All in all this is a great little phone. When opened the earpiece actually goes to your ear and the microphone actually sits near your mouth. It's easy to use and you can personalise the shortcuts and side buttons, which is handy.

Great phone!

The mobile i bought has all the essentials required for a teenager, and the cost was very reasonable. I couldn't afford an expensive top of the range mobile for my daughter at short notice and it had all the requirements needed to use it

Motorola V635 - Beware the lack of spares !
Review created: 06/05/08

The V635 is generally a pretty good phone, with good set of features, however there is one problem area:
Whilst most obvious spares are available, the flexi cable between the flip and main body is not. This is quite a common failure point (as with many flip phones), typical symptoms are earpiece speaker or outer LCD not working.
If you get this problem then the phone is pretty useless, as the cable just isn't available any more.

  Motorola V635 Mobile Phone

It's quite a heavy phone as clamshells go, but it's one of the best specified camera phones available for that era 2006/7

The most welcome feature, apart from the new 1.2 megapixel camera with 8x digital zoom, camera light and camcorder capability is the addition of a TransFlash™ memory card in addition to the 5 Mbytes of internal memory. This really lets you make good use of the multimedia capabilities of the phone, especially the video recorder and MP3 player.

The V635 also upgrades the GPRS connection to a high-speed EDGE connection, which is ideal for downloading video and audio content.

Both the internal display and the camera are as good as anything you'll find on a mobile today. The external display isn't quite of the same quality - it's a CSTN display which can be difficult to read in bright sunlight, and has just 4k colours, but this is not unreasonable for a secondary display.

Well recommended if you are not looking for one of the most up-to-date flashiest phones on the market but a rugged, solid, dependable phone with all the extras normally found on higher priced mobile phones

I enjoyed using the V635, they have a quality feel you dont get on modern handsets. Although one of the penalties of this is they are rather hefty. Both being very thick and very heavy.
The clamshell design makes good use of space giving a large keypad, which along with texting interface makes this by far the best phone i have used for texting.

It lacks many of the features you take for granted on modern phones, and considering the phones size the main screen appears quite small (although in line with the norm). The camera is ok, but you have to hold it still, in good light and hope your target doesnt move.
The side buttons while handy, arent programmable and everyone that has these phones find they get pressed in your pockets, either making an embarsing beep or changing the phone to silent without you knowing!

Overall a quality feeling phone that is nice to own, but has a few short comings.

Solid Performance from a Solidly Built Handset
Review created: 25/07/07

When you have the Motorola V635 in your hand you know it. It is a substantial handset. It tips the scales at 134 grams, or almost 4.7 ounces. With a metal battery cover and metal front flip cover it feels solid because it is solid. The phone is not large. It is only marginally larger than the Motorola V188. It will fit nicely into cases used with a Nokia 6103 or 6131 as well as many similar form factor Motorola models. It is a sturdy, well built physical specimen.

It's tank-like build in no way hinders it performance. The V635 scrolls through menus quickly. The tactile feedback from the keypad is crisp and distinct. The keypad a is a bit more slick than some. It is in no way difficult to use as a result of this texture choice by Motorola. In contrast the non-numeric keys have a rough texture that makes for a nice touch. The Voice key on the side of the handset activates a bit too easily. It seems everytime I pick up the handset it wants to voice dial.

The true measure of a mobile handset is the ability to pick up and hold signals coupled with the quality of the speaker and microphone. It is here that the V635 really shines. It finds the signal in fringe areas and it holds on tenaciously. The speaker is loud and quite clear, about the clearest, most natural sound I've heard from a mobile handset. The microphone also produces a very clear and natural sound for the person at the other end.

In addition to telephone basics this handset has Bluetooth, an MP3 player, Internet browser, IM, E-mail, Java and the ability to handle up to a 2 gigabyte microSD card. This phone has a lot going for it. The MotoMixer is a fun way to produce new ringtones based upon the included pre-set MIDI patterns. It has voice notes and voice dialling. A calendar, calculator, datebook, alarm clock, two games and currency converter round out the software goodies.

The camera has 1.2 megapixels with zoom and video capability. It has supplementary illumination for dark scenes. The handset menu refers to it as a flash but actually it is a constant illumination rather than a flash.

That it is also is one of the nicest looking flip phones around doesn't hurt it either. This is one handset that doesn't have to show its age. The black center piece is easily removed and replaced with a new one. The front cover and battery door are also easily and cheaply available. For less than four pounds a person can renew the entire outside of the handset and never touch a tool. It's not that these are prone to scrapes and damage but if your phone starts to look a little ragged you can spruce it up and keep on going.

Many extras, solid basic performance and few weak areas make the V635 an ideal handset. Most of the units you find on eBay are unlocked, they work with any GSM carrier that operates on 850/900/1800/1900 bands because this is a quadband model. That means it will work in North America, South America as well as on the continent and in the UK.

  Motorola v635 clamshell
Review created: 10/07/07
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is probably one of the best clamshells ever by Motorola. After my own packed up on me over a year ago, I bought this one so I could recover the photos I had on my original memory card and keep it as a spare :-) The outer casing is quality, the camera brilliant, it's well laid out with an easy to use responsive keypad and menu system, which you can rearrange to suit yourself. All in all a cracking handset, they don't seem seem to make them like this anymore. Although 'sliders' seem to be IN they offer no screen protection like the clamshell. Hope there are more clamshells like this one to be brought out in the future!

  Motorola V635 Mobile Phone

After having a mobile phone exactly the same as this one before and knowing it could go wrong like my old one did, it was a gamble to buy one again. However, after putting the pro's and con's together and better the devil you know so to speak, I decided to choose this particular purchase owing to the condition and the fact it had been looked after and that I knew how it worked. My gamble paid off, I find this particular phone is everything I need and would recommend it to anyone who just wants a good phone with good extas and not all the top of the range gadgets although it does have many, ie, bluetooth, camera, colour screen and memory card. FANTASTIC.
