Philips DVDR3460H (250 GB) DVD Recorder / HDD Recorder

Well worth the money- good Philps product..... but.

Gripes include ..

records 400hrs in very low quality for any action footage, 350hrs at a more acceptable quality, but not in more than 6hr chunks if you just press record while watching a channel or 24hrs max chunks if you set it up on a timer slot that has a maximum of 23.59 hours before the timer has to stop and start again- It doesn't let you just press record 400 (or 360)hrs easily and that's it- well, we've not found how you do that yet easily and no option to join bits of split video.

Can't easily switch off (if at all) the background record system that provides all the pause/ rewind live TV options and can mess up recordings if you try to use it while recording or have used it just before you record to HDD.

Overall quality is very good for the price apart from the lowest level and the DVDs produced play on almost anything with good menu editing.

Can become faulty on recorded hard drive recordings losing hours - usually from a glitch in the digital signal from weather or an electrical spike from something being turned off/on etc.. needs a electrical spike thingy.

Slow text editing as with most and no changing default text.

Doesn't make it clear how long a recording is on the hard drive on the main HDD menu. Needs it rather than some other less useful info it does show- just erased a 24hr minus 1 minute recording by mistake that looked like a 1 minute.

First of all, before i brought this , i was searching all over internet for something like this, but the price was over my budget.
When i saw this product on Ebay the price was perfect, first i was worried that might be something wrong with the product because the price was very good.
the size 250gb its even better.

I love that it has all the things i was looking for.

I can record something from tv and than edit the recording so i can take off all the ads that were shown in the middle of the program, so i can put it on the dvd without the ads.

I wanted something easy to work to either pause or record TV. This product does it all. Very easy to set up and operate and certainly a big plus over my old DVD recorder. I am amazed at what you get for the price

I bought this to record a specific TV series off Discovery Real Time.
I bought this product because its specification seemed to provide excellent value for money with a large (250GB) hard disk.
The machine is very quiet in use.

Unfortunately whilst I was able to record the TV series to HDD I could not then copy to DVD as the machine was telling me it was copy protected. I contacted Philips who said that Discovery Real Time was copy protected and it was not a fault on the machine.
I found the machine was not very good at finding Freeview channels (only located about 8 whereas the machine I replaced it with found 80+). Also, the signal to my plasma was not great resulting in background waviness on the image which was rather annoying.

I visited my friendly HiFi shop and they kindly loaned me a Pioneer unit which in fairness was much more expensive but gave a vastly superior picture and would copy the same recordings onto DVD without any problems.

Whilst I could possibly have lived without being able to burn the TV series to DVD, the wavey picture was too irritating so I have removed it from my system.

cheapest i could find was over £125.00 more than i was charged get in there quick before he has none left. well pleased.

Good replacement for my old video,Like the pause live tv, very handy if you need to take a break. Took a bit of time to work out on how to set it up, but got there in the end as you really do need to read the set up guide. Records all with no problems even sky.Records to dvd but you must remember to set the record speed to long play or the film will not fit on to a dvd.The unit is a bit wide but it is a well made unit and looks good. Dose not have HD.I like it but there are better, but i got this used from E Bay at a good price.
