You know from the opening song that this is fickle Dylan, so if you are expecting classic Zimmerman be prepared to be dissapointed but keep an open mind as there are top class songs aplenty.Overall its liking running up a hill until you get to the top you dont how far the journey is.
By Dylan's own admission, this album was a joke. He knew it was not good to put it politely, but he also knew that he had 'New Morning' coming out (4 months later). In Dylan's enforced absence due to a mishap on a Triumph Bonneville, a load of bootlegs of new stuff had been kicking around. Also, 'fans' had been besieging his house, even after moving. Almost deified, he was regarded as the leader of the 'Woodstock Nation'. He implied the he wanted to sabotage this status, but the record company view was probably to just get something out to pacify the waiting crowd. No. 1 in the UK shows the public were willing and waiting. It's not entirely second rate, check out 'Copper Kettle'. But really for fans or collectors.
It seems somewhat fashionable in the music press to pan this album. Mind you, when it was released they were probably hoping for another 'Blonde on Blonde' magnum opus... Admittedly this isn't a masterwork, its Dylan trying to debunk his own legendary status. He acheives this by producing an album, which whilst not as deep and meaningful as earlier efforts, is none the less very melodious and enjoyable. This is an album I love to put on in the background and relax to, its laidback charm is likely to soon weave its magic on you too. Give it a try!
