A Night To Remember, And The Making Of ...

The Titanic sank on a mill pond calm sea, in the early hours of April 15th 1912. She was the largest, most luxurious ship man had ever built, her passenger list a who's who of the day, she carried the latest technology and she was only four days into her maiden voyage. Such was the impact of the tragedy of that night, that her name is still remembered almost ninety five years later, and a host of books and films have been made about her.
A Night To Remember is possibly the best film ever made on the Titanic. It was based on the 1955 book by Walter Lord, in which over sixty survivors and those involved in the Rescue were interviewed. The special advisor to the filming was Fourth Officer to the Titanic, and if you get to also see 'The Making Of A Night To Remember' documentary, you will find that it is packed with little incidents that actually did happen in real life. Being black & white and of a different era, it does not have the effects of the modern James Cameron spectacular, but it does by many accounts, have far more truth to the actual tragic events.
The film centers on Second Officer Lightoller, played by Kenneth More, and follows his view and actions through the disaster. It also features the main characters, the Captain, Owner, other crew and passengers, and their actions, and offers an explanation of the mystery ship, who's light's were visible in the distance during Titanic's final hours.
The main strength of the film for me, is that rather than a Hollywood special, seeking big special effects and over the top plot, A Night To Remember looks to encapsulate what it would have been like. The ship is mortally wounded, but at first no one can forsee the tragedy that is to come. Third class passengers play football with the ice on the decks, while first class passengers bid stewards add it to their drinks. Gentlemen play cards while the ladies refuse to wear the cumbersome life jackets, and get into the little boats. As the ship starts to list more and more, and the danger starts to become apparent, the story builds to it's enevitable conclusion. We all know whats going to happen, but become swept along with characters we've come to know, and how they live or die is very real.
If you have seen the modern films, or perhaps have heard of Titanic, but never really understood what has held it in so many peoples hearts. I recommend strongly this film, to me it succeeds where later attempts have failed ...

The best Titanic film of them all.
Review created: 09/05/08

I wont go into all the detail of the sinking and the date etc. because you have probably heard it all before. I wont, also, bore you by giving you a page full of facts about the storyline.
All I will say is that is still, by far, the best film ever made about sinking of RMS Titanic. Unlike Cameron's glitzy multi-million dollar blockbuster with a fake storyline, this film is based on facts and tells the true story. You don't have to endure the sound of Celine Dion doing an impersonation of a constipated cat either.
I'm not usually a fan of the 'Making of..' bonuses on DVD's, but the one on here is the best one I have seen. It's about an hour long and worth the price of the DVD alone.
Another thing about the DVD which is rarely shown with the information about it is that both the film and the 'Making of...' bonus can be viewed with English HOH subtitles which is a must for myself and people similar to me. It's rare for the bonuses on a DVD to have subtitles, which probably why I am not usually a fan of them.
If anyone honestly believes that Cameron's 'Titanic' is a better film than 'A Night To Remember', I can only say that they are just fans of Hollywood Blockbusters and Superstars, and have little interest in the actual story of Titanic.

Before I go, a word of advice. Don't get ripped off with price. The RRP is £19.99p but I have only ever seen it for sale at this price once. Some sellers on here sell DVD's at high prices which they have bought from cheap sources. Their sources are usually open to the public to use as well so you can buy at the prices they do (post free) and stop them ripping you off. This is why they ask for immediate payment so they have your money up front to buy the cheap copy and make a profit by doing nothing. They sometimes tell you that it is out of stock when the truth is, they never had is in stock in the first place. What they mean is, their cheap supplier is out of stock. I paid £4 for a new copy with free P&P. Do you you get my drift?

It's a great film.

A NIGHT TO REMEMBER/MAKING OF (DVD 1998) TITANIC
Review created: 21/04/08

This film has always been my favorite film relating to the Titantic which I have watched over and over again on an old recorded from the TV video. I wanted to get hold of it on DVD so that I can watch it over and over again.
The film I think stays with the story of what happened etc. and Kenneth More's part in getting the passengers away is fab. The steerage passengers and how they are shown not to be able to get up on to the other classes deck and be rescued is portrayed very well. The difference between class is also documented well in this film and how it was in the era of the Titantic. Great filming for the time the film was made and actually more realistic than the more modern films. One of the best moments is how the band played on and the hymn they played at the end stays with me from the first time I heard it years ago in the film.

I remeber seeing this film years ago and thought it to be a honest account of the Titanic disaster..it dates a bit now due to updated facts and of course Jim Cameron's epic.
I purchase this film from Ebay due to wanting to see the 'Extra's'that are included..ie The Making oF this film..and found it very enjoyable..but then Iv always been interested in the making of films..I use to go to Ruislip Lido as a boy and remembering that it was close to the public for some reason..now I know it was because a lot of the sinking ship scenes were filmed there..quite a surprise after all these years.
O.K this film is not up to Camerons version but its a very watchable film.
Give it a go.
Victor
