A brilliant film. The original book by Ken Kesey remains one of my absolute favorite reads (incidently Mr Kesey was allegedly asked to provide the screenplay for the film but he experienced 'writers block' could not and so denounced the entire movie as a result which is a shame as the film really captures the essence of both the main characters and the story).
It is also tantamount to Nicholsons screen presence that he got the lead here as, in the book, his character is a red haired stocky Irishman, but he certainly made the role his own and he commands your attention whenever he is on screen.
Essentially it is the story of how one brawling troublemaker pleads insanity to escape a tough jail sentance and instead get sent to a 'cushy' mental institution. But what he finds, and eventually comes to realise, is that the hospital ward he is sent to is far far worse than any cell could be. The oppressive matron overseeing the show is fond of pyschological games and she runs things with a ruthless efficiency, keeping her 'patients' in check with loads of viscous mind games. Not suprisingly there is soon a battle of wills between Nicholsons troublemaker and the Matron. A fight for the hearts and minds of the other patients in the ward. Men who are in the Matrons charge but who have become Nicholson's friends.
A powerful and clever film that benefits from every character being played by a proficient and believable actor. A must see. And, even if seen, a definate must read as the film is good but the book is even better.
i love the movie remember seen it yesrs ago, and want to see it again.it was still good and funny in parts.i dont dislike anything about it.i brought it so i could own it.
This film is a true classic. Certainly one of my top ten best ever films. I always kept on to the kids that they need to watch proper films with great content, great acting and movies that will leave a lasting memory. All they ever watch are the American chic flick rubbish. We all sat down and watched this as a family late one night and it got tears, laughter and a lot of questions after it had finished. Maybe showing them about the real world is the way to go. This film did the trick and they now after watching my reamining other top ten films.
An Iconic film with Jack Nicholson at his best. Very funny, with Nicholson behaving badly, however becomes unstuck at the end.Throughly enjoyable watch.
I love this film it is a classic. Jack Nicholson is amazing and so charasmatic as always in this film. It will make you laugh so much with the antics that Jack and the other patients get up to. It will also make you cry to but you will have to see it to know what i mean. Well deserved awards which the film won and a pleasure to watch. Highly recommended to everyone. 5/5
Its funny to think that a film that is over 30 years old still seems so fresh in this day and age. This is the feeling i got when i watched this film, its superbly laid out and the cast consists of future legends who will make it big. The acting from all the cast was superb and totally believable. Jack Nicholson's role as R.P Murphy could only be acted out by him, there is a level of mentality required to play the role that other actors would have struggled to potray, it seems like it was second nature to him. Louise Fletchers role as nurse Ratched was superb, there were instances in the film when i wanted to punch her face in, her stone faced acting was unmistakable and will remain legendary.
whatever you may think about this movie, one thing is clear there is no mistaking the quality of the direction, writing and production work. i suggest you watch this film with an open mind, these days people expect films to meet certain criteria and if it doesnt they dismiss it as rubbish.
i think i should praise this cinematic bohemoth any further as its a love/hate film for some people. feeding you praises will only heighten your expectations and you will probably expect alot more out of the film. dont take my word for it, watch it because its Jack Nicholsons film, the same guy who has won 3 oscars including one for this film.
excellent film good actors , had me laughing in places , well worth a look , saw it years ago , watch it every now and again , its a film you can watch over and over , never get fed up with seeing it , they should make another 1 ,
this is the best film ever. jack Nicholson plays this at his best the film wouldn't be the same if he hadn't played the main character. i bought this film on dvd because my son had lost my previous one grrr?
Remebering this film when it first came out I decided to buy to see if it was as good as when I first watched it. I was not disappointed. A very young Jack Nicholson was superb in the leading role in a phsyciatric hospital. Now obviously a lot older, and wiser, as the years have passed I came to understand how times have changed in the treatment of patients with mental problems. Although still not perfect in this day and age the message of the film came across very strongly to me for that era. The film in places is quite amusing but at the same time rather sad, and the unexpected ending makes this film one well worth watching.
Jack Nicholson is, as usual, outstanding as the main character. This is a must-see film and should rank among your top 10 films to watch before you die. No need to go into the plot, as it unfolds in an uncomplicated way throughout the film. You are drawn nicely through a range of different emotions as the film draws to a fantastic climax. I won't spoil it for you, but you will be left with a tear in your eye...
I loved the dvd it was fantastic, i watched it years ago but i couldn't find it on dvd anywhere, so i was delighted when i found it on ebay, even more delighted when i won it and it came the day after i paid for it!!! BRILLIANT
When faced with a choice, is a night in watching an old film about a mental asylum even going to get a look in? It is if it's 'Cuckoos Nest'. This 'Oscar-winning' classic movie has lost nothing over time. Essential viewing for any Jack Nicholson fan. His portrayal of 'Murphy' in this darkly comic movie is arguably Nicholson's finest performance. Watch out for some now familiar faces in the supporting cast as well. At times it's emotional; often funny; and now provides an historical insight into the way mental illness was viewed and treated. But it's Jack's manic grin and expressive eyebrows, when he delivers his killer lines, that really carry a wonderful film.
Saw this film as a student after reading the book. Jack Nicholson stirs up a hornets nest in a mental hospital after escaping a jail sentence. He rebels against institutionalization. It is very funny and sad at the same time. A must see film.
what an excellent film! absolutely brilliant. jack nicholson was superb. A host of marvellous characters. Basically Jack nicholson winds up in an old style mental hospital (though probably not mad) and the story is about how he interacts with and inspires fellow patients and how his power struggle with the ward nurse plays itself out. Very powerful film. A must see for anyone interested in human nature.
It's an amazing film, an all time classic now. It's well thought out, several twists and quite devious but also very funny. I'd seen it before and decided it's just one film that I would like to have in the cupboard for the winter nights.it is old now, but unlike some, it is not ' corny '. I would advise everyone to see it. It could almost be based on a smattering of truth.
I bought this dvd as someone at work told me it was their favourite film. I also like Jack Nicholson. I throughly enjoyed the film and I'm not seling this as I'd like to watch it again sometime.
Fantastic movie with Jack Nicolson as the main character who plays a man who has social problems in the outside world which kept resulting in violence & then pleeds insain after being sent to prision. There he turns the ward upsidedown & insideout bring some of the charactors to life again & causing as much disruption as posible BUT not without paying the consequences a few times. Amazing charactors in this - & very well acted. As he trys to make plans for several escapes this film has a good twist in it about the members in the institute who he thinks have all been put in there for the same reason he has - until he finds out different!
I have heard about this movie since I was a kid but watched it only now at the ripe age of 35.It is extremely moving film about the fighting spirit of a man against the the suppresion of mental hospital which then transforms into a will to give others some normality.I still cannot stomach the way it ends, but after watching special features disc I know that it had to be so.Highly recommended.I think I'll start looking for the book now!
