As U.S. troops storm the beaches of Normandy, three brothers lie dead on the battlefield, with a fourth trapped behind enemy lines. Ranger captain Tom Hanks and seven men are tasked with penetrating German-held territory and bringing the boy home. Steven Spielberg and cinematographer Janusz Kaminski paint a harrowing picture of the price of war and heroism -- one that netted them Oscars for Best Director and Best Cinematography, respectively

The best film of all time full stop.

I have always loved war films and only ever critised them for not having a good story line, but this film has some of the best scenes, like the one at the end when they are defending the bridge, or the D-Day landings, very gory and very realistic. This is another piece of fine work from director Steven Spielberg. The film follows the exploits of a small platoon of men fighing thier way through from the D-Dya landings and occupied france to find a soldier parachuted behind enemy lines who has lost 4 of his brothers, the passion and emotion brought out in this film made even me even feel like crying each time on of the squad got killed, and yet show a spark of hope when they step onto the battlefield each time. Tom Hanks shows in this movie why he is possibly one of the best actors of all time.

Tom Hanks is great in this film. Starting with the D-day landings, and evolving into a struggle to find one man in order to bring him home. How many men are worth it, in order to get hold of Ryan, watch and find out.

Tom Hanks at his best in this WW2 film. The opening sequence on the beach sets the scene for some both the action and acting.

All of todays kids should watch this film to truly see the effect of war and how it is not to be glamatised

This should cool off the Rambo wannabes
Review created: 07/06/08

The opening beach assault sequences were the most violent, realistic, and upsetting filming I've ever seen; looked as though the thing was actual combat footage. The shushing noises of rounds cutting through the air was the most chilling part of all. Perfect portrayal of the insane stupidity of war and the anguish of all who enter this most foolish of enterprises. A must see.

This film brings home the reallty of the horrors of war, it is well made a great story line and is an emotional film, i have a tear at the start and the end. A well acted film and the beach scenes at the beginning are a true picture of what happened, as i have spoken to people who were there on D-Day.The sacrifice these people made were for us so that we and people in the future can lead the lives we live today and no one should forget that regardless of what side you were on. A great film for war film enthusiasts.

A good war movie, if not one of the best.
Review created: 15/04/08

One of Tom hank's (and vin diesal's) best movie/s. The characters and story are well developed and acted out well. The explosives and action scenes are done well, though If you are looking for a pure action movie this is not it, though there may be enough to keep you content.

Personally i think the very beginning and end are a bit naff. IE the old bloke who is coming with his family to the grave, i am not sure how to describe it, but it may of been done better with just him and his wife instead of a family outing. This is on-top of the the very last conversation between tom hanks and privet Ryan which again just did not seem done well.

However that is mostly me being nit-picky. A very good movie.

Excellent film! Shocking, thought provoking evocative and at times gory. All in all a well rounded WW2 film that has just about everything. If you wish to taste the sand and sea of Bloody Omaha beach then you could not go far wrong with this recreation. I have nothing but the utmost respect for the `real veterans` who strove through this appalling morass of human suffering and fortitude.
Enjoy the Film but read the book first` D-Day`

This is an all time classic. I decided to buy it as I'd just bought a new 42" tv and surround sound. The scenes from the beach landing are awesome. Anybody with a decent surround sound will love this film

The opening five minutes of this film should be shown to anyone studying the Second World War, and to anyone who feels that dying for their country is worthwhile.

  Saving Private Ryan DVD
Review created: 24/02/08

Since its release in 1998, Steven Spielberg's D-Day drama Saving Private Ryan has become hugely influential: everything, from the opening sequence of Gladiator ("Saving Marcus Aurelius") to the marvellous 10-hour TV series Band of Brothers, has been made in its shadow. There have been many previous attempts to recreate the D-Day landings on screen (notably, the epic The Longest Day), but thanks to Spielberg's freewheeling hand-held camerawork, Ryan was the first time an audience really felt like they were there, storming up Omaha Beach in the face of withering enemy fire.

All time top 5 shortlist. No arguements....
Review created: 10/02/08

Some films just tend to stick in your mind as 1st class & this is one of the best ones for me.
From the graphic & no holes barred beach landing scene at the start of the film right through the end I was happy to have come across this film in my lifetime & will watch a few more times in the years to come.
Just one of those films where you ignore the reviews, subject matter etc & are completely moved by the experience.
A very happy viewer :-)

  Amazing opening scenes
Review created: 29/01/08
by:

I've never been in a war; I've never even been in the services; I wasn't even born until 10 years after WWII finished. However, the opening scenes of the D-Day landings in Saving Private Ryan are the most realistic and truly scary war scenes I've ever seen in any movie. My main reason for buying this movie was purely so that I could have those scenes in my collection.

The rest of the film is another over-sentimental look at "how America won the war", how they had poor discipline, and how much they supposedly cared for the little guy.

If you are interested in history and America's part in WWII then don't buy this movie. However, if you want a fun, sentimental 'girly movie' that the ladies will enjoy as much as if not more than the men, then this could be the film for you.

Get it for the right price and it's worth having just for the opening.

Step 2 : Try an advertiser's offer
Basically all you need to do in this step is complete one of the offers, this is where the freebie site make their money, if you complete an offer then the freebie site will recieve commission for it. So if you complete Coral which will only cost you £5 to complete, the freebie site gets £25 from Coral. The two best offers are Lovefilm Free DVD rental (rent two DVD's, keep them for about 2 days, send them back and then cancel the trial) and Coral (bet £5 on a sport). I would reccommend you do Coral as it credits in an hour and is really simple to do, Lovefilm however can become complicated and takes up to 2 weeks to credit! You can also try one of the other offers, most are gambling offers. Don't skip this step! You must complete this step to get your free iPhone!

Step 3 : Refer some friends
This part is a lot easier than it seems, especially now with free iPhone sites getting so popular. There's lots of people online who want a free iPhone too, so start referring them! You only need to get a few signups before you'll be finished. You can ask your friends or your online buddies. I already got a free PS3, Wii, and XBOX Elite without even having to ask my friends for help - there's lots of people online who want a free iPhone like you! One of the easiest ways to get a referral is to do a favour for a friend and ask them to sign up in return. That way, you both can get a free iPhone!

Basic rules
Don't break these rules! This is the only reason that you won't get your free iPhone, so make sure you follow these rules!

- One account per household - don't use a public computer to sign up!
- Use real information - this is a proven legitimate site and they will not give out your information.
- Only complete each offer once! You cannot complete the same offer again, even for different freebies.
- Don't try to cheat the system. This site has been proven legitimate, and they will catch you if you try to cheat. If you do everything legitimately, by following this guide, you will get a free iPhone!

Thats all, just follow my guide and you will have your free iPhone in no time.

Thank you.

Saving Private Ryan. The ultimate War movie
Review created: 11/01/08

This must rank as the most realistic war film ever made, from its gut churning start as the US soldiers are shot to pieces on the beach to its climactic tragic finish. The acting is first rate by every member of the cast. I was left with the feeling - how did these boys do what they did - they were not professional soldiers just ordinary youngsters thrown into this awful War. we owe them a debt forever.
