Based on a true story by Beverly Donofrio, 'Riding in Cars with Boys,'is an excellent film. It follows the struggles of a fifteen year old girl Beverly who suddenly finds herself pregnant and having to face up to the challenges that pregnancy, marriage and motherhood bring into her life. Drew Barrymore complete with a whole brunette look is good in the lead role as teenager Beverly whose foolish night of youthful passion leads to a future life of broken dreams, failed ambitions, a bad marriage and her difficulty in adapting to motherhood. These ingredients lead to her writing a book an autobiographical account about the circumstances and situations life has thrown at her. Far removed from the gloss of 'Charlie's Angels,'Never Been Kissed,'and 'The Wedding Singer,'Drew Barrymore displays such an amazing acting ability as she captures so well the teenage angst of Beverly and her rapid journey into adulthood and it's responsiblities. I was impressed at her playing the mother of a grown up son once her son had reached adulthood and was attending college it was a remarkable feat for an young actress. With a good supporting cast of actors such as James Woods, Lorraine Bracco, Brittany Murphy and Steve Zahn this is a film I would recommend to anyone to see whether you are a Drew fan or not. I can't wait to read the book now.
Watching Drew Barrymore through 20 years of life, from 15 year old teenager to 35 year old Mum is fascinating, and I am exactly a Barrymore fan. The story is simple, bright young girl has one night of passion with the wrong guy and from then on her life spirals out of control. Pregnant at 15 in the 60's and dealing with all the prejudice and watching her hopes and dreams evaporate. Marrying a total looser and sticking with him... well, the story could easily have gone into nightmare scenario, but instead it is uplifting and touching, following her holding on to her dreams, trying to be a good mother and not allways succeeding.
I found watching the features and interviews with the author on who's autobiography it was based adds a dimension to the film which is not often achieved. Life is truly stranger (fuller) than fiction, and this film is a testament to this. Great effort from everybody on the cast and crew to bring this story to the world.
i loved this film, i rented it and have been looking for over a year but couldnt find it. Drew barrymore is excellent. overall a very good film but probably not one for the boys!
I like Drew Barrymore films and this is no exception.
This is a heart-warming film (based on a true story) and shows how talented Drew Barrymore can be. Other actors in this film include James Woods and Brittany Murphy who are quite good actors and show it in this film.
Having watched this film a few times late at night, i decided that i might as well buy it! Its one of those easy to watch films - the plot is basic: young girl meets boy and ends up pregnant, forced into marriage by her father and girl feels disappointed by a life which she feels has been unfairly foisted upon her. The film follows her as she struggles to juggle motherhood and gain a scholarship to NYU. Drew Barrymore plays the unhappy, newly married, pregnant teen well. (Although when has Drew Barrymore NOT played teen angst well?!) She is supported by a great cast - Steve Zahn as Barrymores hapless husband and James Woods as her disappointed father. This film is based loosely on a true story - an autobiography by Beverly D'Onofrio.
Oscar material this may not be, but it is a good film for nights in when there is nothing on the telly!
