There are no good guys in this film, but you do find yourself being on the side of a lovable ex-villain(Ray Winstone)when two unsavoury characters from his past-intend to spoil his idyllic life. Ian McShane gives a convincing performance of a nasty piece of work----- but that's nothing compared to Ben Kinsley as Don Logan-a foul-mouthed gangster which has to be seen to be believed (Ghandi on Acid!!!!!) A great film which shows that crime doesn't pay-unless you have change for a twenty puond note!
I bought this DVD as a recomendation from a friend and I must say, I was not dissapointed. Not your typical gangster flick, but contains the same grit and edge as any other. The acting is very believeable, Ray Winstone's performance is good, but its his supporting actor Ben Kingsley that takes this film from been a good one to an excellent one.
Besides being a great semi-comedic heist movie, there is a lot else here besides. In complete contast to the "Oceans X" or "Lock Stock" genre, here is a movie that examines just how far people are willing to demean themselves to achieve their' aims and protect their' own. And as a counterpoint to that, we are served up with a performance from Ben Kingsley of a character who knows no bounds whatsoever. For me, the best British gang flick since Get Carter. "What do you mean, ""No?!""
Ben Kingsley is a relevation in this film, playing a sinister gangster with flair. Ray Winstone is his usual suave self and is, as always, totally watchable. One of the best British gangster films in years.
very good british film. Having Ray Winston in it helped. He's scrummy. Really enjoyed its humor and everything about. Seen it before but all of it. To see it right through was brill. Would recommend to anyone aged 18 or over. Fantastic buy.
The DVD is good quality, with extra and deleted scenes.I`d seen part of the film on TV and decided I`d like to own a copy as it was an intelligent film with fine actors.
Quite possibly one of the most sexiest British films in recent years. Ben Kingsly and Ray Winstone lead a profound cast in this offshore Gangster release. Not for the faith hearted, the use of two 4-letter words is all justified!
Reason for me buying film was saw it on television not long before i bought it,and my daughter loves Ray Winston who is a superb actor in all his films, don't like about film is there is so much swearing but thats what is expected from gangster sort of film but overall a wicked class A film that never gets borin............
From the cover this looks like another British gansgter flick in the style of Lock, Stock... However, from the opening scene of a sutan lotion covered Ray Winstone reclining next to his pool, you know that you're in for something a little classier and also far better.
Whereas most gangster films focus on the young proclaimers, themselves really no better than chavs, Sexy Beast focuses on the elder element of the criminal underworld; the one that has made its money and now lives abroad where the only fear is that of a change in extradition treaty.
A simple and undemanding plot is brought to life by an excellent performance by Ray Winstone but the best performance is kept for Ben Kingsley. Ahh, you see him and think 'it's Gandhi' until he opens his mouth and reveals the sociopathic and near psychopathic character of Don Logan.
Logan wants Gary (Winstone) to come back to England for one last job. Except Gary is enjoying Spain and really doesn't want to give up his comfortable existence. What follows is a brutal yet hilarious power struggle between two members of the old school.
It is worth watching for Kingsley's performance alone as it is the antithesis of any role you've seen him as before. The rest of the cast get a sharp and punchy script and deliver great supporting roles.
One word of warning; once you've seen it, you may well find yourself unable to sit and watch the tv unless you are wearing just your y-fronts.
Ray Winstone stars as an former villain who has taken early retirement out in the Costa del Sol. Now firmly settled with his missus he spends his days peacefully roasting by the pool. Out of the blue though he is blasted by a serious face from his nefarious past (Ben Kingsley) a fellow gangster who is, basically, pyschotic. Kingsley, as Don Logan, plays a blinder. He is rude, crude and thoroughly unpleasant to know. He pushes Winstone right to the edge, trying to force the former gangsters hand into joining him on one last big job back home in London.
This is a movie that has a decent plot that is outlined from the beginning. No twists, no turns, no clever stuff (well only a bit). So you just get to sit back and enjoy the class character acting from Winstone, Kingsley and Ian McShane. With blue dialogue this is a violent, brutal and realistic movie. A great story and a very good film.
Having last seen Ben Kingsley protraying a Jewish accountant persecuted during the holocaust, I could not believe the transformation into Don Logan, a psychopathic East End gangster sent out to Spain to encourage Ray Winstone into carrying out one last robbery. Humourous and dramatic, this film is extremely watchable as long as you can cope with the odd profanity - Ben Kingsley's opening line is a pearl. Although obviously shot on a low budget by Channel 4, the acting and the storyline transform this film, for me at least, into a classic. Highly watchable and often quoted by me when I'm basking under the Spanish sun on my annual holidays to the Costs Brava.
I first saw this film on a long haul flight and this made a long journey very enjoyable. The characters are believable and a gem of a performance from Ray Winston, at his best and from Amanda Redman as his wife. The language is blue but, in my opinion, required altho' how this was allowed to be seen on a plane is still confusing me. This is the sort of escapism that can be watched over again.Perhaps 'Sexy Beast 2' should be made. All in all a very good English 'gangster' film.
In a gangster caper film like only the British can make, a real gathering together of some great British character actors come together to give the viewing public this little cracker of a film. Gal Dove is your archetypal ex-con, now living the life of Riley on the Costa del Crime in Spain. Accompanied by his ex-porn star wife, Deedee, Gal’s life consists of long lazy days by his pool in his luxury villa, and long alcohol filled evenings with his wife and their best friends. Not even the unexpected bombshell of a boulder falling into the pool can dent his joy at his “retirement”
Mind you the boulder in the pool is nothing compared to the real bombshell that befalls the Doves as they discover the one of Gal’s old mobster “friends” is coming to attempt to recruit Gal for “one last job” back in London. When Don Logan does burst onto the scene, all thoughts of turning this job down are forced from Gal’s mind as he is browbeaten into agreeing to the job. That’s not to say Don gets it all his own way though.
The “job” is a audacious attempt to rob a bank’s security boxes by drilling into the safe room from the Turkish Baths which are next door. Masterminded by Teddy Bass, he has befriended the manager of the bank and no doubt got some inside information.
Ray Winstone is more well known for his screaming madmen than his more measured reflective characters, but here he turns in a great play as the out of condition and reluctant Gal. The role of psychotic loony has been taken by Ben Kingsley who literally grabs any scene he appears in and makes one of the most convincing and frightening head-cases to have ever graced the screen. There’s great support from the lovely Amanda Redman as Deedee and Ian McShane also appears as the gangster boss Teddy Bass.
The only complaint I do have with the film, is that at only 83 minutes or so, it’s a little on the short side. I could have easily watched another ½ hour of these fun and games, so entertaining were they.
Sit down and watch this film at night, alone in a dark room. Listen carefully to every word. If you've never heard or seen any of the actors in this film before, you'll enjoy it doubly. If you've heard of Sir Ben Kingsley, it's one of his best performances; far better even than Shindlers List.
Be prepared for one of the best gangster films you'll ever see.
Oh,.. and by the way, it's entirely an English production.
