Very good film, reasonably historically accurate. The only thing that spoils it is Julia Roberts wooden acting and hideous Irish accent. On the whole a very good film.
brilliant film loved it, decided to buy it because i seen it as a child but have never been able to find the dvd in the shop. the dvd arrived in brilliant condition and also arrived very quickly compared with others that take forever to arrive!
liked story /cast/plus seller was selling in origonal condition.julia roberts/liam neeson/mr rickman/gabriel byrne who all make charachters come to life
Great movie and definitely depicts the horrible invasion of Britain into Ireland-finally a film with some truth. And in resonance to another review-Collins was not killed by his own side there was a spilt which cause civil war-didn’t they watch the movie!? Shows the fun loving character that is Michael. The love story was a bit unnecessary as it had nothing to do with the history Ireland which was disappointing but that’s movies for you. The movie also shows the horrific treatment of the Irish and shows that something needs to be done as there is still not peace in Ireland to this day. A must see for anyone interested in Irish/British history. Another negative was the part about the 1919 Rising-it portrayed the Irish as a few men who randomly tired to over throw the British and also it showed no women that did take past in the rising. However overall it gets your blood boiling which is good!
A brilliant film showing the other side of the coin. I did not realise that he was killed by his own side. The story of Michael Collins rise and fall from grace is filmed without any predudice, and really the recent peace in Ireland could have been achieved in the 1920s had people followed Michael Collins. A must film for anyone interested in the recent history of Northern Ireland
I ORDERED THIS FOR MY MOTHER IN LAW AS SHE HAS BEEN AFTER THIS FOR A WHILE AND COULD NOT FIND IT AND I FOUND IT ON EBAY AND PAYED A SMALL PRICE AND IT WAS FAST DELIVERY AND IN EXELLENT CONDITION
If you're looking for a highly entertaining action movie/thriller then look no further. If you're looking for an accurate depiction of the struggle for Irish independence, then you may be a little disappointed. Liam Neeson is superb as the eponymous hero and is ably supported by Aidan Quinn and the faultless Alan Rickman. However, I found Julia Roberts peculiarly lifeless which made the menage a trois sub plot devoid of chemistry or emotion.
The reputation of other figures from the period, such as Eamon De Valera (Rickman,)are shamelessly eroded in order to make Collins look like the sole architect of Irish indendence. The British or indeed Loyalist characters, are mostly one dimensional, a cameo by Charles Dance is an exception to this though.
Overall, this is a highly entertaining film, and as a starting point for understanding this period of Irish history and one of it's most important figures, it is a worthy and laudable production. Recommended.
