At the risk of annoying Queen fans the world over, it really never was this good again. I first discovered this neglected gem at the age of 14 when I heard 'Keep Yourself Alive' on Alan 'Fluff' Freeman's Saturday afternoon radio show. From this song right through to the instrumental embryo of 'Seven Seas Of Rye', it's a melodic pomp rock teat. Highly recommended.
I decided to buy the Queen I CD as it was one of the first albums that I bought on vinyl, and I have always felt that the stuff Queen done in the early days was their best stuff. The CD I received was in tip top condition. When I received this CD it made me realise how long ago it was that I bought this album in vinyl and this made me feel old.
It is difficult to judge the style of this album - the first one from Queen. It was released in 1973 after a few years recording it in studio 'downtime'. The sound is very 70s Glam Rock and is not for the hardcore rock fans.
It does, on the other hand, capture the range of Queen and the vocal capacities of Freddie Mercury. It doesn't contain any major hits and therefore, from a neutral point of view, do not expect anything familiar. Worth buying if you are into the style.
