The device fits comfortably in the hands. Its layout, with control buttons on the right and a directional control pad and "analog" pad on the left, means it should be instantly familiar to anyone who has played a PlayStation or PlayStation 2.
The display is sharp and crisp and the handful of games released Sunday make good use of the bright, 4.3-inch widescreen LCD, with graphics that sometimes seem to glow. It also responds quickly to commands, and I didn't notice any glitches or problems with the images displayed.
If I had to come up with a criticism of the hardware it would probably be its weight. At almost 10 ounces (including the battery), the device feels a little on the heavy side at first, although during play I didn't notice the weight very much.
One of the most common questions about the device has been about its battery life. This surfaced after representatives at the Sony booth at the Tokyo Game Show said they were getting about 2 hours of use from a full charge. Sony later said the battery life should be between 4 hours and 5 hours.
Based on my early tests, Sony's estimate of 4 to 5 hours seems closer to the mark. With the battery inserted straight out of the box with only its residual charge, the unit easily lasted through 2 hours of game play. After a full charge, the battery meter in the PSP indicated 5 hours and 36 minutes remaining.
The first time you switch on the device it asks for basic information such as the time, date, and time zone. The system browser uses Sony's cross-media bar interface, which arranges menu options in rows and columns and is very easy to navigate. A nice feature is that the background of the system browser changes color with the date. December is red, and in coming months it will cycle through silver, yellow, light green, pink, green, purple, light blue, dark blue, dark purple, dark yellow, and brown.

The system settings have their own menu and there are also main menus for games, movies, audio, and photos. Currently, those last three work only with content stored on a Memory Stick, but Sony plans to release audio and video content on discs at a later date.

The Memory Stick appears as a USB mass storage device and so should work with almost any modern operating system. The games really showed off the PSP's graphics, which appeared better than anything released on a handheld console to date. The Sony PSP is a much admired handheld console, and I do not dare to defy this. It is excellent, and so it is in its own world, enjoying no competition from fellow games console makers such as Microsoft and Nintendo.
Nintendo tried to beat Sony with the PSP with their DS, but have unfortunately not got even close. The graphics of the puny system are not comparable to Sony's masterpiece, and the games seem a little too childish, with kids' favourites like Mario and Zelda. So, no competition offered by Nintendo.
On to the console itself. The PSP fits well in the palm of your hand, and it is just wonderful when you get the console and admire the beautiful 4.3" screen. It is the largest, by far, on the market, and will give an unmissable, gorgeous feel to your favourite games like Ridge Racer and Tekken. The overall gaming experience is just fabulous. And, the games library of the PSP is generous. It includes over 100 games and has favourites like Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories and Tekken: Dark Resurrection. Also, to add to this, Metal Gear Solid is soon going to be released and the gaming industry has high, fine expectations.
There are just so many things you can do with a PSP:
1) Listen to music when travelling. I have found the PSP's in-line remote (included in value pack) very useful when listening to music, so that you can put your PSP, on hold (lock) in the pouch included in the value pack, and hear your favourite tunes and navigate through your collection. I have, of course, purchased a 1gb memory stick and think this an essential if you wish to have music on your console.
2) Watch movies on the go. I always have one or two movies on my 1gb memory stick when I'm travelling, and watch them on the gorgeous 4.3" LCD Screen. Also, I find that I can watch movies without interruption, unlike when I'm watching DVDs at home! Also, even though Sony has UMD Movies, they are quite expensive (£7.99) and consume more battery life.
3) Browse the Internet. The PSP, with its latest update, has a built-in Internet browser and I frequently browse the web with my wireless home network. It is really innovative and shows how feature-packed the PSP really is.
4) Play games. Of course, the main feature of the PSP is playing games. I own a copy of Tekken: Dark Resurrection, and I have not found any faults with it. It is astonishing, graphically as well as in gameplay. It is very smooth and makes me proud to own a PSP. I also own GTA: Liberty City Stories and I am still wondering how they have managed to get a full GTA game on a handheld like the PSP.
Now onto other things to commend Sony on:
Once I dropped my PSP from about 4-5 feet from my bed. I was worried that it might be all over, as the PSP is known to be a delicate thing, but luckily it survived. So Sony is to be highly commended on the PSP's excellent build quality.
The battery life of the gadget is fairly large, ranging from about 12 hours when listening to music to about 4 when playing games. Also, when watching movies from UMD, it consumes much more battery life than when watching them from memory stick.
To conclude, the PSP is an excellent gadget.
It has no competition on the market.
It is extremely well built.
It has lots of features.
And overall it is very well crafted, and is very good value for money.
The PSP is great if you are looking for a sleek, portable gadget with lots of features that you wouldn't expect for the price.

psp consolethis is one of the best hand held games consoles made and it does so much more than just play games.by adding memory cards you can add larger memory so you can store game saves, all your music and watch films mp4 or umd and play multi player with no wires . browse the web with the wifi . so i think sony will always be the biggest in the console markets with great consoles like this and the ps3

My one doesnt seem to have a usable phone and didnt have a camera on it! I have had it for two days and still cant get a ring tone. The games system works well as does the film capability, but as a phone its useless- BEWARE!

PSP is amazing would highley recommend.
I brought it for the game final fantasy VII crisis core as i am a huge final fantasy fan.
The game is amazing, and the console is a big hitter, :)
However the seller i brought from was poor, failed to mention damages.
Perhaps it is safer to buy brand new from the shops.

the psp was in top condition but unfortunately not mentioned by the seller that the psp was the japanese version so the buttons work in reverse,not a problem though just confused my little boy but he soon got used to it and the instructions are in japanese so my advice is to ask if its the english version.

Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP) ConsoleCannot comment on this particular PSP because I never received it. The moment I won the seller informed me it was damaged (after I had sent a Paypal payment). Took a few days to get a full refund as the seller sent me a Papal refund minus Paypal fees (both seller and buyers). I refunded the sellers payment and requested a full refund, which I eventually got. Got a cheaper PSP from Cash Converters in the end and really pleased with it.
