Good songs on a plastic disk that you insert into a machine that plays them. What else is there to say?

This is a brilliant concept album and provided the sound track for much of my later teens. Well worth a listen if you enjoy eighties music. Had the cassette but I have worn it out now. Excellent as a chill out backtrack

I am coming back to this album after not hearing it for a long long time. I was a real Marillion fan right from 1983 before they had a deal and I stuck with them until this album in live terms and only bought "Clutching at Straws" after. The "Hogarth" years have pretty much passed me by...

This is a remastered cd and boy does it sond better than the old mix! I find now that Fish's vocal quality grates a little but the lyrics are always wirth a listen. The two singles- Kayleigh and Lavender- are too familiar for me and I pass them by. The rest of the tracks tell the tale of Fish's torrid love life and I recall as a twenty something they were very resonant for me in my own life. It's on what was side two of the album ("Lords of the Backstage" onwards) that the album really comes to bear fruit. The fact that the band were spending a lot of time touring Eastern Europe really comes through in the lyrics and the music is much tougher and direct.

I always felt that the album peters out a little (many prog albums do after a big suite of songs), towards the end, but I was happy to take the ride again after all these years.

This was Fish and the band at their best - compares very well with Script. It was played on my turn table for months, when I first bought it. It also has Kayleigh, which entered the charts!
I've never liked the boy on the front cover, though. It looks a bit silly. Still, ignore the cover and enjoy the music...
