Growing up in the 1950's and 60's, Frank Sinatra was an old square and of very little interest to a teenage fan of Top Of The Pops. But tastes develop as one matures and I recall once reading that Songs For Swingin' Lovers was a highly memorable album, recorded at Frank's peak and that Nelson Riddle excelled with the backing arrangements. I finally purchased this album and everything I had read and heard is true. OK, his later hits are not there, but Frank's phrasing and vocal touches are as sublime as a vocalist can get. Nelson Riddle provides the perfect backing and it is difficult to imagine that this 'swing' album will ever be bettered. Robbie Williams and others have had a game stab at such swing albums, and done rather well. But if you want the consumate professionalism that only the combination of Frank Sinatra and Nelson Riddle can supply - this is probably the only 'swing' album you will ever need. Fifty years after being recorded it still sounds absolutely fantastic. It has become a firm favourite of mine - and anyone of taste who wants to experience the ultimate swing album will not be disappointed by Songs For Swingin' Lovers.
I purchased this title as a vinyl LP back in 1955. Its now nearly worn through and I am reluctant to play it, scratches and all!! But its a classic, Sinatra at his scintillating best and one of the great American big Swing bands. For my generation a must. For younger generations, listen to songs with proper words, you might get to like it.
Had a copy but lost it so decided to re buy it on ebay - makes great listening ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I bought this for my husband who likes the whole 50's big band sound with ol' Frankie belting them out. I didnt think this was loud or razzamatazzy enough. I would have liked more really big belting sounds - but the songs were familiar and his voice was still fantastic.
i bought this album as a long playing record some 25 years ago and loved it. With the decline of record players and the convenience of CD, I decided that the time had arrived to concentrate on CDs. This particular one was listed on Ebay at a very reasonable price and I therefore bought it. I doubt that I could have got a better price at a second-hand CD shop. It was posted quickly and was in excellent condition. I gave the seller a "positive" and would buy from him again.
This is Frank giving the best of performances. With Nelson Riddle orchestrating, this CD is a must have for Sinatra lovers and for anyone else who does not know his work. All time top 100 Album. Bought it so I could listen in the car, and it takes me back some good party days.
