Where does one begin to review North by Northwest? There has been so much talk over the years about this being Hitch and Grants best film that for me there is really no point in mentioning it again. What I would like to say is what a joy this film is to watch over and over and over again, with the performances, script and cinematography seemingly timeless. With this remastered DVD the colour explodes on to the screen with Saul Bass' 'ahead of it's time' 60's credit sequance. When people think of this movie they so often remember the 'crop dusting scene', and while Cary Grant standing alone on a desert highway (dressed in the finest grey flanel suit the screen has ever seen)is an iconic film moment; for me the real standout moment has to be his abduction from New York's Plaza Hotel and on to James Mason's hideaway. I went to New York last year and had drinks and dinner in the Plaza's oak room where this scene was filmed and it hasn't changed a bit! My favourite line? There are so many! I'll settle with; 'Not that I mind a slight case of abduction now and again but I had tickets for the theatre. To a show that I was looking forward to...' If you have ever considered watching a Cary Grant/Alfred Hitchcock film in the past but have decided to opt for what ever new action adventure/CGI mess that Hollywood have been offering in recent years then this is the perfect first step. Remember James Bond movies would look very differnt today if it wasn't for this masterpiece.
I'm sorry, but I have to disagree with the other reviewers, this is a flawed film from start to finish. Gary Grant cannot be taken seriously, James Mason is as static as the carved rocks of the Presidents up on the hill, and as for Eva Maria Saint one can only pity her after seeing her flawless performance in 'On the Waterfront' with Marlon Brando, having to allow the make up department disguise her out of all recognition to kill all feeling for facial expression that she undoughtably has under all that awful 60's mascara. As for Hitchcock's directing, it is hardly worthy of the 'great'master of suspense. Staid from beginning to end, bathed in lurid colour, washed out stage sets, shaky props, stilted action scenes with a climax worthy of a B movie, it must surly rate as one of his low points. The script is risible jumping from comic pastiche to implausible plot, and the scene in the suit standing by the bus stop on an open road, a slight hint of drama admittedly, but have you seen Thelma & Louise? now that was a wide open spaces location movie of extraordinary merit! North by Northwest? Ugh! Ugh!
This film is, without a doubt, one of Hitchcock's greatest ever productions. The balance of suspense, romance and an excellent plot make for one of the greatest films ever; a true masterpiece.
Hitchcock was always good value when atn his peak which lasted for a long time. He uses the thriller/chase story to good effect. Good acting from cary Grant. As a collecter of classic movies I like to appreciate the artistry that goes into creating a product that stands head and shoulders above other films.
I AM NOW OF AN AGE WHERE THE FILMS (MOVIES) I ONCE THOUGHT WERE STAID AND OLD-HAT HAVE BECOME 'CLASSICS.' THIS IS ONE OF THEM..... A TYPICAL HITCHCOCK FILM, WITH ALL OF HIS SIGNATURE INGREDIENTS, BUT A GOOD ONE TO WATCH ON A WET SATURDAY AFTERNOON - OR AN EVENING WHEN THERE'S NOTHING ON TV BUT 'REALITY' SHOWS! MEN, WOMEN, AND CHILDREN CAN WATCH THIS ONE - THERE ARE NO 'REAL NASTIES,' AND SOME THINGS ARE LEFT TO THE IMAGINATION....(EG: THE OLD-FASHIONED SEX SCENES.....) NONETHELESS THIS IS A MOST ENJOYABLE TALE, AND THAT IS WHY I PURCHASED THE FILM.
