This album saw Madonna change yet again and adopt a serene cowboy-style image. This somewhat contradicted the style of the album which pretty much gives us an idea of what Madonna's next album "American Life" would also sound like. However, the original album is excellent and features mostly upbeat and up tempo songs which further developed Madonna's move toward European dance music but still retains a rocky, American edge.
Musically the album is different from what Madonna has done in the past. The album features dark electronic beats ("Impressive Instant"), folk guitars ("Don't Tell Me", "I Deserve It", "Gone") and the heavy use of the vocoder, which would appear again on later Madonna albums. Madonna also sang in French on the song "Paradise (Not For Me)" and in Spanish on the song "Lo Que Siente La Mujer" (which appears on the bonus disc).
However, this 2CD edition just seems like a pointless reissue, given that it was only reissued a year after the original. The second CD just contains remixes of the singles which could be found on the CD singles from the album. It might well have been a bonus for anyone new to Madonna who wanted the album, but the Madonna collectors who've probably bought this already, would've been annoyed because there's nothing new on it. This edition is just a bad example of the record company once again over-issuing Madonna formats to make money.
Four star rating for the music, and one point dropped for the pointlessness of this reissue.
