I decided to buy it after hearing that Micahel Caine and Jude Law had remade this classic, but like the "Get Carter" remake, it was a bit of a dissapointment. However, it is a real thought proviking thriller as each character plays off against the other in a game of cat and mouse that is all to believable a scenario now as it was originally. The movie itself is a shining example of the axiom "alls fair in love and war", and on the whole I enjoyed it.
I made an effort to see this at the cinema, being a fan of the play.
Caine was superb, Law excellent but the screenplay creaked, which was a pity.
The set was inspired and the music atmospheric.
However, I didn't think it deserved the panning it received from the critics. The original screenplay was dated and needed modernising, but it could have been better, which is a tragedy given that Pinter was at the helm. You were left with the feeling that the script had left the table before the final draft had been completed.
Without a doubt one of the worst movies i have ever saw .
