A Masterpiece
Andy Hamilton will celebrate his 90th birthday in March 2008 and this was his debut album - made at the age of 72 after a lifetime as a jazz musician. He put his first band together in Jamaica in 1928, was music director for Errol Flynn in the 1940's and came to Birmingham in 1949.
He was "spotted" by Jazz legend Val Wilmer at his 70yj birthday gig and one thing led to another and he got a record deal with World Circuit under the guidance of Nick Gold.
Silvershine features a mix of Hamiltons own compositions, up tempo good time classic calypso jazz mixed with his own favourite standards.
Mick Hucknall from Simply Red provides the vocals and the stellar cast of musicians includes legend David Murray on two track and in sparkling form.
The album won awards around the world and was described as a masterpiece in The Times and was one of Sony's 50 albums of the year in 1991.
The album started a new life for Hamilton who has guestwsd at WOMAD, St Lucia, Cape Town, Madrid, Paris and Milan.
He still runs his own jazz club in Bearwood, Birmingham and teaches and plays every day.
This is a wonderful album - with a great story behind it.
