This mid-1980s album was well received when it first appeared with even the NME giving it a good review. In many respects it picks up where Tug of War left off and offers solid production values with McCartney experimenting with recording technology and writing some catchy tunes along the way. Stand-out tracks would be: Strangehold, Talk More Talk, Only Love Remains, Press, Move Over Busker, However Absurd and It's Not True. It has all the typical McCartney melodies and mixture of ballads and rockers. I bought the original release in 1986 and was pleasantly surprised and most Macca fans will like this CD. And it prepares the way for the even better Flowers in the Dirt.
How can you dare criticise Paul McCartney? Even when writing below his best he can still achieve fantastic music. "Press to Play" may not be his best album but it does contain two of his best songs - "Only Love Remains" - a slow burner that reaches a terrific climax - and "Press" - a song I rate as good as anything he has ever written before. This CD contains two welcome bonus tracks - "Spies like us" and "Once upon a long ago". Oh! By the way - track 9 is "Angry". It's a rocker. Play it LOUD!
