Let me take you for a quick trip down memory lane...
The summer of 1986. I had just bought my first car, a rather nice looking but mechanically unsound Toyota Celica Fastback. My then girlfriend and me were heading off for a weekend under the canvas in Cleethorpes.
"West End Girls" and "Love Comes Quickly" had already given the Pet Shop Boys their first hits and “Opportunities” was in the charts.
Before we left we popped into Asda and bought Please by Pet Shop Boys on a tape cassette (remember those!) to listen to on the long journey from Suffolk to the Lincolnshire coast. We listened to the tape many times over that weekend. Sitting by the A1 waiting for the car to cool down, at a garage trying to find out why the car was using more oil than petrol and finally whilst cruising the night streets of Cleethorpes ;-)
In my opinion this album, the first of many Pet Shop Boys albums is their best work. Considering that it is 21 years old it does not sound that dated. It is worth buying just for the original version of "Suburbia", a less polished but ultimately better version that the single. Another of my favourites is "Tonight Is Forever".
My original tape still sits with all my other tapes in the loft. I am so glad that I was able to get this forgotten CD from ebay. Not just for the tunes but also the memories of '86. Thanks Neil & Chris
