Technically magnolia is a terrible film. I say this because really magnolia has no storyline ,point or proper ending!.......if you're turned off already don't be! Allthough there are these flaws, magnolia, nonetheless is very entertaining and unpredictable. There are around 10 main characters but unlike in ensemble films like crash , pulp fiction and intermission they are linked together by the thinnest of threads.
Everyone plays their parts really well except for Julianne Moore who even though has an interesting character plays it very 1 dimensional. I was also dissapointed by William H Macy (playing a loser of course!)portrayal of 'whizz kid Donnie Smith' - a man who was a childhood genius and now who's lost it all. Macy wasn't bad but was nowhere as good as he was in Fargo. Jason Robards , Phillip Baker Hall and Phillip Seymour Hoffman (recently the winner of best actor oscar) all deliver excellent performances but undoubtedly the stars of the show are Tom Cruise as the oscar nominated, fast talking sex guru and John C Reilly as a good cop. Cruise started to shed his 1dimensional performances as the 'hotshot' in this movie and has gone to show us in Minority Report and The Last Of The Samurai that he can act. As for John C Reilly, he is probably the most underrated character actors of all time and although rarely the leading man, gives excellent performances in everything he's in.
Magnolia mightn't be for everyone but you should probably see it just to have an oppinion
Certainly Magnolia is an unusual film, but more to its credit for being so. Likewise not aiming for popularity, as a long and apparently, at first, disjointed storyline. However, besides the fine acting by most of the priamry cast, the film really focuses on what is possible however improbable. From that premise the underlying storyline challenges the whole question of child abuse. Depicting many of the different ways that ordinary living takes children for granted and exposes them to the various ways adults use children for their own agendas. A challenge to those in charge of children to look again and maybe consider their real intentions. A much needed and outstanding piece of work.
I like films that have a bit of a kick to them like Crash recent version and House of Fog and Sand,Magnolia fits into this catergory and does exactly what it says on the cover it entertains..there is a great all round cast headed by Mr Tom Cruise..
I am glad that i have this to my vast film collection it's a film that never ages and will always entertain.
A very long film with fantastic acting, meaningful plot points at every turn, and a lot of well knowns that you can't quite remember what else they've been in. Even Tom Cruise is fantastic in this film. Definitely worth watching once, even if you need lots of tea breaks in between the 3 hours.
I MISSED THIS MOVIE AT THE CINEMA AND DECIDED TO BUY AND WATCH THE DVD, AND WAS AMAZED AT HOW GOOD THIS FILM ACTUALLY IS, A POWERFUL PERFORMANCE FROM TOM CRUISE, THERE ARE MANY STARS IN THIS FILM, FROM CENTRAL CHARACTERS TO CAMEOS, AND IT KEEPS YOU INTERESTED ALL THE WAY THROUGH, A RIVETING FILM FROM THE FIRSY OPENING SCENES DEPICTING COINCIDENCES AND CHANCE, I'M NOT SURPRISED IT WAS NOMINATED FOR 3 AWARDS, THIS IS AN UNMISSABLE WELL MADE FILM.
