to the PS3 is not 'instant' and it is the only way to get the PS3 up an operational.
- The classic hand held games controller is for me absolutely _not_ ergonomic, how a button marked 'X' can be the 'Go/Yes' button is beyond me?! You have to switch on teh remote control and wait connect for wireless connection before you can get the console up and operational. The remote controller startup is not instant and really needs two hands to operate eve for most simple functions (even getting a DVD to start playing, or even to shut down the system)! OK perhaps for interactive game play use teh controller is fine, but 'stupid' for other services. I don't suppose Sony are ever going to change that aspect - it is I imagine as embedded in the game console as the 'accelerator, brake and clutch' layout of a car, so, moving on ...
- The case is beautiful big polished plastic like a black japanese enameled box - looks good, but touch it once and you have finger marks all over it. Yes, I know that you don't handle the thing that often, but, there is no easy way to pick it up without making it look awful unless you use gloves.
- USB ports for front access for external devices are hidden under a case projection - can't see them to plug into! More scratches and finger marks!
- Device runs hot all the time
- PS3 40G has no backward compatibility for PS'2' games
- Wireless Internet connectivity was fiddly to enable - it was as if it simply did not 'want to' connect. Took me about 3 days and a bit of online research to figure it out.
- Registering online was hideously lengthy and unhelpful - it may have taken about 20 minutes to do and probably not worthwhile!
- User manual is borderline useless and frankly irritating
- Connection to media player (thorugh the internet/home network) is OK for as much as 'several minutes'. I.e. extremely unreliable/un-usable. This problem _could-be_ my Sony Vaio PC's fault, but there is indequate feedback about which end is having problems and as such it is unworkable and the interface is anyway close to being 'so difficult to use that you don't want to bother'!
It is not obvious to me how you can just:
Play, or
Play random selection, or
Play Album, or
Play this/that artist.
You must go down to track level before you can play anything!

So, most of the problems/gripes are with the interface in ALL respects.

But for the interface, it would be EXCELLENT

Sony Playstation 3 (40 GB) Console with 6 games
Review created: 04/07/08
by:

I think the gaming quality of this product is much better than the other consoles sony have done and also any other console out there on the market. I think the vast majority of games available are superb as it is a newish console. I rate this console as the best so far. Will take some beating. I have nothing that I dislike about it and the online gaming is superb.

  Sony PS3 40Gb
Review created: 03/07/08
by:

Operating system is smooth and sleek, however some of the game graphics are not as smooth as the Xbox 360. Sony should have updated the controller with analogue triggers not just buttons.

After only 5 weeks, about 2 hours gaming and watching one (yes 1) BD movie the machine failed terminally. Sony recognised the fault but where not helpful when ebay was mentioned even though my PS3 was brand new and sealed! So ebay buyers be warned. They did eventually agree to a refurb replacement for the now very common fault of the laser unit failing.

Overall a fantastic Blu-ray disc player but an average console.

  Sony PS3 and Folding@Home
Review created: 01/07/08
by:

The PS3 is a very fast processor for the Folding@Home (F@H) distributed processing research projects. You can purchase a "Faulty" PS3 for much less than a fully operational one and there is a high probability that it will work fine for F@H.

To be fair, the actual hardware was never really going to be in much doubt. And after your first few hours in the company of the PlayStation 3, you're likely to be impressed.

Several initial thoughts went through my head. Firstly, the machine's really quite heavy. Secondly, aesthetically, it's really quite smart. And thirdly, and surprisingly, is that given the immense processing grunt under its glossy, buffed-up exterior, it's very quiet in operation. It certainly puts the Xbox 360 in the shade in that department, I know, I now have both.

When I switched on for the first time, following as simple a connection procedure as you'd expect with a games console, I signed up for the PlayStation Network and downloaded an advised, but not compulsory, update. This involved us getting the machine online, which was thankfully straightforward. A built-in wireless receiver or the Ethernet port at the back are your two choices, and we tried both, finding the machine adapted to either at breakneck speed. It's an extra £50 for the xbox 360 wireless connector...

The download and application of the upgrade took care of the first five minutes or so, but eventually we got to spend some time with the browser interface. This bears striking similarities to the one Sony employed with the PSP, and given that the two machines have a degree of interoperability, that's perhaps unsurprising.

It was interesting to note, going through the menu, just how Sony has made it easy to support elements you'd usually not expect it to be so welcoming of. The option for an OS install took us aback, and we were pleased to see the Folding@Home client built in too. But on top of that, the likes of keyboards, mice, Web-cams and such like - all of which can hook up via the assorted USB ports - are very easy to add.

Media support is well-rounded, too. That 40GB hard drive inside the machine can be filled with music files, for instance, and several codecs are supported. Likewise, there's Blu-ray and DVD playback. The former - the reason why the machine is so over deadline and so over budget - actually turns out to be a bit of a trump card. While we've not had the pleasure of many Blu-ray players, we're informed by colleagues who have that the PS3 is one of the finest, if not the very best, Blu-ray disc playback device on the market, to the point where many are picking up the PS3 for precisely that reason, rather than for its gaming prowess. It's aided - again, for the time being scoring a point over its Microsoft-produced rival - by the native inclusion of HDMI, meaning full 1080p output is well within the realms of the console (a new model of the Xbox 360 is expected to add this feature shortly).

But it's the games which ultimately will be the biggest influence in the rise or fall of the machine. But there's little doubt that the PS3 is capable of some incredibly impressive-looking games. Sony's track record should ensure that the shortage isn't a long-term one. There's also, of course, Sony's equivalent to Xbox Live Arcade, whereby games can be bought and downloaded onto the console online. A free game was available at launch and you can expect lots more, for sub-£10 price tags, in the future.

  Playstation 3 (PS3)
Review created: 24/06/08

This thing is fantastic, from the sexy sheen on the black case as you take it out of the box, til the moment your in a game smashing some skulls!

The PS3 is a beautiful machine, it looks sleek and the reset/power button, and the eject button are both touch sensitive and integrated as to make the PS3 look even better.

The machine is extremely easy to set up, although it does take a little time to download updates, but the machine does it for you so the less tech-haeded among us would have no problem whatsoever!

The XMB (the interactive menu used by the PS3) Is also easy to access and fairly intuitive. I don't see any problems arising out of using this, and it allows you to access media from your harddrive or computer, music, settings, the playstation network (PSN) aswell as games.

The PSN us a good feature of the PS3. It is free to sign up and use and it allows you to download a variety of things from sony's store such as game/movie trailers and demos. It also provides a basis for purchasing certain games and downloadable content for games you already own.

The PSN also allows you to make friends that you can chat to, and invite them to play your favourite games online with you.

Loading up games is also fairly easy. Just pop the disc in, let the install take place, then youre ready to go! Even a person that has never owned a console will be able to use this as it is so simple!

The games ive played so far are GTA4 and MGS4. Both of these games having cracking gameplay and stories, but for me, MGS4 pulls out ahead, using the PS3 to the best of its ability and showing off seom truely next gen potential.

The PS3, for me, was an ideal purchase. I have never looked back on it, and never will.

  Playstation 3 40gb

If you are a bit adventurous with your gaming hardware the PS3 will not dissapoint.

1) It's a good gaming platform equal of anything on the market both in terms of graphics and in terms of games available. It is also not at the top of its game yet, with the Cell processor still not really pushed to its limits and Blu Ray will allow for larger games as PS3 games currently are no where near fill up a disk.

2) The online network seems to be vibrant with lots of gaming oportunities (not charged for the service like XboxLive. Sure, there are some functions that Xbox Live delivers better, but they've had years to get it right, so I would hope it was good. It only requires Sony to write some code in order to remove the kinks in the PS3 online experience.

3) It connects with your PC (Set up as a media centre)to allow you to listen to your music, watch videos and look at your photograph (still a little work needing done on this). Later this year the PS3 will allow you to recieve and record digital TV broadcasts onto the PS3 hard disk. It looks like there will be download on demand services (TV & Films) coming up as well.

4) Talking about item (3), it's a breaze to upgrade your hard disk - I now have a 320Mb and it took about 30 minutes, including figuring out what to do.

5) Another evenings work and I had the basis of a Linux computer operating system installed an fully configured with Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, a web camera and microphone, wireless networking, email and a 'Skype' like application all configured and running on my HD TV. Add to that USB hard disk with 1TeraByte of space (Less than £150) and you have a moderate specification desktop PC. Have not tried playing Windows games on it yet (I think that Sony have placed limitations on accessing the graphics accelerator on a Linux PS3), but otherwise it does everything my desktop requires (Desktop Publishing, Editing and managing Photographs, CAD, database stuff, webserver, ftp, Email, VOIP, instant messaging, surfing the web, capture/basic video edit, docking bluetooth gizmos with the PS3, backup restore file systems). I've tried it all and it all works (ok, possibly more than 1 evening set up for everything).

6)When you can record TV on you PS3 later this year, U can connect a PSP to the system via the internet and watch your recorded progams anywhere in the world on the PSP (good for those boring business trips in nasty hotels when it's raining outside and the boss won't splurg for payTV).

7)Oh, did I say that it plays BluRay movies.

8)Basically, this box looks to be close to replacing 3 or 4 electronic boxes in your living room/study (not quite there yet), as well as playing games with it.

9) I'm sure I have not found out about all the things you can do with a PS3.

Way impressive if it all comes off in a user friendly way. Can't see the Xbox360 competing with that lot for long. I had to buy another so that my son can get his back.

PS. I'm not knocking the Xbox360 in any way. My sons best mate has one and they both enjoy playing with either games consoles to the same extent, so I reckon they must both currently be equally good as game consoles.
