This was Dire Straits last studio album and showed the signs of a difference in musical direction that Mark Knopfler has taken since he broke away from the other members of the Straits.I have read that he had become frustrated by the tag of "80s poodles",and had decided to release a more soulful meaningful album that at the time was dismissed as uncommercial and far less instantaneous as there previous 80s offerings. There was no "Brothers in arms"or "Sultans of swing" here on this album but what we do have is some beautifully crafted songs that make you examine your yourself and there is always the fantastic musicianship of Mark and his band. The pick of the tracks for me is the title track "On every street",a slow starter that has fantastic lyrics and a great mellow guitar solo, one of the best ever Dire straits singles, and there is also other great tracks such as "You And Your Friend"," Heavy Fuel" and " Calling Elvis".There are no "duff"tracks here but some of them will nearly send you too sleep as the pace does sometime become a bit labored. All in all as you can pick this cd up cheaply these days its well worth shelling out a couple of quid for a ver enjoyable 60ish minutes of enjoyment.Recommended
